How to make a good tactic?

I want to make my own tactic that is somewhat successful. I've tried reading a few guides but still can't make a formation that works well. I've tried making formations with a few teams such as Arsenal, Leeds and some others but just really struggling. Can anybody give me some good tips or a good guide to read?
