how to start a network game

sup guys, any idea how to start a network game without using Steam? I tried running one and apparantly my friend could not find it under the list when trying to join an online game. Any help?

edit: under FM > Game Status; there is a list of users and beside the word "USERS" it says "(NO NETWORK CONNECTION)" any idea? do i have to use steam to create the server?

oh and when i tried running i was running hamachi as well and my friend joined my network on hamachi. are there any extra steps we have to cover? or is there any other method to solve this?
