How to stop new patch from installing?

I'm hearing that the new 14.3.0 patch will be coming out in a couple of weeks and i'm worried that the new ME changes will destroy my current tactics that I have finally got to work on 14.2.2. How do you stop Steam from installing the new patch? I have changed Steam to 'not automatically update the game' but I have heard from some people that that doesn't work and Steam will still install the new patch? I can't face going back to tactics not working!! LOL!!

If I go offline though doesn't it just come online again the next time I load up the game/Steam?
