Hull Gamble on Rookie Manager McArdle
Newly promoted Hull City shocked many premier league pundits by signing unproven manager Troy McArdle to a 2-year contract of $3,500 a week. The young American stated that he was "Excited for the challenge of the Premiership, and hopes to flourish in his first season." While Hull were tipped for relegation early on, with odds of 500-1, McArdle loftily believes he can guide his side to a mid-table finish. While he also stated that every player would get a chance, McArdle seemed keen to delve into the transfer market, snapping up experienced right back Lauren on a free transfer, and loaning out youth prospects like Liam Cooper and Yann Ekra.

Troy McArdle has already made his intentions to rebuild the Hull City side known, and prepare them for the rigors of the Premiership. He brought in an experienced duo of Danish wingers in the past two days, Dennis Rommedahl and Simon Poulsen. Rommedahl signed from Ajax for an undisclosed fee, and is expected to light up the Premiership with his penchant for scoring goals from the wing. Poulsen, while relatively unproven on this high of a level, is also expected to bring some pace and trickery to the opposite wing. McArdle is hoping their chemistry on a national level will help, and they will slot into the 4-5-1 that he has been employing in the preseason games thus far. McArdle has made his intention to buy and sell more clear, and the consensus is that his Hull City side will either surprise everyone with success, or fail miserably. He recently put out-of-favor winger Stephen Hunt on the transfer list, and has been trying to keep Geovanni, despite serious interest and some intriguing bids from large teams in Italy in Spain. He hopes to eventually inject some youth into the side, but understands experienced veterans will be a necessity if his team wants to have any hope of staying afloat.

McArdle's Spending Spree Continues

Troy McArdle is staying in the eyes of the media with his constant transfer market activity. He recently sold Richard Garcia and Bernard Mendy, claiming that they were not first team material, and would not be in the future. With a sizable chunk of his transfer and wage budget open, McArdle made his first big move, a 4.75 million dollar move for Belgian international center-back, Birger Maertens.

Maertens is expected to make a huge impact, and his ability to play in the defense or midfield, coupled with his tenacity and knack for stepping up into big games will be crucial for Hull as they fight in the Premier League. Speaking exclusively to goal.com, McArdle broke down his plans for slotting Maertens in to the first team. He plans to have Maertens coupled in the center with influential center back Kamil Zayatte, with loanee Ibrahima Sonko on the bench as cover. He went on to say that Lauren and Andy Dawson had impressed in preseason, and were staking their claims for the other two spots in the back.

Hull fans are ecstatic that McArdle was able to bring in veteran defensive midfielder Oliver Dacourt for the low transfer cost of $350k. The 32-year old is expected to start immediately in front of the back four, and provide the link between the defense and midfield for the fledgling Hull side. He brings tremendous experience to the Hull side, and while he isn't getting any younger, he is certainly one of the best players Hull City have seen in a long time. In other news, McArdle let Nick Barmby go on a free transfer. Barmby was happy to go somewhere where he could see first team action, which wasn't expected with stiff competition in the middle of the park.

Preseason breakdown

Hull managed to win every game in the preseason, employing primarily a 4-5-1 and utilizing the counter, and occasionally using a 4-3-3, drawing inspiration from the Dutch. Jan Venegoor of Hesselink played well, and is believed to be in contention for a starting spot up top. McArdle still has transfer funds remaining, and has voiced his intent to bring in new strikers to the squad, but he wants the current players to gel until at least wintertime before he brings in any new blood. Their potential to make some noise in the BPL was evident in their 3-1 preseason victory over Aston Villa, with goals from Hesselink, Rommedahl, and center back Anthony Gardner. Player of the game, and entire preseason was Boaz Myhill, the talented goalkeeper who McArdle has named as his captain for the season. Hull fans are looking towards their first game with guarded optimism.
