Max Allegri’s Napoli 4-2-3-1 — 96 Points & Unbeaten
After taking over Napoli, I wanted to build a tactic inspired by Max Allegri’s football philosophy: structured, pragmatic and defensively solid, but with enough freedom and quality in the final third to hurt opponents.
The result was much better than I expected.

The Tactical Idea
The basic shape is a 4-2-3-1 Wide, but the important thing is how the team behaves depending on the phase of play.
I wanted the team to have a strong defensive structure while still being aggressive when we have the ball.
The philosophy is essentially:
I don't want the team constantly playing reckless, high-risk football. Instead, the midfield provides security behind the attacking four, while the full-backs give the team width and additional support.
In Possession
The team uses a fairly direct passing approach with a very high tempo.
The idea isn't to endlessly circulate the ball. Once an opportunity to progress appears, the team tries to move the ball forward quickly.
A few important principles:
- More direct passing
- Much higher tempo
- Narrow attacking width
- Play through the centre
- Encourage dribbling
- Low crosses
- Shoot more from distance
- Balanced creative freedom
- Short goalkeeper distribution
- Counter-attacking mentality during transitions
The narrow attacking structure is particularly important. Instead of stretching the pitch excessively, the attacking players operate closer together, allowing combinations between the striker, attacking midfielder and wide attackers.
The full-backs then provide much of the necessary width.
This creates a nice contrast: narrow attacking players + wide full-backs.
Transitions
This is where the tactic becomes particularly aggressive.
When we lose the ball:
Counter-press.
The closest players immediately try to win the ball back rather than allowing the opposition to calmly start their attack.
When we win the ball:
Counter.
If there is space, the team attacks quickly rather than slowing the game down.
This combination gives the tactic a very nice rhythm: structured possession when necessary, but explosive transitions when the opportunity is there.
Out of Possession
Defensively, I wanted something slightly different from the usual FM "high line + gegenpress everything" approach.
The pressing line is high, with the team pressing much more often, but the defensive line is considerably deeper.
This gives us an interesting defensive block:
High pressure + deeper defensive line.
The objective is to make the opponent uncomfortable when building from the back while still protecting the space behind the defence.
Other defensive instructions include:
- Much more frequent pressing
- Get stuck in
- Counter-press after losing possession
- Concede crosses
- Balanced pressing trap
- Balanced defensive behaviour
The idea is to force opponents into uncomfortable decisions without constantly exposing the space behind the centre-backs.
Why I Think It Works
The key word for this tactic is balance.
The double pivot gives the team protection, while the attacking midfielder connects midfield with the front line.
The attacking trio behind the striker can interchange and create overloads, while the full-backs provide width and attacking support.
Defensively, the deeper back line prevents the tactic from becoming too vulnerable to balls in behind.
So even though the team plays with a very high tempo and aggressive pressing, there is still a defensive safety net.
That's probably the biggest reason why the tactic was able to maintain consistency over 38 league games without losing.
