When I started with Ipswich I used a narrow diamond 4-1-2-1-2 with a short passing style and it workd pretty well, enough to get promoted anyway.
I used JET as a poacher, Chopra/Scotland alternating at deep-lying forward, Bullard at AMC, Bowyer and Leadbitter as CMs. I bought Diego Arismendi to play DM and got Stuart Parnaby on a free for my RB.
If you want to play a wider formation I'd suggest buying some wingers because the ones you start with aren't that great.
