im playing my 4th pre season with a new club and i decided Man Utd would be my choice this time but every team i play no matter what set up i use or they use or any opposition instructions defenders are pulling away and scoring worldies where as i am being closed down so hard its untrue and cant do a thing

currently being beaten 3-1 by my u21s

anyone got anything constructive to add, any tips advice?

p.s. i always promise myself i wont buy the new edition until the second patch because of how generally broken the game is at launch in past years so ITT i want to just relax in this thread and talk about it sensibly

A little talked about part of football is momentum. I've found that if you concede and it's not a breath-taking wonder strike, the opposition is exploiting something. You need to adjust that weakness or they are going to continue to exploit it.

I'd need to see screen shots form the match to know what's going wrong and why your defenders are being beaten.

As for being closed down, What kind of a game are you playing? If I'm being pressed out of a game, I go ultra defensively and try to punt the ball over them for about 20 minutes. Either they drop their defensive line and I try to regain control of the game or they continue to press high and I sneak a few one-on-one chances. But sometimes you just have to accept that the opposition set themselves up perfectly to shut your system down.

More info would be helpful and just telling us they're peeling away tells us absolutely nothing about the problem.

Well I'm finding it's a lot of diagonal balls through the centre halves and also straight direct ones cutting me up

I'm a veteran at this game of 10 years and it feels like year upon year they add new detail without much explanation of what it does, I find it very frustrating.

I can't trust having 2 cms as a midfield because the teams lack defensive cohesion so I tend yo play a dmc which leaves a huge space in the amc and can't maintain possessiom without my strikers or wingers getting clattered off the ball, creating the counter opportunity for the opposition

This wasn't a problem for me but I did try last edition to make a tactic to solve this issue, well not really an issue but a style of play I wanted to construct, it sacrificed how many goals my striker scored but my inside forwards scored bucket loads. It also enabled me to have a number 10 play how I wanted albeit ina number 9 role.

Essentially you set up with a 4-3-3/4-1-2-2-1 or whatever you wanted to call it, still have a DMC and then in the 2 have a roaming playmaker and a box to box midfielder. You let the RPM do his thing and then I put the B2B on attack so he plays more like an AMC, in a striker I play a number 10 as a deep lying forward support duty, then wingers as inside forwards but you need goalscorers. I had Ferreirra-Carrasco (spelling) for atleti score 49 goals, my striker or number 10 only scored 9 but bagged over 30 assists. I am not saying you have to set up like me but I am just showing you with the use of specialists and thinking outside the box it is possible to solve problems.

Sorry cannot help with marking lol

Marking just doesn't work. Fullbacks never track runners, neither do midfielders hence the hugely disportionate goals from crossed where someone arrived to a pin point cross and smashes it home unmarked. Add to that goalkeepers who hardly save anything it's clear the ME is completely broken.

Nope, no problems with fullbacks here. Concentration, positioning, anticipation and marking will determine how well runners are marked. You can't blame the best ME there's ever been. If you concede disproportionate amounts of goals from crosses, review your tactics.

I give up, so many over the top balls to strikers ive set to mark tighter and just banging them in even with a deep defensive line and when i try the same every player gets closed down so intensly

will be back on when its patches in the new year and finally fixed a buggy game...

That's because you're focusing on the wrong thing. The midfield is most likely where your issue is.

its like the midfield isnt there when a wide player just bangs the ball over the top of my defense and midfield to their striker and tears in at goal

very frustrating for me at launch again :(

SS your team and player instructions.

Meh. Give someone enough time/space to hit these balls and they will.

Well, apparently the marking/defending thing is a bug, that they're working on fixing.

But personally, I think the changes to counter-attacking is what is causing people no end of grief. If I lose the ball, usually when doing a **** slow build up, the opposition will throw forward everyone and the kitchen sink. They'll through ball split my centrebacks who are in la la land, or they'll get it to the back post to someone unmarked cos god knows where the full backs have buggered off to.

Meanwhile, I win the ball, we either hoof it, or counter so badly it's a shambles. Alternatively, we build up so slowly, that the midfield takes years to get up in support of the strikers, that by the time they get there, the counter attack chance is gone, and there goes another silly pass/boom countered. (I might be exaggerating a bit, but it is happening far too frequently for me.)

Your D-line is set high or very high? If so, pumping balls to the back of your CBs is the most logic thing to do.

Your FBs are set to attack? If so, pumping balls to their back and ask the wingers to cross in the line is the most logic thing to do.

Your CBs, to play high d-line, need acceleration and anticipation. Positioning is also a must, forget marking or tackling.
Change the role to cover so they will get to the ball, not to the man
Lower your d-line when winning
Change the roles of the FBs to support or defend when winning or facing Hazard alike players
Your FBs need to have a lot of pace to track back wingers

Your mids are crucial to track back other mids and to help cover just outside the box. if you play with at least 2, one should be defending and the other support. Putting them all to attack or attack roles will open a crater in the mid.
Make them tight marking the opponent mids

About the mentality of the team. Counter is very hard and depends of very good 1st touch, passing, anticipation and fast tempo. Do achieve this you need time and structured team. Very fluid is good if you have players like Messi and Neymar that know and can solve things alone.

If you are building slowly is because the team is not gelled, player can't do what you ask/want or many changes have been done in the team (buying/selling), too many new players in the 1st 11, etc. If you pick up Ronaldo, Messi and Ibra and ask them to play in Juventus in January them will under perform.

IMO, 16 is more about managing what you have and slowly get want you want.
