I notice that a lot of the times, when there is space in front, my midfielders pass backwards and my defenders pass to the keeper. Is there a way to limit this? I tried setting passing to direct, but it wont's work.

Increase Tempo?

Touchline Shout: Get Ball Forward?

Using a higher tempo is the only thing i could think of because then the players will try to get it to the strikers quicker

passing backwards isnt necessarily a bad thing. if the other team is playing a closing down style, it might open up a few spaces.

waste time rarely might

It's already on the lowest possible setting.

But the thing is, the players in front seem to be open. The centrebacks and mifielders seem to freeze in place and wiggle a bit, then pass backwards.

Play a more direct style. That should make your players look for longer passes to the attack.
