Very rigid - only player roles matter
Rigid - player roles and duties matter
Balanced - less roles matter, but duties do
Fluid - no roles matter, only duties
Very fluid - no roles or duties matter

This may be a somewhat bold statement, but I think it's correct.

I have to disagree with you. Player roles will always matter no matter what Fluidity you choose.
As you progress from V.Rigid-V.Fluid, the player is free to take on additional responsibilities.

eg.
On V.Ridged, a CB will only defend and will always set himself into a defensive position. Where as in V.Fluid, he will defend and set up defensive positions but also (if he is available to do so) move into spaces to create passing options while supporting the Center Midfield.

Fluidity is about responsibility.

Very Ridged
= do what I tell you and nothing else
Ridged = do what I tell but help out if you absolutely have to
Balanced = you have your roles and make sure everyone is playing responsibly
Fluid = You've the freedom to deviate from your roll but do so responsibly
Very Fluid = Your roles are there as a guideline to follow but i expect you to go out with the freedom to play as you see fit.

that's how I see it but this is a good thread since debate is the best way for people theory craft and learn about how Fluidity affect the team's game.

I think in RL, you would be correct, but in FM, this has to translate into some numbers. Or options.

This, really. The more fluid, the more creative freedom the players have. They'll be more inclined to do something outside of their instructions.

It's Universalists vs Specialists, isn't it? Use playmakers and/or complete forwards to shine in the more rigid systems and more/all generic roles in the more fluid systems.

It dose translate into numbers but since the FM Match Engine is littearly a giant probablitlity engine, it will appear ramdom and unstructured.

How would you describe van gaals philosophy?

I would say control and fluid?
