Hi all, I'm not looking for any credit here as most of the hard work was done by @Knap.
I began a save as Gillingham, using Knap's 442 tactics, and in my first season was predicted to finish 18th and ended up 2nd - great job!
First season in the Championship, predicted to finish bottom. Was still using Knap's 442 tactics, however, whether it was the jump in quality or me not having the right profile of players, we were stuggling - sat firmly in the relegation zone looking up come the end of October with 3 wins in 18...
I'd seen enough at this point to know that changes were needed, but also knew that the tactic was fundamentally still sound, I just needed to compensate for the players I had available.
So, a switch from 442 to 352 followed, along with some minor tweaks to the Tactical Style and, obviously the player roles and individual instructions - nothing drastic though.
What followed was a run of 28 games played, 13 wins, 13 draws, and only 2 defeats, which included a club record 14 games unbeaten and a respectable 13th place finish;
The following season, once again predicted to be relegated; the smallest wage bill in the division, yadda yadda yadda.....
Well, that's not quite what happened - we raised a few eyebrows and surprised a few people;
Had the heartache of losing the play-off final on pens, whilst also making the 1/4 finals of the FA Cup;
All things considered, a serious case of over-achieving!
Nothing fancy in terms of training or player filters or any of that - I just looked for players suited to the roles with no gaping weaknesses.
