Hi guys
this is my emulation of Laurent Blanc's PSG tactic. I tested this tactic with the database of season 2013-14 with same players of that PSG.
Emulating Laurent Blanc's PSG (2013-14) on Football Manager 2024: A Tactical Guide
Laurent Blanc's Paris Saint-Germain during the 2013-14 season was a fascinating example of tactical dominance, combining solid ball possession with lethal offensive efficiency. If you're looking to replicate that winning approach on Football Manager 2024, this guide will provide you with the foundations to build your Blanc-inspired tactic.
Tactical Philosophy: Control, Patience, and Lethality
Blanc's PSG was a team that loved to control the game, maintaining ball possession with great patience. Building from the back was a key element, with the team calmly working to circulate the ball and find the right spaces. Despite the emphasis on possession, it wasn't sterile tiki-taka: the goal was always to bring the ball into the opponent's penalty area, seeking the most effective finishing opportunity.
When out of possession, the team did not adopt an aggressive and immediate gegenpressing. Instead, they preferred to win the ball back and then launch a counter-attack, leveraging the speed and technical skill of their attacking players. The defensive line was high, keeping the team compact and pressing opponents with a certain intensity to recover the ball in the opponent's half.
Team Instructions (Overview)
Here's how you might set up your general team instructions, based on Blanc's philosophy.
Team Mentality: Positive
To reflect PSG's proactive and dominant approach, the team mentality should be set to "Positive". This will encourage your players to seek possession, take calculated risks in attack, and maintain an overall offensive attitude.
1. In Possession
2. In Transition
Formation and Key Roles (4-3-3)
The reference formation will be the 4-3-3, with specific roles to best emulate the characteristics of the 2013-14 PSG players.
Stunning Results: The Triumph of Tactics
Emulating Laurent Blanc's PSG tactic is not just a stylistic exercise; it can lead to concrete and dominant results, just like in the 2013-14 season. In our Football Manager 2024 test, this tactic demonstrated overwhelming superiority on all fronts, faithfully replicating the success of that historic team.

Team Mentality: Positive
To reflect PSG's proactive and dominant approach, the team mentality should be set to "Positive". This will encourage your players to seek possession, take calculated risks in attack, and maintain an overall offensive attitude.
1. In Possession
- Width: fairly wide. It will be important to balance width to exploit the flanks with full-backs and wingers, without overly stretching the team.
- Build-Up: play out from defense. The emphasis will be on building from the back and patient play.
- Tempo: slightly lower. A tempo that allows for control without being too slow.
- Passing: shorter. Prioritize short, safe passes to maintain possession, with some through balls to feed the attackers.
- Final Third: (Crosses and Finishing): mixed crosses, work the ball into the box. Once in the final third, the objective will be to create opportunities to get the ball into the box, either through precise crosses or central plays for finishers. Patience in the final third will be crucial to find the right moment for a killer pass or cross.
2. In Transition
- When Possession Is Lost: Not an immediate gegenpress, neither an organized retreat followed by a structured recovery. Allow your players to decide according to the situation.
- When Possession Is Won: counter. As soon as the ball is recovered, the team should be ready to launch an attack.
- Pressing Line: High. The team must press opponents in their half to limit their build-up.
- Defensive Line: High. Maintain a high defensive line to support the press and keep the team compact.
- Pressing: More Often / Step up more. Ask players to press with greater intensity and maintain an advanced position to condense the pitch.
The reference formation will be the 4-3-3, with specific roles to best emulate the characteristics of the 2013-14 PSG players.
- Goalkeeper: Salvatore Sirigu (Goalkeeper-defend): no instructions.
- Right Back: Gregory van der Wiel (Wing-Back-support): no instructions.
- Left Back: Maxwell (Wing-Back-support): no instructions.
- Right Centre-Back: Thiago Silva (Ball-Playing Defender-defend): pass it shorter, close down less.
- Left Centre-Back: Alex (Central Defender-defend): close down less.
- Defensive Midfielder: Thiago Motta (Deep-Lying Playmaker-defend): pass it shorter, close down less.
- Right Central Midfielder: Blaise Matuidi (Box-to-Box Midfielder-support): no instructions.
- Left Central Midfielder: Marco Verratti (Advanced Playmaker-support): pass it shorter, close down more.
- Right Winger: Edinson Cavani (Inside Forward-attack): pass it shorter, sit narrower, close down more, mark tighter.
- Left Winger: Ezequiel Lavezzi (Inside Forward-attack): pass it shorter, close down more, mark tighter.
- Striker: Zlatan Ibrahimović (Deep-Lying Forward-attack): no instructions.
