Hi guys,

As part of my University Course I have to write an answer on Football Manager and specifically in relation to some "Learning Principles" suggested by James Gee. I was wondering if anyone has any advice based on the following 6 characteristics?

1. Psychological moratorium principle - to what extent do you take risks in the game that you would not countenance in real-life (if given the change)?

2. Committed learning principle - what amount of practise and effort have you given to the game so far? To what extent are you committed to the virtual world in FM?

3. Identity principle - You have choices in FM to develop a "personality" and relationships with your players, staff and the media. To what extent does this project or diverge from your own personality?

4. Self-knowledge principle - What have you learnt about yourself in FM?

5. Amplification of Input Principle - For a little input, you get a lot of output. Examples from FM?

6. Achievement principle - What have you mastered? What are you yet to master? What do you consider your main achievement so far in the game?

i'm not really a super harcore gamer but here's my 2 cents.

1. Yes i take a lot more risks on FM. i would never fine Fernando Torres in real life. If he got sent off, i'd probably give him a hug. Although the world of a Premier League manager is quite different to the world in which i live and so it's all fairly abstract.

2. My devotion comes and goes depending on my life in the real world. If i'm bored or at a loose end i'll play.

3. I think it's similar to my real life persona. I'd love to be arrogant like Mourinho but my FM characters always appear humble and modest... maybe after more success i'd become a bit more full of myself. perhaps that will be linked to my real life development... i'm only early in my career (real-world).

4. Impatient... lack of eye for details... very rarely will i watch the game on full mode for analysis or scour the third wold for young talents.

5. hmmm. tough one. personally i don't think i get much personal output from it... it's addictive in this 'je ne sais quoi' way. i can spend hours on it and afterwards realise i've wasted the whole day. then i turn on MOTD and Liverpool still suck.

6. mastered everything bar tactics i think. that's probably due to my lack of patience... biggest achievement is getting through 3 full seasons without becoming bored of the save game.

anyway - hope this helps a little. it's just my view. good luck with this...

it would be good to hear from some hardcore FM'ers!
