In 2001, Leeds United reached the Semi-Finals of the UEFA Champions League. So where are they now? Possibly Champions League contenders? Premier League contenders? No, they're fighting it out down in Coca-Cola League 1. Since 2001, Leeds United hit debt, and were relegated down two divisons in three years. They have sold world class players and signed free transfers. Now, debts are stable at the club. And they want people to know that THEY’RE BACK.

Update: July 2009
July was a busy month for Terry Dunne. The first month in charge of a new club needs a lot of effort and time. Here is a basic overview of what happened over the first month:
- 21 Players Needed New Contracts. 18 Players Agreed New Terms.
- 5 New Players Were Brought In.
- 7 Games Were Played.
- 1 Player Was Sold.

This fixture was just to test out the basics of the team. I picked what I thought would be the strongest formation and selection possible. The team I picked is shown below.

BradfordvLeeds.png

This friendly was the biggest test yet. I decided to stick to the same formation but changed the team slightly. Beckford would be the main striker today with Becchio in support. The squad worked well and Beckford managed to get two goals. Great result in all.

LeedsvGHAcademy.png

This friendly was again just another chance for me to try out different tactics. I put Doyle in the heart of midfield in an attempt that he would control the team and be the play maker. Today was also the chance for me to try out the new loan-signing Dalla Valle. Dalla Valle managed to get on to the scoresheet and had a good game. The whole team played well and Doyle controlled the midfield accordingly.

CrusadersvLeeds.png

Yet another friendly was upon us. This time I tried a different approach in a 4-5-1 formation with Dalla Valle being a lone striker. At half time I changed back to a 4-4-2 formation as the team wasn't working out. I brought on Elliot who went on to score two goals within minutes of coming on. The game ended 3-0 with a comfortable win in the end.

Today was a real test. This friendly allowed us the chance to play the all mighty CHELSEA.... reserves. None the less, the reserves are still a hard team to play against. An example of one of their hot prospects could be Sturridge, the opening goalscorer. Going down after 25 minutes wasn't really a good feeling, but the lads responded instantly with a Dalla Valle goal 2 minutes later. At half time I went more defensively and, believe it or not, we ended up winning the match 3-1.

LeedsvChelseaReserves.png

This match wasn't as big as the last. Although only a friendly, I still wanted to win yet another match. I went with the original 4-4-2 formation and we won the match 4-0. Goals from Becchio, Howson, and Elliot helped seal the win.

FarsleyvLeeds.png

The final friendly of the month was upon us. To cap off the end of a great month I wanted a win, and my god I got one. Yet another 4-0 thrashing. Da Laet scored a penalty 7 minutes in, Dalla Valle and Elliots two goals which sealed the match. A great end to a great month.

TRANSFERS
To help get the team going I needed some transfers. Throughout July I searched and searched and ended up signing 5 players. One player was a hard signing, costing me a total of £500k. This signing was a solid centre back known as Gary Barrowdale. Barrowdale originally played at Championship Level with Q.P.R, so he knows what its like to perform at high levels. Since budgets were limited at Leeds United, I decided to try and not spend much more on players. For this reason alone I decided to go for loaning players. I was successful at doing so, and signed an additional four players to the squad. I got Dalla Valle who has to return to his club in 6 months. Unfortunately, Dalla Valle got injured in one of the friendlies and so will be out for a month. This means that Dalla Valle will only be available after 5 or 6 games in. Michael Doyle from Conventry was signed for 12 months. Liam Cooper, Nathan Barker, and Da Laet were all signed until the end of the season.

MONTH OVERVIEW
Overally, I believe that my first month in Charge couldn't have gotten any better. Leed United had played 7 matches, and won 7. A 100% record meant that confidence levels where now sky high at Leeds United, and that I had taken Leeds United one step closer to being "re-born". Hopefully August will be nearly as successful as this month!

Controversy has arose as Leeds United chairman Ken Bates accepts an offer for Rui Marques without consulting manager Terry Dunne. Rotterham had a £55k offer accepted by the chairman, and not the manager. Terry Dunne has expressed his unhappiness at this and it seems as if the supporters agree. One supporter stated "This is ridiculous. He's a manager, y'know, he should be involved an' tha', innit?". Stay tuned to skysports.com for more information on this upcoming story.

Update: August 2009
August was the first month of the Coca-Cola League. August also saw the start of the league cup. In total, there were a total of 8 games for Leeds United to play in August.

Bournemouth 1 - 2 Leeds United (Friendly)
BournemouthvLeeds.png

This match was the final friendly of the season. Although only a friendly, I still wanted to keep the winning streak going and that's what I did. Becchio & Grella started the game upfront, but neither got on the scoresheet. Defender Kisnorbo opened the scoreline for Leeds United. We finally sealed the match off in the second half with a penalty kick by Snodgrass.

Leeds United 2 - 0 Port Vale (League Cup)
LeedsvPortVale.png

This was the first competitive game of the season. It was the first round of the league cup. The league cup would be one of the trophies that I thought I could win, and it looked as if I was correct when Becchio scored an opening goal with help from teammate Beckford. The match ended 2-0 in the end with a goal from Borrowdale to ease the cup tie in Leeds United's favour.

Wycombe Wanderers 0 - 1 Leeds United (League)
WycombevLeeds.png

The first league match of the season was upon us. I wanted a perfect start to the season with a good win at Wycombe. I started with the usual strikeforce of Becchio and Beckford, but neither scored. It was winger Snodgrass who won us the match in the end, with a great goal from just outside the box, 10 minutes from time.

Walsall 2 - 2 Leeds United 2 (League)
WalsallvLeeds.png

The second league match of the season, and I wanted to keep the winning streak going. The good news before the game was that Dalla Valle had made a return to the squad after being out for over a month. He was put on the bench today, with the strikeforce of Becchio and Beckford remaining upfront. The match was looking comfortable for us as we were two nil up with two goals from Beckford. However, we conceded two late goals which allowed Walsall to ****** a point. This was our first match of the season where we haven't won. Still unbeaten, none the less.

Leeds United 2 - 0 Tranmere (League)
LeedsvTranmere.png

Nothing much happened in this match. Becchio and Beckford started upfront as usual, with Dalla Valle still lacking match fitness. Goals from striker Becchio and Winger Snodgrass helped maintain our unbeaten run.

Stoke 3 - 1 Leeds United (League Cup)
StokevLeeds.png

The odds weren't on our side today, and the result proved the inevitable. Although Leeds had gone on a 12 match unbeaten run it wasn't enough to get past Premier League side Stoke. I started with the normal 4-4-2 formation and perhaps should've went more defensive. It was the usual team with Beckford and Becchio upfront, Snodgrass on the win, Doyle controlling the central, etc etc. The tie was looking good as we went 1-0 up just 5 minutes in with a goal from Beckford. However, a double from Ricardo Fuller put Stoke ahead in the second half and Lawrence finished the match off with the third twenty minutes from time. This was Leeds United's first defeat under Terry Dunne.

Colchester United 2 - 2 Leeds United (League)
ColchestervLeeds.png

Start striker Becchio had slight problems before the match, and that's the reason that I made Grella take his place. The match ended 2-2 with goals from both wingers Snodgrass and Robinson. A fair result in all. The downside to this match was that Kilkenny picked up his 5th yellow card, meaning he would recieve a one match ban and miss Leeds United's next match vs Exeter.

Leeds United 3 - 1 Exeter (League)
LeedsvExeter.png

The team was without Kilkenny today due to a yellow card ban, and Beckford was left out on the bench due to fitness levels being low. This didn't effect our performance however, and gave us our first win since beating Tranmere Rovers. We were two nil up with 10 minutes to go when Exeter sneaked a goal in. However, 3 minutes from time Showunmi put the game away when he scored a goal from the edge of the box to get his second goal of the game. Becchio was the other scorer of the match.

League Table at the end of August 2009
Coca-ColaLeague1.png

August was a good month for us. In total we won 5 games, drawn 2 and lost 1. Unfortunately this month saw us exiting the League Cup in the second round. Dalla Valle returned from injury this month as Kilkenny recieved a one match suspension for picking up five yellow cards. We're in third place in the league, being only two points behind first and second spots. However, it is only early in the season and anything could still happen.
