Update: September 2009
September was the start of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. The draw for the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy also took place this month. In total, there were a total of 6 games for Leeds United to play in September.
Notts County 0 - 3 Leeds United (Johnstone's Paint Trophy)
This match was the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. We were drawn away to Notts County and a comfortable win was expected. Becchio and Beckford started as the main strikers and it was a good job to because Backford scored a goal inside the opening minute of the match. Just 5 minutes later, right winger Johnson scored. So 7 minutes in and it was Leeds United 2, Notts County 0. The match was sealed off just before half time as Johnson scored his second of the match to make it 3-0. A goal-less second half meant that the score stayed at 3-0.
Leeds United 1 - 0 Stockport (League)
This match was another league match. A win tonight would've put us top of the table. I started with a strong team, having Doyle controlling the midfeild, star man Snodgrass on the right and the usual partnership of Bckford and Becchio upfront. Honours were even during the match until the 39th minute were Becchio put us ahead. The match ended 1-0 and it was a good solid performance from the boys.
Leeds United 2 - 0 Gillingham (League)
The only change to the squad that played stockport was that Da Laet was put in at centre back. This was the day that he could prove that he is worthy of his shirt in the starting eleven. At half-time it was still 0-0, which meant that Da Laet was doing his job well by not conceding. Ten minutes in second half Becchio struck for us and put us on track. Ten minutes after his goal, Beckford sealed the match comfortabley to make it 2-0 and another three points in the bag for us.
Southend 1 - 2 Leeds United (League)
Todays match was away to Southend. The line up was the usual, only with Kilkenny in the centre of the pitch. This match was Kilkenny's first match since getting suspended back in August. We went ahead after only 5 minutes thanks to Becchio. On the hour mark Southend equalised and managed to hold on until 15 minutes from time when Beckford snatched a late winner for us.
MK Dons 3 - 0 Leeds United (League)
This match was meant to be a tight one with us having the upperhand, but that was not to be. We conceded two early goals and finished the first half 2-0 down. I gave the lads some encouragement and said something along the lines of "lets do a f***** comeback!". We started the half brilliantly and had a few efforts on goal. But in the 70th minute MK Dons got a counter and scored from it. That finished the match for us.With 5 minutes to go we were just seeing out the game when an MK Dons player did a horrific tackle on Luciano Becchio. Becchio was carried off the pitch and I was furious that the player didn't even get a yellow card. Doyle also picked up his 5th yellow of the season which meant he would have a one match ban. We later found out the Becchio would be sidelined for 6-7 months. He had broken his leg.. This was hopefully a one off match and it won't happen again.
Leeds United 0 - 0 Carlise (League)
Not much happened in this match. No goals, and no team looked like even coming close to scoring. Grella replaced the injured Becchio today. Becchio was seen in the crowd and got a standing ovation when he walked onto the pitch at half time.
League Table at the end of September
September was an average month. In total we won 4 games, drawn 1 and lost 1. This month saw us lose are first match in the league this season against MK Dons, and what a heavy defeat it was. Kilkenny returned from suspension and Dalla Valle regained full fitness. Doyle recieved a one match suspension for picking up five yellow cards. The biggest story of the month would have to be our star striker Luciano Becchio has broken his leg and will be out for around 6 or 7 months. This has split the great strikeforce known as "the becks". We're in second place in the league, only one point behind first place Brentford. The second round draw of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy also saw us being placed against Bradford City. The transfer deadline had passes this month too, with a late offer being accepted for Johnson from Conventry. The 150k offer was accepted for Johnson but he snubbed the contract offer and remained at Leeds. I came third place in the manager of the month award which is a bit of an achievement for me, personally.
