Great read this is, loving the depth of the match analysis aswell....Great start to the season, think making 11 changes to the squad against reading possibly cost you the 4-0 against Chelsea as some players may have lost momentum....Ward Prowse is a superb signing though, goes on to become a world beater on the game after a few seasons....Keep up the great work, looking forward to reading more.

Thanks, still trying to find out which players can be trusted in games. So hopefully the same thing won't happen when the F.A. Cup comes around.

If there's anything else anyone thinks needs including in the updates, let me know.

END OF THE ROAD FOR SHERWOOD
Tim Sherwood has paid the price for Tottenham's slow start to the season and now finds himself on the managerial scrapheap after just 10 games. The bookie's favourite for the sack was deemed surplus to requirements after a run of defeats continued against rivals Arsenal left Tottenham in 12th.
With just three wins to their name Spurs will be looking for the next manager to be more experienced to push them up the table. Claudio Ranieri, Glenn Hoddle and Guus Hiddink are rumoured to be interesting the board.

"Destroyed by Palace, if they had won by 4 or 5 I still would have wondered how we hadn't lost by more."

Liverpool had a chance to go top with a win over Crystal Palace, and the added pressure seemed to have a negative effect on their performance. Rumoured Liverpool target Tom Ince had total control of the game from the start creating the chance for Marouane Chamakh to score his first goal in 964 minutes of football (when you see something like that under Milestones, you know they are going to score). Tom Ince was unlucky not to score himself soon after.
Near total domination by Palace continued into the second half with Liverpool managing to equalise against the run of play with an Iago Aspas shot from the left side of the box.
Tony Pulis' men will wonder how they did not win this, Frederik Josef's will be wondering how they managed a point.

"Happy the changes to the line-up paid off, we're having a difficult time killing off teams. Most of our shots are simply straight the 'keeper, which is disappointing."

Liverpool manager, Frederik Josef, made a surprise change to the Liverpool line-up for the big match-up against Stoke, with Mohammed Sakho making his first league start for the club in place of Daniel Agger, and Kolo Toure starting the game in the centre of midfield.
Liverpool started much brighter than they did in their last game, and after 20 minutes had created more chances than they had in 90 against Crystal Palace.
Iago Aspas wasn't the only one confused as to how the first half ended goalless, the Spaniard had a large helping hand by somehow managing to miss from less than 1 yard out. Raheem Sterling, who has been quiet in recent weeks was unlucky with a long run down the right of midfield ending with the Englishman hitting the post.
Liverpool got their reward for their attacking play in fortuitous fashion, when a cross from MOTM Jose Enrique crept under the bar to everyone's, including Jose Enrique's, amazement.

"Nice game, we play better without Luis Suarez who stayed on the bench today. A few goal-line clearances stopped WBA getting a couple of goals back, so still plenty of work to do.

Jordan Henderson was handed the armband today with Steven Gerrard dropping to the bench.
Iago Aspas, who has found himself gettting a run in the team recently, found space at the far post to get his head onto the end of a deep cross by Glen Johnson. Daniel Sturridge had Liam Ridgewell to thank as the defender allowed the ball to bobble through to striker, who won't have an easier goal for the rest of the season.
Sturridge had a hand in the next two goals, after great work from Joe Allen down the right Sturridge managed to pull a perfect ball back for Raheem Sterling to slide home. James Ward-Prowse, on as a second half substitute, was put through by Sturridge for another nice finish. West Brom did push for a consolation goal in injury time as one time Liverpool striker Nicolas Anelka hit the post.

"Happy with the draw, we rode our luck at times and nearly scored ourselves a few times. Great second half, Luis Suarez seems to not rate me as a manager and is not putting much effort in on the pitch."

Steven Gerrard nearly caught out Wojciech Szczesny with a clever free-kick inside ten minutes. This is game that was based around the midfield however with Mikel Arteta creating the best chance for the home team in the first half, spinning off Sakho for a chance that went well wide. A game against two of the top four was not one for the purists in an overall dull first half.
They say it's a game of two halves, and this was the perfect game to prove it. Straight from the kick-off Santi Cazorla found space behind the Liverpool defense to square to Olivier Giroud who forced a good save from Simon Mignolet. Luis Suarez was brought on for the second half and jumped on an error from the Arsenal 'keeper to put in a low cross towards Iago Aspas, who managed to hit the post from close range. Jack Wilshere pounced on an open ball to dribble around the lunging challenges of Anthony Annan and Glen Johnson to waste a glorious one-on-one chance. Both teams deserved to share the spoils and both manages will be pleased with the improvement as the game went on.

MONTHLY ROUND-UP

We're keeping this unbeaten run going, I hope Everton don't end it in the next game. Playing well, and I'm happy, as we're getting closer to January I'm looking out for an experienced attacking midfielder to bring in for a low cost. Outgoings will be interesting, Daniel Agger is getting interest from abroad, I'm sure the Spanish clubs will be looking at Luis Suarez again, and Jordan Henderson is also wanted (although I do not see me letting Henderson go).

INJURY NEWS - G. JOHNSON AND HENDERSON BOTH INJURED
Glen Johnson has been ruled out for up to two months with a broken toe. The England fullback has been in excellent for for Liverpool lately, Jon Flanagan and the now fully fit Martin Kelly will be competing to take over the coveted right back spot.
Jordan Henderson has also been ruled out for a week, and therefore the first Merseyside derby of his new managers reign, after damaging his heel in a training session. Welsh midfielder Joe Allen is seen as the most likely to replace Henderson, although Ward-Prowse and Coutinho are other options.

Second placed Liverpool, take on 4th placed Everton in the game of the weekend.
Both clubs have been in excellent form in the league, and with both managers making their first appearance in the derby atmosphere it could be a psychological advantage to the victor for years to come.

"Not a shot on target till the 75th minute, completely overrun for the entire match. Two more players injured during the game. Pathetic. I hate getting kicked off the park."

Frederik Josef will want to forget about this match, the Liverpool fans however will not be allowed to. Liverpool were toothless and on this evidence won't be in Europe again next season. Lukaku had Everton ahead instead 4 minutes, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside; that was the only thinking that Liverpool did correctly in the entire 90 minutes. Fernandez scored from an acute angle against Mignolet to win it for Everton before Liverpool had even got started, the away side had a goal ruled out for offside before Luis Suarez was hauled off by the manager for another abject display.

Jose Enrique suffered a broken arm in the loss after landing heavily from a poor challenge, both injuries will give Frederik Josef a cause for thought due to the small size squad Liverpool have. The Reds boss already publicly questioned referee C. Pawson after the game saying
"How can two players be taken off the pitch with serious injuries and the side end up with not even one yellow card for the entire game!"

"Three shots on target for each team, but we scored more. Darren Bent was fantastic, always seemed to find space and cause us problems."

Liverpool were forced to start Anthony Annan and James Ward-Prowse in the centre of midfield, with ever other senior central midfielder injured for todays match-up.
It started off badly for Liverpool as Darren Bent ghosted behind their defnse to net a simply finish in the opening minutes. Liverpool's stand-in skipper, Luis Suarez responded and drilled home a fantastic strike from all of 30 yards. With Raheem Sterling adding another before half-time, after a slide rule pass from Aspas.
The best was still to come for Liverpool, as Daniel Sturridge picked the ball up on the edge of the box and left his marker for dead with some nice tricky before scoring the third for the home side.
16 year old Pedro Chirivella made his league debut for liverpool, coming on as a second half substitute for Sterling.

"Happy with the way we won, Man City were the better team and Gerrard had an awful game. This could have been the Chelsea game all over again."

Liverpool made one change to the side that beat Fulham; Steven Gerrard replaced James Ward-Prowse in the centre of midfield.
It started off well for City, and Negredo really should have put the home side ahead when Migolet rushed out for the ball and missed it completely, the striker however put his shot wide.
Citizens where on their feet some after when David Silva tapped in the near post from a corner.
Liverpool quickly changed their tactics and brought Aspas deeper and played both Sterling and Suarez through the middle. The tactic seemed to work as Negredo, David Silva and Sergio Aguero found themselves in much less space.
In the 70th minute Martin Kelly, on for the tiring John Flanagan, found Sterling in space on the right the winger cut inside and unleashed an unstoppable shot past Costel Pantilimon to equal up the scores. It didn;t last long however as Sturridge picked up a knock and instead of kicking the ball out of play Negredo ran up the other end and shot, Mignolet could do nothing but parry the ball to Stevan Jovetic, who was left with a simple finish.
The injury seemed to knock Liverpool's previous momentum as they were essentially left playing with ten men. Frederik Josef would have had plenty of explaining to do with his decision to keep the hobbling Daniel Sturridge on the pitch, if it wasn't for the strikers positioning when he managed to knock home a drilled cross from Aly Cissokho.

"Maybe I was a little early to judge Suarez, this is the first game he has made any difference in, let's see how he does next week"

Luis Suarez got the nod to start in place of the injured Daniel Sturridge, and the Uruguayan paid back the faith shown in him by the manager by striking a free-kick into the top corner to give Liverpool the lead.
Swansea began to fight back, and Liverpool were forced to keep their fullbacks from going to far forward, with Wilfred Bony in particular causing them problems in the first half.
Three minutes into the second half a long kick out from Mignolet, was flicked on by Athony Annan, Luis Suarez then picked up the ball and deftly chipped the ball over the on-rushing Michel Vorm.
Luis Suarez looked determined to prove his doubts wrong, and after picking up the ball just inside the opposing half the striker dribbled past the entire Swansea defense, before knocking in his hat-trick.
The striker was replaced on the hour mark by Iago Aspas, who harshly had a goal disallowed just 5 minutes later.
Wilfred Bony, the striker who caused so many problems in the first half, finally got the goal his performanced deserved, after a fantastic pass found him alone in the area the Frenchman sidestepped Mignolet and blasted home to excite the fans once more.

"Disappointing not to get a win, especially with the congested fixtures this month."

The boxing day game brings back memories of the epic 4-3 games in the 80's, Liverpool fans however will be thinking more about the injury room as Liverpool welcome Hull in two days time, and then Cardiff on New Year's Eve. The squad, already down to bare bones, cannot handle any more injuries.
After 45 minutes, Liverpool had the most to be aggreaved about, two goals diallowed, both for offsides; one from Luis Suarez and another from Iago Aspas had the home side open mouthed, with the referee confronted by the players at half-time.
The game continued as it started, in similar vein to the Norwich game earlier in the season. Liverpool pressed and forced Newcastle back, but a Suarez freekick aside. No really chances came Liverpool's way.

Liverpool 2 Hull City 3

"Angered, after going 2-0 up with ease, the players decided that was enough and constantly gave the ball away, and stopped tracking back. This was against a team with one the worst defensive records in the division and in teh relegation zone."

Liverpool gave starts to Martin Kelly, Daniel Agger, James Ward-Prowse and Luis Alberto as the squad was rotated due to fixture congestion.
Liverpool went on the attack early, possibly so they could rest players for the upcoming trip to Wales if a big lead was secured. After some nice work from Ward-Prowse, and a nice pass from Luis Alberto, Luis Suarez was left with an easy finish to begin the scoring in the 7th minute.
Liverpool then had a smart break from a Hull corner, Sterling ran hard down the right to cross for Suarez to hit straight at the 'keeper, but before another reaction could be made Suarez tucked in the rebound.
Yannick Sagbo got one back for Hull, after lax defending from Aly Cissokho allowed the striker acres of space to unleash a shot into the top corner. In injury time of the first have Sagbo again found himself in space after a mistake from the returning Daniel Agger and Brady was able to equalise for the away side.
In the last 15 minutes Cissokho had another lapse in concentration allowing Elmohamady to drill home to give the away team the lead. In injury time Liverpool's hopes died when Anthony Annan was sent off for diving.
MOTM - Luis Suarez

Cardiff 0 Liverpool 1

"I had actually started to type up the second half when the goal went in, I didn't see us breaking them down. Up next is Cardiff and I'll be glad to rest the senior players, they need it.

Liverpool aimed to put the bad result against Hull behind them, and they started well Coutinho scoring only for the goal to be ruled out for offside on Iago Aspas.
Jordan Henderson had two late chances in the first half, one cleared off the line and the other brilliantly blocked by Steven Caulker.
Sakho cleared off the line from a Craig Bellamy effort and Luis Suarez was brought down in the box, no penalty was given. Liverpool could not break down Cardiff. Suarez was then taken off through injury leaving 10 men Liverpool to find a way; and find a way they did in the 6th minute of injury time a drilled cross by Steven Gerrard found the head of Daniel Agger, and the ground filled with the noise of 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.
MOTM - Daniel Agger

INJURY NEWS - SUAREZ BREAKS JAW
Luis Suarez, who had been on good form lately, has been ruled out for 4 weeks with a broken jaw sustained in the away match to Cardiff, with Daniel Sturridge returning from injury it will be interesting to see who will start up from for Liverpool in the upcoming FA Cup game against Carlisle.

"Well, there goes my chances of selling him in the January window, no club will want him injured."

MONTHLY ROUND-UP

That was a LONG month, if you managed to read all the way through this post, well done!!
Some highs, but far too many lows. The injuries cost us big time and the tiredness crept into the squad around christmas. NEW YEAR NEWS

NEW YEAR WITH THE NEW BOSS

With the new year beginning we take a look at how Liverpool have been doing under new boss, Frederik Josef.

Before the season started Liverpool were hoping that this would be their only season without European football; the new boss even stated it was the main aim. the media agreed, and Liverpool were predicted to finish 5th this season. Nicely in the Europa League but not close enough to the promised land of the Champions League.

View attachment 390748

With all teams having played 20 games so far, Liverpool find themselves above expectations in 3rd, although behind Everton who currently 2 points ahead of them in 2nd place. Chelsea top the table 6 points clear of their nearest rivals.
Out of the Capital One Cup but still in the hunt for the FA Cup, with the match against Carlisle coming next, the fans would like a run at a trophy to ease the burden of spending the mid-week watching their rivals in Europe.

As for the players...
View attachment 390747

Daniel Sturridge has been getting plaudits all season, and if he keeps up his performances (and goals) will surely be on the shortlist for Player of the Year, alongside teammate Raheem Sterling.
Whereas the English players have found new drive from the new coach, certain foreign players have not flourished as much as expected, Anthony Annan is rumoured to have his loan contract cut short due to a series of poor performances, Brazilian whizzkid Coutinho has failed to adapt to the bosses new tactics, and Luis Suarez has been in and out the team his returning from suspension.

Then for tactics, earlier in the season the Liverpool born manager got the nickname of 'The Tinkerer' from certain quarters of the press, as he changed tactics early in matches that were not going the way he wanted, or surprised us through team selection.

View attachment 390745View attachment 390744View attachment 390743

No less than three formations have been used throughout the season, the general shape in midfield being the most radical changes. With such a small squad to work with it is amazing that just two players (Simon Mignolet and Raheem Sterling) have been ever-present in the league this season.

The most notable bit of information that we found out was that Frederik Josef had, before the Christmas period been offered a new three year deal with the club, but failed to come to terms with the certain over the style of play they wanted at Anfield. Josef is apparently adamant that although he wants a system that goes back to Liverpool's roots, that possession football is not a necessary factor and would prefer to be judged on the attacking qualities of the team. With his contract contract finishing at the end of the season, we will soon find out if Frederik Josef has the chance to become a Liverpool legend, or simply fall by the wayside like so many recent managers.

NO MORE MOYES

With Manchester United lying in 6th heading into Christmas, David Moyes was sacked by Manchester United.
The Scot, chosen personally by Sir Alex Ferguson to succeed him at Old Trafford, started life well winning this seasons first Manager of the Month trophy, but with rumours of a divide between himself and the players the new manager was given the push.
Fans are overall said to be pleased with the decision, as the Ex-Everton manager did not fit well with how Manchester United are expected to play.

Ryan Giggs took charge for a number of games bringing Manchester United back up to 4th, and 10 points behind league leaders Chelsea.
There was however only one man in the running to take the post, and it was the worst kept secret in football.

Jurgen Klopp, the now ex-Dortmund manager was unveiled as the new man in Manchester on New Years day to a baiting crowd. The German had publicly expressed his interest twice while still managing in Germany and once a compensation, believed to be 4.4m, had been agreed Klopp got his wish. The first match in charge will be at home to Swansea.

After 9 starts, 12 games in total, Ghanian International Anthony Annan has left Liverpool after what was described as an underwhelming time at the club by Ian Ayre. The player brought in to replace the void left by Lucas Leiva's sale to PSG, found himself out of the starting line-up and then out of the squad after a serious of 'underwhelming' performances. Ayre said that a few players are on the clubs radar, both loans and permanent, but refused to name names. Jordan Rossiter has been called up to the senior team, and the 16yr old is thought to be inline to start against Carlisle this week.

"We can't hit the target right now, but I'm happy for the kids coming through. Wilson especially looked fantastic. Brad Jones is just as bad on FM than he is in real life."

Liverpool started the game with youngsters Jordan Rossiter, Harry Wilson and Richairo Zivkovic in the line-up; and it took just 17 seconds before they had to grow up as Carlisle took the lead with a 40 yard screamer from Matty Robson. Liverpool will be very disappointed with their first half performance, managing not a single shot on target but hitting the woodwork 3 times.
Harry Wilson scored his first goal for Liverpool with a great shot through the legs of the onrushing keeper as the youngster showed everybody what a talent he is. Sam Byrne put Carlisle straight back infront after Brad Jones seemed lost in his own area, before a penalty by Daniel Sturridge, returning from injury and Richairo Zivkovic put the young Liverpool team through to the next round.
Ryan Kent and Jack Dunn also made their Liverpool debuts.

Liverpool Annouce New Signings

Atletico Madrid's Brazilian midfielder Diego has joined Liverpool on loan until the end of the season. The little Brazilian has found himself on the fringes in Spain this season, and is hoping the move to Liverpool can be made permanent once his contract ends with Atletico in June.
O. Marseille winger Florian Thauvin has also joined on loan, the young frenchman looks set to have a long career and adds pace to an already young Liverpool midfield.
Luis Alberto has joined Norwich on loan to create space for the new signings.

In FA Cup news, Liverpool have their chance for revenge after drawing Reading in the next round. Reading famously handed Frederik Josef his first loss as Liverpool manager in the 3rd round of the Capital One Cup earlier this season.

"Easy game, no danger at all from West Ham and with Kevin Nolan going off injured for the last 10 minutes used it as an excuse to give more game time to the younger players on the bench"

Liverpool scored five when these teams met earlier in the season, and West Ham couldn't have wished for a worse start as James Tomkins nodded the ball into his own net, from a long ball by Raheem Sterling towards Daniel Sturridge. The away side set back and allowed more Liverpool pressure throughout the half, shots rained in from Sturridge, Iago Aspas and Jordan Henderson. Iago Aspas found a whole in the defense and lashed home the second, only for the linesmans flag to already be raised.
Liverpool continued to feel frustrated as Raheem Sterling blasted over the over the bar when presented with a good chance. The match continued the same until the final whistle, Liverpool will be amazed that the scoreline ended 1-0.

"One shot on target in 90 minutes, we managed to hit the post twice and put every shot (including a few from inside the 6 yard box) wide or over. I'm not sure why, I honestly have no idea"

Erik Lamela scored with a header from a near post corner to put Tottenham ahead at Anfield, Jordan Henderson nearly equalised for the home side with a drive from 30 yards which crashed against the post and out for a goal-kick. Christian Eriksen made it two on the stroke of half time as the Danish international outran Martin Kelly for the ball at the far post. Liverpool once again created chances in the first half, without testing the 'keeper.
Florian Thauvin came on for the dreadful James Ward-Prowse and made an immediate impact hitting the bar with a great shot. The Frenchman then did fantastic work down the left hand side, before letting Daniel Sturridge do what he does best to get one back for the Reds. Erik Lamela however put the game beyond doubt, with a perfectly placed shot, unmarked, from inside the area.

"I'm just glad to be through, fully expected a repeat of the last cup game when they fought back. Still can't hit the target for love nor money though."

Kolo Toure had been deemed the 'weak link' in the pre-match talk by the Reading manager, but it has to be seen if he still believes that's true after the centreback opened the scoring. Diego, making his debut after signing on loan from Atletico Madrid, nearly made it two hitting the post from close range after great work from fellow loan signing Thauvin. The little Brazilian however made sure of a goalscoring debut with a beautifully flighted free-kick past the wrong footed Alex McCarthey.
Pavel Progbrnyak can't stop scoring however, and the striker managed to nudge in a goal back, just before the half. Jem Karacan equalised straight from the restart after hitting the post with his first effort and pouncing on the rebound. Is this a replay of the Capital One Cup match?
With five minutes to go, there was indeed a goal, but this time it was Liverpool's. A poor kick out by McCarthy was intercepted by Diego, before Iago Aspas fed the ball through to substitute Coutinho to score the winner, and send Liverpool through.

How is everyone enjoying it so far?

Come the end of the season, I'll be doing another review of the squad including the players I'll have returning from loan (Borini, Jack Robinson etc).

Anything else needs adding, or taking away from the story?

Next update won't be till tomorrow at the earliest; been stuck on an awkward shift pattern at work. Some feedback would be nice though.

With Liverpool having a busy schedule at the start of the year, manager Frederik Josef decided to make a few changes. After coming unstuck recently, with performances and some bad performances, Josef took time to reflect and locked himself away in the training ground not be seen for days until finally coming out of his office with new tactics.
Martin Kelly started, with John Flanagan at left back, while loan signings (Diego & Florian Thauvin) were put into the line up alongside Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. James Ward-Prowse started in midfield against his old club.
Liverpool, away and with new instructions started in the worst way. A defensive lapse allowed Rickie Lambert to poke home from 5 yards, but just after the half hour mark Luis Suarez was able to calmly curl in a free kick; with it looking to be all square at halftime, some excellent work by Ward-Prowse led to Florian Thauvin diving in at the far post to give Liverpool the lead.
As the second half went on Liverpool had more of the upper hand, Thauvin again nearly scoring before an attempted clearance, by rumoured Liverpool target Luke Shaw, pushed Liverpool further in front. Suarez added to his earlier goal by making it 1-4 with 15 minutes still to go.

Liverpool stuck with their attacking ways at Old Trafford, after beating David Moyes' team 3-1 earlier in the season, it was time to go against Jurgen Klopp's version.
Steven Gerrard was the only change to Liverpool's line-up. It was a fairly eve encounter without too much action, a game everyone thought would be first on Match of the Day was more likely to be shown last.
Everton old boy Marouane Fellaini scored with a flick on from a corner, but once again Liverpool scored an equaliser in injury time of the first half to make it even, through a Luis Suarez free-kick.
Straight from the restart Nemanja Vidic had another mistake to remember (he was sent off against Liverpool earlier in the season) as a poor backpass allowed Suarez the time to give Liverpool the lead.
From there on it was a long midfield battle as Liverpool fought to hold their lead.

(F.A. Cup - 5th Round)

After big league games against Manchester United and Chelsea, Liverpool choose to field a weakened team in the F.A. Cup against megabucks Man City.
Liverpool started Jose Enrique for the first time in months as the Spaniard began to build up his fitness, while squad players Joe Allen and Iago Aspas started, as did 16yr old Jordan Rossiter. Manchester City however went with their stars, one of them scored after just 3 minutes; Sergio Aguero finding space without trouble to smash home.
Coutinho broke off down the left to score a long distanced drive to bring Liverpool back on level terms, until the Brazilian gifted a goal to Jesus Navas, from there Manchester City never looked back.

INJURY NEWS - Coutinho out for 5-6 Weeks

The Brazilian, who had lost his starting role in the first team recently, has been ruled out for more than a month with a badly twisted ankle. The injury itself happened in Liverpool's previous game and might open the door for James-Ward Prowse to start showing why Liverpool spend so much of their budget on the midfielder.
Iago Aspas has also been ruled out for two weeks after straining his wrist in training, Liverpool fans don't think they'll notice.

MONTHLY OVERVIEW

It was a great month, I didn't expect anything from the Chelsea game (we played well) and I didn't put a team out to beat Manchester City (too much tiredness made sure of that). We've came over our bump, and I've spent a couple of hours going over the tactics to improve them not I'm nearing the end of my first season.
The injury to Coutinho is a shocker, but that's why Diego was brought in; both the loan signings have added something to the squad.
