Liverpool-Regaining Lost Ground
January 2012
Liverpool's new signings have failed to impress
At the start of this season, expectations were high around Anfield. Champions League football at last seemed to be in sight following two years of disappointment. But now, after twenty league matches, it seemed all but a distant dream. Sitting in sixth place was not what one wanted as a Liverpool fan. Not after the performances of last season after the King took over. One couldn't blame the fans. They'd got some of the best players now in their club. Newcastle hitman Andy Carroll and Ajax striker Luis Suarez were the prime acquisitions a year ago. And six months ago, Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and others joined the two in high profile transfers. And yet, the side inexplicably failed to do what it was built to do. Get back into Europe.
So when John Henry called up Kenny Dalglish on a "casual note" during his visit to England, the media began to speculate that Dalglish's head was going to face the axe. Nothing short of a miraculous six months was going to save the King-according to them.
But Dalglish kept denying this to the press. He said that he had the full support of the board in his management. Unfortunately for him, the board never reciprocated the same sentiments. They stayed silent for the next few weeks. In this crucial period for the club, they took on Wigan, Fulham, Norwich and QPR. While Norwich and QPR proved to be 3-0 wins, a 1-1 draw with Fulham (which was in 3rd place) and a 2-1 loss to Wigan proved too much for the owners to take.
So on the morning of the 3rd of January, 2012, Kenny Dalglish was officially relieved of his duties as Liverpool manager. This evoked a mixed response from the fans, some saying he should be given more time, while others said that John Henry and co. were right to sack him. Discontent seemed to be brewing amongst the Kopites. The players too were of mixed opinions. While most chose to remain silent, Stewart Downing tweeted, "Sad to see Kenny go. Brought me to a great club and he was a true legend. #KingKenny". On the other hand, Suso tweeted "Football is about results. You don't get them you go. Best of Luck Kenny!"
Meanwhile, the media already began speculating.
Possible Candidates for Liverpool Hot Seat
Martin Jol (Fulham)
With Fulham sitting pretty in third place after half a season, the former Ajax boss became the frontrunner to take over the Liverpool job. Jol is a known admirer of the club and has worked with the Reds' talisman striker Luis Suarez before at Ajax Amsterdam.
Meanwhile Martin Jol said about the Liverpool job, "I don't know what is to happen over the coming days. At present, I am committed to Fulham. Beyond that, I don't know."
Roberto Mancini (Manchester City)
Despite given loads and loads of money and having spent those loads on buying star players, Roberto Mancini's pre-season title contenders now sit in 4th spot. And the Sheikh is in no way pleased with the Italian. Rumours are abound that Mancini may well be on his way out before the end of the season and if so, jumping the Liverpool bandwagon would be an ideal way to avoid a sack.
Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid)
Rumours are rife in Madrid that the Argentine manager is not getting on with either his players or his owners and that has resulted in Atletico Madrid languishing in 16th place in the La Liga this season. But if sources from Anfield Road are to be believed, Simeone looks likely to stay at Atletico at least for the time being as the Reds are looking for a more successful manager than Diego.
And the Liverpool management have promised that an appointment will be made before the club's next match against Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup 3rd Round.
