Liverpool-Regaining Lost Ground

January 2012

Liverpool's new signings have failed to impress

At the start of this season, expectations were high around Anfield. Champions League football at last seemed to be in sight following two years of disappointment. But now, after twenty league matches, it seemed all but a distant dream. Sitting in sixth place was not what one wanted as a Liverpool fan. Not after the performances of last season after the King took over. One couldn't blame the fans. They'd got some of the best players now in their club. Newcastle hitman Andy Carroll and Ajax striker Luis Suarez were the prime acquisitions a year ago. And six months ago, Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and others joined the two in high profile transfers. And yet, the side inexplicably failed to do what it was built to do. Get back into Europe.

So when John Henry called up Kenny Dalglish on a "casual note" during his visit to England, the media began to speculate that Dalglish's head was going to face the axe. Nothing short of a miraculous six months was going to save the King-according to them.

But Dalglish kept denying this to the press. He said that he had the full support of the board in his management. Unfortunately for him, the board never reciprocated the same sentiments. They stayed silent for the next few weeks. In this crucial period for the club, they took on Wigan, Fulham, Norwich and QPR. While Norwich and QPR proved to be 3-0 wins, a 1-1 draw with Fulham (which was in 3rd place) and a 2-1 loss to Wigan proved too much for the owners to take.

So on the morning of the 3rd of January, 2012, Kenny Dalglish was officially relieved of his duties as Liverpool manager. This evoked a mixed response from the fans, some saying he should be given more time, while others said that John Henry and co. were right to sack him. Discontent seemed to be brewing amongst the Kopites. The players too were of mixed opinions. While most chose to remain silent, Stewart Downing tweeted, "Sad to see Kenny go. Brought me to a great club and he was a true legend. #KingKenny". On the other hand, Suso tweeted "Football is about results. You don't get them you go. Best of Luck Kenny!"

Meanwhile, the media already began speculating.

Possible Candidates for Liverpool Hot Seat

Martin Jol (Fulham)

With Fulham sitting pretty in third place after half a season, the former Ajax boss became the frontrunner to take over the Liverpool job. Jol is a known admirer of the club and has worked with the Reds' talisman striker Luis Suarez before at Ajax Amsterdam.

Meanwhile Martin Jol said about the Liverpool job, "I don't know what is to happen over the coming days. At present, I am committed to Fulham. Beyond that, I don't know."

Roberto Mancini (Manchester City)

Despite given loads and loads of money and having spent those loads on buying star players, Roberto Mancini's pre-season title contenders now sit in 4th spot. And the Sheikh is in no way pleased with the Italian. Rumours are abound that Mancini may well be on his way out before the end of the season and if so, jumping the Liverpool bandwagon would be an ideal way to avoid a sack.

Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid)

Rumours are rife in Madrid that the Argentine manager is not getting on with either his players or his owners and that has resulted in Atletico Madrid languishing in 16th place in the La Liga this season. But if sources from Anfield Road are to be believed, Simeone looks likely to stay at Atletico at least for the time being as the Reds are looking for a more successful manager than Diego.

And the Liverpool management have promised that an appointment will be made before the club's next match against Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup 3rd Round.

Looking good. As a Liverpool fan it will be intresting to see where it goes, not liking the line up of managment though. Still looking forward to it.

Chapter One- A Surprise Visitor To Merseyside

images

"Rory, where the **** are you?" the editor was shouting. Looking up from his desk, Rory Carson said "Right here boss. At my desk. Need anything?"

"I'll come there. We need to talk." Adrian Naismith, a burly Scotsman from Glasgow said, as he huffed, puffed and squeezed his way through the milliard of desks in the Liverpool Echo Office.

Once he reached Carson's desk, he began talking, "Listen up. We're hearing from our source at the airport that there's a chartered flight from Mexico coming in this evening."

"So?" Carson asked nonchalantly, not looking up from his files.

"And there's information that John Henry and his mates at Anfield are booked for a private meeting at the Brittania Adelphi Hotel this evening with an important guest. I have a good feeling about this one. You'd better go there."

"Is it really necessary?" Carson was already worried about Lisa's reaction. Lisa Claire was his fiancee and she was rather getting ****** off with his late working hours recently.

Rory knew it was no use doing this. Liverpool were any way going to hold a press conference before the Charlton match to announce the new manager, so why the sneak peek at the new man? Anyway, he knew better than to question his superiors. He didn't want to go jobless again. Not after what happened in his two previous newspaper companies. It took a lot of mishaps to get yourself sacked from the Times and the Guardian within two years.

And to add to his problems, whoever the visitor was, he managed to get in secretly. And the meeting was behind closed doors. Even as he sipped his beer, he knew there was no point waiting anymore. He would just go back to his office and explain the circumstances. An hour and half of waiting hadn't brought him anything, so he had no reason to believe another minute extra would. Paying off his bills, he got out into the open.

Just as he was going to open the door of his car, he heard voices. One, he recognised as John Henry. The other he didn't know-though it had a strong American accent, suggesting another director. The third was a man whose voice Rory had heard before. It was Dutch. He was sure he'd heard it before. It was quite some time ago.

Come on. ****** **** who the **** is it? Come on. You've heard it somewhere. Very recently. You know the person.

And then it hit him. Surely it couldn't be. He looked through the darkness, quickly taking out his camera and then clicking a few pics in the night-just so he could be sure. Through the darkness, he could see John Henry shaking hands with him and the Dutchman speaking in halting English "I...will...love to join the club...this week."

Holy ****! To **** with ****** back page headlines! This was going to be front page news tomorrow! Surely, the next man in charge of Liverpool Football Club merited that?

Especially so if he was Johan Cryuff.

Good back story as well as the main story of Liverpool. Also might just be a mistake but Johan's last name is spelt Cruyff, not Cryuff.

Good start to the story. Interesting seeing it from a Journo's eyes. This has got great potiential.
