Introducing ‘Los Leones’ a story set in Bilbao.

8B4C7CB7-6805-4374-B4F8-2BBF9CC01E3C.jpeg

Welcome to the wonderful would of Athletic Club. A truly fascinating club from top to bottom. I am aiming to have long term save with Athletic Club with lots of added challenges to keep me playing way into the future.

Grab a cup of tea and let’s get into the introduction...

So why have I decided to take on Athletic Club?.. Well other than following the KLIPPYBO stories over the years...

79CB5FEC-6916-4C6E-960C-574C61C158DE.png

The challenge: Everyone knows that Athletic Club cannot sign non-Basque players, and encourage developing players through the clubs youth system. Now that’s a challenge I want to take on.

The club can however sign Spanish players aged 16 or below. This gives us the opportunity to bring in players from elsewhere and develop them within the culture of the club.

955619E6-2908-4C9B-82AD-497438438869.png

The culture: It’s clear to see that the culture of the club is close knit. Not many players leave this great club and go on to have a long career in Bilbao.

You just have to look at the player past and present that have amassed hundreds of appearances for the club, some playing a total of 18 years with Athletic Club.

B46C3570-2452-4485-8CDC-722A949B6E02.png

The potential: The youth system at Athletic Club is superb, some of the players they have produced in the past have gone on to play for in World Cups, European Championships, and Champions League Finals. There is so much potential to produce yours players, the big challenge is keeping them at the club.

Current young players such as Iñigo Córdoba, Unai Núñez and Asier Villalibre who all come through the youth system will be pushing for first team places from the start.

The challenges

During this save we won’t to challenge ourselves. The aim of the save is long term play so I have decided to put in some challenges that are going to keep me playing. The challenges have been split into two categories; making history and developing talent. Here’s a summary below:

Making history:

9FC59424-AC25-4BB5-817F-07988B752E86.png

An honourable man:

Fred Pentland is the most successful manager of Athletic Club’s history, winning 2 La Ligas and 5 Cope del Rey titles between 1929 and 1933. The challenge is to surpass his honours and become the most successful manager in the clubs history.

The club stalwart:

Currently José Ángel Iribar holds the record for the most league appearances for Athletic Club, 466. The challenge is to have a player surpass his record and become the clubs all-time leading appearance holder. I would ideally like a newgen to achieve this accolade.

He scores for fun:

Currently Telmo Zarra holds the record for the most league goals for Athletic Club, 255. The challenge is to have a player surpass his record and become the clubs all-time leading goal scorer. Again I would ideally like a newgen to achieve this accolade.

European Giants:

Athletic Club have never won a continental completion. They have however come close, finishing as runners-up twice in 1976/77 and 2011/12. The challenge is to bring a European trophy back to Bilbao, ideally the Champions League.

Developing talent:

34415D84-F3AA-41F5-BF83-BD543829594C.png

Internationally recognised:

In the fashion of wanting a long term save, I have set myself a challenge of producing at least 25 youth graduates that go on to represent Spain at full international level.

A Basque leader:

Again during this long term save I have set myself the challenge of producing a youth graduate that goes on to captain Spain at full international level.

Scored on the world stage:

Not only do I want players to represent and captain Spain, I want them to add more. I have set myself a challenge of producing a youth graduate score at least 25 goals for Spain at full international level.

Los Leones Legend:

Arguably the hardest challenge of them all. I have set myself the challenge of producing a youth graduate that goes on to win the World Footballer of the Year Award (Ballon d’Or). No Basque player has ever won this accolade and the last Spanish player to win this was Barcelona’s original Luis Suárez in 1960.

Now that’s the introduction and challenges out of the way, let’s learn a little about the history of Athletic Club:

27B81672-B1E7-4808-A988-80776EB50B7A.png

Background
The club was formed back in 1898 in the city of Bilbao, in the Basque Country of Spain. In the late 19thcentury, Bilbao was a leading industrial town and attracted many migrant workers, in particular from Britain. These British workers brought football to Bilbao whilst Basque students, who were returned from schools in Britain, also had a keen interest in the game. When they returned from their schools they began to arrange games with the British workers. In 1898m Basque students founded the Athletic Club, using the English spelling.

In 1902, Bilbao Football Club and Athletic Club combined to enter competitions. The team was known as ‘Club Bizcaya’, entered the Copa de la Coronacion in 1902, and went on to win the competition beating a teams such as Club Espanol, New Foot-ball Club, Barcelona and Madrid FC (who went on to become Real Madrid CF in 1920).

Athletic Club went on to play in the first five Copa del Rey finals (one under ‘Union Bizcaya’), winning the first two in 1903 against Madrid FC and 1904 against Espanol de Madrid. The three finals that they lost were all to Madrid FC. The club have gone on to win 23 Copa del Rey trophies in their history.

Athletic Club also went on to win their first La Liga tile in the 1929/30 season where the managed to go undefeated under English manager Fred Pentland. The club have gone on to win 8 La Liga titles in their history, with the last on coming in 1983/84 under manager Javier Clemente.

The club is famous for its transfer policy of only allowing Basque players to play for the club; this is linked to the clubs ‘cantera’ policy of bringing young Basques players through their ranks. The club have followed this policy since 1912 and have been praised for their work in promoting home grown players and club loyalty. Did you know that the club’s nickname is ‘Los Leones’ which in English is ‘The Lions’, quite a catchy name for a title…

To make the save a little different I have decided to start right at the end of the first season, this is for two reasons:

One: I wanted to fit the manager into the story, it will become apart when you find out who it is…

Two: I wanted to work straight away on bringing in new newgens. I was going to start on intake day; however the club got to the final of the Copa del Rey and thought it’s unfair to steal the thunder of the current manager.

So let’s just straight in, first up…

Club culture:

Develop players using the club’s youth system:
As expected with the culture of the club, it’s going to pretty important to give game time to our youth talent, whether that’s with the club or finding them the right loan deal.

Cannot sign non-Basque players: As highlighted before, we can not sign any non-Basque players, so we will have to keep a keen eye on players at other teams such as Real Sociedad, Eibar and Osasuna.

Sign players under the age of 23 for the first team: It’s going to hard to find players of this age good enough to jump straight into the first team, however we will be signing a lot of players below 18 and preparing them for the first team in years to come.

5 year plan…

Work with the budget: Shouldn’t be too hard, however once interest comes in for a few players they are going demand better contracts. Iñigo Martinez is already on £170,000 a week...

83985F4F-4432-41B5-9493-2A80C798339B.png

Europa League: Reach Quarter Final (Minimum): Pretty confident with this one, as long as we can keep players fit and avoid the bigger teams in the knockout stages.

La Liga: Qualify for Champions League: This is going to be a tough one. The team finished 5th in the season just gone. Valencia have both Sevilla strengthened are already look good this year.

Super Cup: The Board have decided that the Super Cup is not important, however we will be having a good go at it.

Challenge for silverware by end of 2021/22 season: We will be hoping to challenge for silverware in a few years, particularly the Copa del Rey, which the club made the final to last season

New manager…

Step forward Markel Susaeta…

1EEA84F4-68C5-4D11-B8DB-CD2AED32C5A7.jpeg

The Athletic Club legend becomes the clubs new manager having retired early due to injury whilst playing for Japanese side Gamba Osaka. Susaeta, 31 also becomes one of the youngest coaches in European Football and shrugged it off by saying “Age is only a number”.

The former Spain international made a total of 507 appearances for Los Leones before leaving last season for Japan.

Some interesting times ahead for Athletic Club...

Backroom Staff…

6323BA0C-8EE7-46A3-A7D6-76364AE5A911.jpeg

We join the club with a very average back room team, if we are going to challenge for the top four we need to improve in every.

I’m pleased to say we made a pretty significant improvement...

We managed to bring it all the best coaches available to us from other clubs, luckily the Basque rule doesn’t apply to staff members.

Not only did we improve our coaching staff we made big changes to our scouting and medical teams, bringing in a new Director of Football, Technical Director and Head Physio.

Facility improvements
As well improving our backroom team we felt the we need to upgrade our facilities. Luckily Susaeta is already a Bilbao legend so the Board said, **** yes!

Of course Iker Muniain was the star that pulled in the shirt sales. It was also good to see former Eibar player Dani Garcia creeping in 5th place.

Season Awards
We also got to see the previous seasons awards...

Fan’s player of the season: Iñigo Martinez
The centre back impressed with his defensive duties last season and quickly became my first choice for club captain this year.

Goal of the season: Iñaki Williams
Well I didn’t see it but I’m sure it was probably a worldie.

Young player of the season: Unai Núñez
The 23 year old centre back had also impressed with his defensive duties when called upon last season. He’s definitely one to look out for this season

We managed to bring in a few players into the club to help bolster the squad:

Javi Martinez - Loan from Bayern Munich

A178253F-CB25-4681-905B-CF42760D23BD.jpeg

Our main signing was former Athletic Club midfielder Javi Martinez from Bayern Munich. The experienced Spain international would fit straight into our current formation, occupying the defensive midfielder spot.

It wasn’t until after we confirmed the transfer that I noticed we had accepted a mandatory fee of £18million for Martinez, let’s hope he has a fantastic season.

Kevin Rodrigues - 3million from Real Sociedad

87325EA7-77A7-4CD7-BF17-112B68871FB2.jpeg

We had just sold our back up left back Mikel Balenziaga to Spartak Moscow and on top of that our first choice left back Yuri had just got injured for 2 months.

Rodrigues is someone who we wanted to bring in anyway, he’s a really good wing back that is a great addition to the squad.

Kike Barja - €1million from Osasuna

D6A91685-8AE2-4ACC-B92C-FDD29FE65294.jpeg

In adhering to our club vision of signing players under 23 for the first team, we brought in Osasuna winger Kike Barja.

During his first couple of weeks at the club we realised that he wasn’t up to first team standard and was sent to play for the B team.

Juan Ramón - 2million from Sevilla

2A62705E-1798-469A-A9B3-1BCA9B57DDD7.jpeg

16 year old winger Juan Ramón joined the club for 2million. A newgen who had just arrived at Sevilla was found by our scouts.

We quickly moved in for Ramón who was attracting interest from Real Madrid, Real Betis and Valencia

Francisco Javier Simón - £1.2million from Osasuna

23D8E3DA-2446-42C7-A4F1-9B70161790D3.jpeg

The 18 year old talented striker joined us from Osasuna. He had been playing at their affiliate club Iruña.

Once again we had to be quick to get the deal done as other Spanish clubs were sniffing around.

Víctor Manuel Grant - £1.5million from Girona

778C24C3-B522-45BC-90BA-CA165DC51B64.jpeg

Another 16 year old, attacking midfielder Grant was a player that caught my eye having been found spotted by one of our scouts.

Girona turned down a number of bids but we managed to get them to agree to £1.5million.

We did grab hold of some more newgens but don’t want to bore you with them all.

[La Liga] Barcelona 1 vs Athletic Club 0
We kicked of our La Liga campaign against Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona. With no recognised left back due to injury and the Rodrigues deal being delayed we had to play De Marcos our of position.

[La Liga] Villarreal 1 vs Athletic Club 1
The last game of the month saw us travel to Villarreal. The home side had been in good form so it bound to be a tough game.

We were really unlucky to take home all three points having led the game for 70 odd minutes through a Aritz Aduriz goal.Villarreal’s Gerard Moreno found himself in acres of space nodded in a late equaliser for the home side.

Lineup: Simon, Capa, I Martinez, Yeray (Nuñez), Rodrigues, J Martinez, D Garcia, Muniain, Williams, Córdoba (Gomez), Aduriz.

[La Liga] Athletic Club 0 Celta Vigo 0

[Europa League] Athletic Club 2 Malmö FF 0
Back to Europa League action as we welcomed Swedish side Malmö FF. Another chance for us to rotate some players.

Lineup: Simon, Capa, I Martinez, Yeray, Yuri, D Garcia, Muniain, Beñat (R Garcia), Williams, Córdoba, Villalibre (Aduriz).

Nearing the end of the month, we come up against another local side in Eibar. Like Sociedad, Eibar were down the bottom of the league in need of a win.

But we weren’t going to let them happen. We tortured Eibar from start to finish. Asier Villalibre and Capa grabbed the goals to earn us all three points.

Lineup: Simon, Capa (De Marcos), I Martinez, Nuñez, Yuri (Rodrigues), D Garcia, Muniain, Vesga, Williams, Córdoba, Villalibre.

[La Liga] Athletic Club 3 Atlético Madrid 0
Our last game of the month and also our hardest one too. We welcomed Atlético Madrid to San Mamés.

Luckily we also put in our best performance of the season. We fought off some early scares but dominated the rest of the game. Iñigo Córdoba scores a brace whilst Asier Villalibre added another goal to his tally.

Lineup: Simon, Capa, I Martinez, Nuñez, Yuri (Rodrigues), D Garcia, Muniain, Beñat (Vesga), Williams, Córdoba, Villalibre.

Well, an unbeaten moth scoring 19 goals in 7 matches, I’ll take that!

League standings:
After a very good month we sit 5th in the league 1 point behind Sevilla.

*Unfortunately I’ve only have screenshots of the league every few months.

Looking good. How is Vivian? He cant even get a game in my B team at the minute but the first season is always a right off for me regarding the lower teams. Once all the contracts are expired I go on a spending spree lol

[Europa League] Malmo FF 1 Athletic Club 3
We started November off with an away trip in the Europa League. Swedish side Malmo FF were the opponents and wanted revenge for their loss at San Mames.

Malmo FF started off well but they couldn’t deal with the pace of Inaki Williams and Inigo Cordoba. Malmo FF went ahead but shortly after Benat equalised. In the second half Iker Muniain and Inigo Cordoba added to the scoresheet to get another win for Los Leones in the group stage of the Europa League.

Lineup: Simon, Capa (De Marcos), I Matrinez, Yeray, Rodrigues, Vesga, Muniain, Benat (R Garcia), Williams, Cordoba, Villalibre (Aduriz).

[La Liga] Levante 1 Athletic Club 2
Back to La Liga action we faced an away trip to Levante. Levante had been struggling of late and were just keeping their heads above the relegation zone.

We added more stress to the fire as we went away with all three points. Levante put up a good fight but could only get a consolation goal. Our goals come from Inaki Williams and Kevin Rodrigues.

Lineup: Simon, Capa, Matrinez, Nunez, Rodrigues, D Garcia, Muniain, R Garcia, Williams (Lopez), Gomez, Villalibre (Aduriz).

[La Liga] Real Betis 4 Athletic Club 2
Next up was high flying Real Betis, it wasn’t until I seen their lineup that they have some pretty good players, luckily Nabil Fekir had recently left for Real Madrid.

Betis simply blew us away. They pounced on our mistakes and made us pay, Giovani Lo Celso was unbelievable. We were able to grab two goals through Inigo Cordoba and Artiz Aduriz.

Lineup: Simon, Capa, Matrinez, Nunez (Yeray), Yuri, D Garcia, Muniain, Benat (Vesga), Williams, Cordoba, Villalibre (Aduriz).

[Europa League] Athletic Club 3 AS Moncao 2
We then welcomed AS Monaco to San Mames, desperate to revenge our loss at the Stade Louis II earlier this season.

The game was tremendous, end to end entertainment. We went 2-0 up in the first half with goals form Inaki Williams and Asier Villalibre. AS Monaco got back into the game scoring two quick-fire goals in the second half. In the final minutes of the match Artiz Aduriz climbed above his marker and headed home a dramatic winner.

Lineup: Simon, Capa, Matrinez, Yeray, Yuri, D Garcia, Muniain, Benat (J Martinez), Williams, Cordoba (Gomez), Villalibre (Aduriz).

[La Liga] Real Madrid 6 Athletic Club 0
The final game of the month was our toughest, a trip to the Santiago Bernabeu to face Real Madrid. Los Blancos were top of the league and absolutely flying, it would be tough to get anything from this game.

Wow. That’s the worst result I have ever had on Football Manager. We lost 6-0 to a magnificent side. We can’t even make up excuses as Unai Nunez didn’t get sent off until the hour mark.

Lineup: Simon, Capa, Nunez, Yeray, Rodrigues, D Garcia, Muniain (J Martinez), Benat (Vesga), Gomez (Aduriz), Cordoba, Williams.

Three wins out of five is not too bad but the Real Madrid result does leave a bad taste in my mouth, might have to sleep that one off…

League standings:
At the end of November we sit in 5th a point behind Niko Kovacs, Zaragoza.

Thank you. He’s good and making decent progress but only came in due to injuries and suspensions. He does feature more though further into the season (bear in mind I’m in the second season too).
