One tactic that does the wonders against everything doesnt exist anymore since fm2014 and is 100% true and i think even 3 are not enough to be succesfull. And i did find that u can use alot of higher number of tactics that can have 100% familiarity and number of tactic can reach 6561 tactics or even higher if u use defensive line or PI variations further more inside this tactics.Every formation has his weakness and strenghts that can work in your favor or against you depending of your type of players and from type of formations. So for example u can train 3 formulas for tactics(for example 433 442 451) with 3 different mentalities 3 different passing styles 3 fluid system and further more 3 of each that u can train inside tactic menu and u wont loose familiarity if combined. The potential for tactical side that u can create in this game is huge and im abit surprised no one explored this and most try to find the 1"wonder" tactic that hasnt weakness and this is from start wrong.
This post is not intended as a troll post :) and is more phylosophical food for thought for tacticiens but it can deliver alot more effieciency imo if u know what tactic and when to use it and if this strategy with higher pool of tactics is applied correctly.

I agree with most of what you say, and that pretty much describes my approach. I'm now up to season 2025/26. It took me about three seasons to really get to grips with the tactics function in this game, but it was when I decided to start using three sets of tactics and selecting the one most suited to each opponent match-by-match that I really started to become successful. I also watch the matches in the Comprehensive animation view, so I can see what is working or where things are breaking down.

To establish my tactical credentials, here's my up-to-date Roll of Honour in my ongoing Southampton save - in which I am the reigning European and Club World Champion (and currently top of the Premier League at Christmas):
http://www.fm-base.co.uk/forum/foot...3194-diary-season-st-marys-redemption-37.html

If you use the same tactics continuously then opponents start to figure you out, and new recruits whose strengths and weaknesses are different to the players they replace in your squad will also have an impact. So for the last few seasons I have been making a point of reviewing my tactics during each pre-season and I generally replace one within my set of three each summer.

4-4-1-1 with a Shadow Striker behind a Deep-Lying Forward has been a constant for me, since I finally worked out how to get the best from Jay Rodriguez, but I have also used:

- 4-5-1 Assymetric
- 4-5-1 V-Shaped midfield (or 4-3-3)
- 3-5-2 with a flat midfield five

...and currently:
- 4-2DM-1-2-1 with an attacking left-back overlapping a right-footed Inside Forward_Support and a conventional right winger
- 5-3-2 with Complete Wing-Backs either side of a Regista; BWM and AP in midfield; DLF and AF upfront

And there have been some other formations that I experimented with during pre-season campaigns that I quickly rejected, such as another version of 5-3-2 that had a No.10 tucked up behind the front two.

All tactics have their strengths and weaknesses, as you say. The key is to work out which tactics allow the maximum number of your players to play in their preferred positions, in their preferred roles, where they can execute their Preferred Moves. And how those formations/tactics work when up against your opponents' systems. The 4-2DM-1-2-1, for example, has proven very successful for me when playing against top teams who play 4-2-3-1 and has enabled me to get the better of Chelsea and Manchester United in the majority of our head-to-head meetings over the last few seasons, as demonstrated here:
http://www.fm-base.co.uk/forum/foot...-2dm-1-2-1-antidote-opposition-4-2-3-1-a.html

I modified that tactic this season by signing a specialist Regista from Arsenal, making that pair of DMs slightly less defensively-minded and helping us to control possession higher up the pitch. The presence of that Regista, and my desire to have at least one formation with a genuine two up-front, prompted me to take a look at 5-3-2 - and the Advanced Playmaker_Attack running at teams from the M(C) line is a throwback to my 3-5-2.

The 4-4-1-1 works well when my scouting reports identify 4-4-2 as a formation that my opponent doesn't like to face, and it enables me to rotate different players into the team. More on that one here:
http://www.fm-base.co.uk/forum/foot...1-real-4-4-2-how-i-learned-play-triangle.html

My new Shadow Striker is 6'4" but when high crosses into him and the DLF aren't working, I can switch to a Trequartista behind a Complete Forward_Support to change the style of our attack, running at them through the middle and working the channels a lot more.

Sometimes I get my tactical selection wrong, but knowing how these systems work and which players are well-suited to what enables me to make changes quickly and decisively where necessary - such as when I came back from 0-2 after 45 minutes at West Brom to win 3-2 by switching formations at half-time.

Well i am glad that other people agrees me and u can aproach this game in a different manner more logical and more versatile when it come to tactics, and if this strategy is applied correctly its impossible to not have better results compared with using just 1 downloaded tactic from this forum.
Having in mind what i said in OP im starting an experiment in this direction playing as manager in Romanian Division starting from 2nd league and using ACS Poli from my native town(im promoted already with only 2 looses all season but yeah it was expected since media prediction is 1) and trying to getting my team better with every year.
I made 3 tactics to insert them for training and none of this formations will be used its just for learning familiarity of different aspects of tactics such as formation on pitch mentality, passing, style, creative, freedom, closing down, marking, tempo and width.
#Tactic nr 1
Formation:4141
Mentality:Attacking
Creative Freedom:Very Fluid(Be more expressive ticked in TI)
Passing style:short(with retain possesion, pass into space, work ball into box ticked in TI)
Closing Down:Hassle opponents
Marking:Man Marking so Use Tighter Marking is unticked because this would mean zonal marking if ticked
Tempo:lower tempo
Width: Play Wider

Tactic nr 2
Formation:41221(451 with advanced wingers formation)
Mentality: Deffensive(i am not a fan of counter mentality so i will pick who will make the forward runs depending on opossition while being even more safe by having defensive mentality)
Creative Freedom:Very Rigid(combined with be more expressive)
Passing style:Mixed(with retain possesion, pass into space, work ball into box ticked in TI)
Closing Down:Moderate(so hassle opponents and stand off remain unticked)
Marking:Zonal Marking(so use tighter marking is ticked)
Tempo:higher tempo
Width: Play Narrow

Tactic nr 3
Formation:4231
Mentality:Control(its nice to choose between control and attack mentalities i preffer to have 2 offensive mentalities rather than 2 deffensive to train)
Creative Freedom:Balanced(combined with be more expressive)
Passing style:More Direct(with retain possesion, pass into space, work ball into box ticked in TI)
Closing Down: stand Off opponents
Marking:Zonal
Tempo:Much Lower
Width:Normal(neither narrow or wide)

So i have this 3 tactics to train different aspects of tactics and probably will be used very rarely since what i will use is a "cocktail" from all 3 tactics depending on whatever the opossition the weather their weaknesses and so on.For example if i have all this 3 tactics familiarity 100 % on everything than i can make a tactic 4231 to go for a big win against some small team home that play 4411 and i will call it 4231 vExtremeOffense1.Also i will save this tactic in tactics folder to can have acces to this tactic in case circumstance will be similar and ill decide use again this.
4231 vExtremeOffense1 will have following
Formation:4231 (obviously :) )
Mentality:Atacking
Creative Freedom:Very Fluid(Be more expressive)
Passing style:short(with retain possesion, pass into space, work ball into box ticked in TI)
Closing Down:Hassle
Marking:Man Marking
Tempo:Low
Width:Wide
This tactic is just an example since as i said variables that i can use allow me to use 6k+ tactics without loosing familarity(or very close to 100% but from my tests it looks u dont loose any familiarity). Also i will start the match with a tactic from those 3 trained to confuse Ai and when match starts i will switch to 4231 vExtremeOffense1 designed especially for them :).

My experiments seems to give good results since 2nd season i finished 1st but was a close one and this is not bad for a new promoted team even if Romanian Division isnt such high skill like Serie A Premiere League etc this is still impressive.Last match was tough and won 2-1 with goal in min 89 away vs team that i lost the finale for Cup but im glad it came like this since winning the league is much more important. Its clearly an overachievement and is the living proof that this strategy with using limitless mixed tactics can give good results.
Also as a note in some matches ME is worse enemy and your tweaks doesnt work as efficient as it should since this is still a simulation and it cannot be perfect like in real life but at least it can give some satisfaction overall when u have good results. Most used formation that i played was variations of 4141 and it was mostly vs stronger team(half of division teams were stronger than my team haha)or teams that used balanced formations on both wings and midfield such as 4231 442 and 451.Also to play in this manner u need watch matches extended mode and react everytime something goes bad or u struggle defensively or u dont count in attack and u need try something else.
