How can I get him to get more involved in the game. He is playing as a deep lying playermaker in a three man central midifield (He's in DM position) he is getting around 40 passes a game atm...any ideas?

short passes and make him the play maker

already done that, but thanks for the imput i've managed to get him up to about 50 passes now sometimes..how mcuh creatice freedom should i give him? and does make his mentality defenive mean he'll play deeper cause thats what i want
