You also have to be patient with this game. I finished 6th, 3rd, 6th, 6th and then 8th before I finally won the Premier League with Southampton in my ongoing save. Since then, I've been 2nd, 1st and 2nd again (...but only due to an injury-time equaliser by Newcastle for 3-3 on the last day of the season costing me a third title while my rivals Manchester United choked 0-1 at already-relegated Swansea City. I'm not bitter!). I've also won the Europa Cup and reached the Champions League semi-finals a couple of times.
I won a few domestic cups in the first five seasons, but I built and then re-built my squad before I won the Premier League for the first time when a block of promising young players reached their potential, with the likes of Tom Ince (more about whom shortly), Luke Shaw, James Ward-Prowse, Nathaniel Clyne and Jay Rodriguez as the more experienced heads in the team. But in my very first season, the only player I signed was Tom Ince from Blackpool - sending 3.2-million plus Kelvin Davies AND Guly do Prado in the opposite direction.
My tactics have gone from 4-5-1 Assymetric (which I developed in FM12) to 4-4-1-1 and 4-5-1, and now I'm using a 3-5-2 which yields goals galore but can leave us vulnerable in the defensive channels if the opposition knows to deploy a decent No.10 to exploit the space between my back three and the Advanced Playmaker who operates from the centre of my midfield five. I will experiment with pulling the two other central midfielders into the DM line and turning my existing Wide Midfielders_Support into Wingers_Attack.
None of which necessarily means very much in-and-of itself, other than to say that I have been quite successful in FM14 with my Southampton team but 10 seasons in, I'm still learning and tweaking and trying new things to suit my current set of players and to combat the teams around me - who are all capable of getting better or worse year-on-year, independently of anything I do.
I suspect that many of the FMers who are still complaining about this edition of the game are getting about as far as season 3, and wondering why they're not dominating England, Europe, the World and the outer reaches of our known Galaxy (Sepp says you can play football on Mars!) with their FC United squad! I exaggerate, of course, but you get the gist.
