Its a tough job being a Stockport fan these days!! I feel promotion is an achievable goal this season. I remember seeing Kevin Francis terrorising the Alex defence a Gresty Road in the nineties!! Big lad!

Harrogate 0-1 Stockport County (Skrill North)

The next fixture on the horizon is Harrogate. They are seasoned campaigners at this level and as such should not be taken lightly. We had a full five days off and as such the players were looking fresher in terms of condition percentage.
View attachment 441111View attachment 441110

I selected the team that I would consider to be my strongest now that I am no longer shackled to fitness issues. Charnock returned to the centre of defence and Tuncliffe moved back to the bench. In all fairness Tuncliffe was phenomenal against Colwyn Bay. He is certainly now in my thoughts but right now I want to give Charnock a chance to shine.

I also elected to replace Verma with Lofthouse on the left wing. With Lofthouse being a designated winger it gave me the feel of a more balanced theme to the side.
View attachment 441109

As per usual I went 4-4-2. I?ve mentioned why before and the reason remain now. We getting quite fluid now and the players are building their tier one partnerships and tier two partnerships very well and as a result the standard of football at time is startling.
View attachment 441108

At the pre match team talk I told the players that they could keep the run going here. The reaction was an odd one as a lot of players got down about it. As a result I followed it in to each department with a I have faith which rectified the situation.
View attachment 441107

The game started with us slightly on top. Neither side were fashioning any real chances but we were holding the ball better, passing better and what few chances there were they fell to us. It almost became a grind down the centre as both side kind of smashed into each other in the centre of the field.

Toward the end of the half we forced a succession of corners and they were partly skin of the teeth defended or well saved. This represented the best spell of real pressure that we exerted.

At half time the game was still in the balance and I felt that if the current trend continues we would sneak the win. However if I was the Harrogate manager I?d be in and amongst them in the dressing room.

I told the players that we could still win the game today and had a word with two of the players and got a nice positive reaction.
View attachment 441113

One area I was disappointed by, in the first half was the lack of real penetration down the flanks and sought to address that at half time. To that end I issued the instruction to play wider and to exploit the flanks. A large part of the success we?ve had in the previous four games was the fact we had wingers rampaging down the flanks.
View attachment 441112

There was a lack of it in the first half.

The second half began with us kicking off and I was particularly pleased that a lot of our effort was directed wide. In particular Moke who was pretty anonymous in the first began to stretch his legs down the right.

The game down the centre had degenerated into a hard tackle contest and the bookings were starting to rack up. In particular I though Bolder should have been sent off as his foul count was ridiculous, even after been booked for persistent fouling.

Just after the hour Jevons slipped a fantastic ball around the last man and it was picked up by Dennis on an angled run who took it even further wide and in turn creating a good angle himself and fired it home. Just what the doctor ordered. Harrogate at this point were coming more and more into the game.

In fact from that point on Harrogate took the initiative and didn?t really let go. They had a golden chance to equalise to Ormson made another crucial one on one save.

I was relieved to get over the line for a second consecutive 1-0 win. Two clean sheets now shows defensive strength beginning to grow and also a resilience which ultimately brings championships. Of course I am not saying that we will win the title but that is the ultimate aim.

View attachment 441117View attachment 441116
The players were told post game that it was a good win (which it was) and well done (which was deserved).
View attachment 441115

Ian Craney picked up an injury during the course of the game and will be out for about a month so Verma and Bateman now have a chance to stake a claim on a starting position. Verma is in pole position as he is a much better player.

After five games I am delighted to be top of the table and with a four point gap I am pleased to have that small cushion to work with. Still very early so no chickens are as of yet accounted for.
View attachment 441118

We now have a few weeks of Saturday to Saturday games so this should aid us nicely in terms of recovery.

Next up is Gainsborough Trinity and they are having a sensible season and won?t be pushovers.

any tips to give me or recommended players within the budget?

Some Points of administration

After the Harrogate fixture I was aware of Club captain Kyle Jacobs?s relatively low rated performance. Personally I was quite content with what he is doing. His passing can be wayward at times but he?s resolving that issue slowly and occasionally he gets sucked into the centre and that results in a scramble but again he is getting better at that.

The fans have voiced some concerns over his performance so I decided to have a word on the quiet.
Needless to say that didn't quite go as intended but could have been a lot worse. I always try and deal with FM as if I would in real life and not make fantasy FM decisions (!) so I believe I was being honest in stating that's his form dipped. Now I kind of regret being assertive in responding to his cautious approach but the manager lead so it's my way or the highway.
View attachment 441058

I will be monitoring his performance closely because as captain he should be shinier than the rest and I am in the market for a right sided full back anyway.

But that's for slightly in the future.

I received an unexpected message from the Conference league telling me that I had won the Skrill North Manager of the Month award. I was surprised because I wasn't aware that there was such an award. Sweet!
View attachment 441056View attachment 441057

As a result I would just like to thank my staff and my players for their hard work in making this come to pass. I would like to thank my agent and my family for their support. The most important people the fans for supporting me through the bad times and coming out tonight in this weather. I'd like to thank God, the Queen..... oh the emotion.

Still unexpected is the bestest!

Paris Bateman

As I mentioned him recently I see this as a perfect opportunity to introduce Paris Bateman.

Unfortunately as you can see I suspect that Paris is unlikely to be at Edgeley Park much longer. His attributes are simply not of a standard that I can accept. He can't tackle, pass or shoot which are essentially the three major core skills. They are of a low enough standard that I can't see him developing quick enough to match pace with the rest of the squad and his contract expires at the end of the year so he is under an enormous time pressure.
Somehow he is one of the best players at the club so I can only assume copious amounts of hallucinogens were being distributed during the off season recruitment meetings.
View attachment 439969

He currently only has five career games under his belt, four on loan at Nantwich Town during his Crewe Alexandra days and a brief substitute appearance for us on bank holiday Monday. In all fairness the squad was tired and he was one of the few left with a decent level of fitness.
View attachment 439968

I foresee his role at the club being, as a player, minimal. We have no budget left, indeed slightly over, and should I release him on a free will free up around 250 pounds per week, which will convert down to around 200 pounds per week.
As it stands I am currently looking at players to bring in, especially on the right, and should someone appear then I think Paris's spell at Stockport County will come to an end.

An interesting point about Paris is that he has a staff profile at the age of 19. Cruelly though it is of a much better standard than his playing skills. His coach youngsters rating is pretty decent, which you would expect from someone schooled in football at Crewe and his other coaching skills are decent.
View attachment 439967

I half harbour an idea of appointing him as a youth coach or even head of youth development for next year and see how he develops in that role. Since we currently have no youth coaching going on and as an afterthought no youth players it could be a nice way of evolving that side of the coaching infrastructure.

Stockport County 2-2 Gainsborough Trinity (Skrill North)

Another full work weeks rest and training and the players are settling into a decent routine. A standard of fitness is now achieved and it is something we can work with. It seems to me that in order to get a top level of fitness we would need to go professional. That's a happy coincidence because that's exactly what I?m looking for to happy for the start of next season. Weather the board are into that idea will be a vital factor in any potential contract negotiations as the seasons roll on.

However that is in the future and more important the present is Gainsborough Trinity. After five wins from five, fifteen points, being top of the league I was keen to continue the good form. However a concern was the Manager of the Month award and the inherent curse that comes with it.
View attachment 438877View attachment 438876

There were two changes to the team with the return of Iain Howard and Aman Verma coming into the midfield in place of the Bobby Lofthouse, who drops to the bench, and the injured Ian Craney.
View attachment 438878

This enables us to continue in the 4-4-2 formation in counter to Gainsborough?s likely 4-4-2.
View attachment 438879View attachment 438875
The game started lightening quick with Phil Jevons chipping the Gainsborough keeper after about 40 seconds. Dennis received the ball turned and played Jevons through the centre of the static Gainsborough defence and lobbed the keeper deftly.

At this point I was looking for us to dominate and sweep them away. In fairness for about fifteen minutes it was going that way. There were no further early goals and Gainsborough began to feel their way into the game a little bit.

After a shiny first fifteen the game became very scrappy and that didn't go away until the final whistle. It degenerated into a sloppy game with lots of stop/start periods due to numerous fouls, which for some reason the referee seems to think seven fouls by Barry Quinn in eighteen minutes does not constitute persistent fouling.
A theme for the rest of the game was both defences were solid in actual defensive work but poor in the recycling of the ball, with both my full backs especially culpable. This was combined with both attacks, though stretching the game, failed to really cut through and create chances.

That being said Gainsborough got themselves an equaliser. Charnock fouled Williams and conceded a free kick about thirty five yards out. The free kick was knocked forward about five yards and Charnock got Williams again. From the second free kick Williams thumped it hard and more or less straight at the keeper who, it looked like, miss judged it and attempted to punch it away. Ormson somehow parried it the opposite direction and just inside the post.

The game continued in the established pattern of defences giving the ball away and the attacks not cutting through and turning the ball over and so forth.

At half time I told the men that they could still win the game and that didn't get the fire in the belly response I was after. I made no adjustments in the break. My reasoning was that as poor as the first half was, both sides, I felt our individual quality would create at least one or two chances.
View attachment 438880

I did feel that if it didn't improve I could change it around at the sixty minute mark when my first scheduled substitution takes place.

The second half unfortunately continued in the same pattern as the first despite a tweaking of tactics, first going to an even more shorter neater pattern game with intent to pick the apart, whilst stretching them wider and then a more direct wider game with a shoot on sight option.

As the game wore on Gainsborough began to get space down the left. O'Halloran was not dealing with the winger at all and this was a concern. His fitness was dropping quick so I made a decision to switch Fagbola to the full back slot and replaced O'Halloran with Tuncliffe.

This did not stifle the aggressive wing play and on the seventy minute mark I was pushing the team even more forward. Not as much to get the winner but more to actually get some actual shots on goal.

We needed a spark to get us going forward and as it happens we got one. Fagbola was skinned again and delivered a sensible cross which both centre backs didn't really commit to going for and Barraclough rose to nod home inside the six yard box unchallenged. Needless to say I was not pleased.

From the kick off my guys looked interested. It is worth pointing out that at this point, 73 minutes in, there had been three shots by each side. We began to slick the ball about and began to menace their defence a little bit more and a couple of long range shots, blocked and wide, we were able to push in a few corners and the third rapid fire corner fell to a completely unmarked Tuncliffe at the corner of the six yard box and tapped into an empty net. The Gainsborough keeper was at the far post for some unknown reason and got nowhere near the ball.

From that point there was only going to be one winner, if there was to be one, and that was us. We had a lot more urgency but ultimately Gainsborough dug in and held on.
View attachment 438883View attachment 438882

I told the players that I wasn?t happy with that performance and that we should be winning games like that. There was a general acceptance of that appraisal.
View attachment 438884

We retained the top spot in the league but the lead was reduced to three points. There's is an enormous way to go so far too early to begin to ice the champagne.

just taken up the Stockport reigns myself how are you managing with so little wages??

To be honest pretty well. There is 200 pound available and I brought in a keeper and a defender. The squad is weak down the right but I intend to go through the loan system. I do have Bateman to release to free funds up and I have fell out with Turner and he wants to leave so that frees about five hundred pounds for reinvestment as and when appropriate targets become clear.

Ultimately I want to keep spending low as I think we will win promotion as we are so don't see why I should be throwing additional wage budget away, unless a really good player who can have an effect on the Skrill Premier as well.

Point of note is that every players contract expires at the end of the year so there's enormous room for maneuver as the season wears on.

be impressive to see what you can do with the squad at end of the season!

be impressive to see what you can do with the squad at end of the season!
To be honest the entire squad is on trial with very few looking likely to get new contracts come May. Theseason is long and we will see how they develop.

A minor point

After the Gainsborough game I was accosted by Rhys Turner. Rhys has the thankless task of being a fourth choice striker. He essentially wanted game time which I want prepared to give at this present time.

The conversation didn't go well at all.
View attachment 434063View attachment 434062

As a result I still plan to utilise him as a fourth choice striker and he will still be factored into the overall fixture structure when appropriate and it will remain up to him to take his opportunity as and when they are presented to him.

He however is now on the transfer list and the loan list and is scheduled to face Stockport Sports Under 21's with our Under 21's.

Stockport County 2-0 Leamington (Skrill North)

View attachment 433452View attachment 433450
Leamington rocked up to Edegely Park and I named my strongest side that I had available. It was the same side which got a draw last time out against Gainsborough.
View attachment 433453

I elected to once again go with the now tried and tested 4-4-2. The intel which came back on Leamington suggested 4-5-1 and they didn't disappoint. I would bet on my guys (not if the FA asks) against any formation any team puts against us in this division.
View attachment 433451
View attachment 433459

Next up is Vauxhall Motors followed by Stalybridge Celtic and then a nice FA Cup tie against AFC Fylde. Its busy busy but that's the nature of the beast at the moment but I have scheduled a week of fitness training in the week prior to the cup tie.
View attachment 433449

The game started and Leamington had 100 percent possession for the first two minutes but after slipping the ball out of play for our goal kick we went straight up the other end and forced a very soft corner.

It was played into the near post by Verma and an almighty scrambled with three or four shots pinging around inside the six yard box before Jevons knocked it home. Another trademark lightening start.

Unfortunately the game stalled at four minutes. The passing was poor, from both sides and this contributed to a midfield slog. Now considering them had an extra man in the midfield they failed utterly to simply hold on to the ball. In all fairness we failed utterly to capitalise on their weak play.

Fortunately we had a goal lead so the longer the game wore on the happier I was because if the game continued to be this awful we would still have three points.

That being said at half time I made a slight change as I wasn't about to rely on the opposition being poor for the second half too. I told the guys to work the ball into the box with thinking that that by keeping the ball away from Leamington we could dominate possession and simply at worst run out of time for the win.
View attachment 433458View attachment 433457

The second half followed the pattern of the first with two notable exceptions. One Leamington managed a shot a goal and the second was Bobby Lofthouse surging past one defender, cutting inside a second to fire home at the death to finish Leamington off.

Over all we deserved to win and we did so absolutely no complaints in that respect. The performance though was not vintage and despite having one of the best defences in the division, my defenders are getting lot match ratings and the fans are starting to voice their opinions. However I don't listen to the fans if they are wrong.
I told the players it was a good win, which it was. If we can win while turning in a poor performance then I can live with that.
View attachment 433456View attachment 433455View attachment 433454

The league table is only seven games in but three clear at the top of the league and seven clear inside the play offs are not the worst sets of numbers at all.

Vauxhall Motors 1-3 Stockport County (Skrill North)

It was a slight change of pace to have a mid-week game for the first time in a while; however the consequence was three games in seven days.
View attachment 430460View attachment 430459

There was one enforced change from the game against Leamington with Bobby Lofthouse starting on the right wing, which is his wrong side. He was replacing the injured Adrian Moke.
View attachment 430462

As per usual I opted for 4-4-2. We are quite comfortable with it and with such a mediocre performance last week this is a fantastic chance for the team to put in a more explosive performance. The scouting on Vauxhall Motors suggested they were going to go 3-5-2. I had no real inclination to change as the way I saw it with only three at the back they would have a hard time countering our forward line and pound for pound I would expect our midfielders to be better than theirs.
View attachment 430461

I told the guys in the pre match chat that I would expect them to keep the good run going. This did not get the head butting the walls response I'm still looking for. I told the attack and defence I have faith and got a mediocre response and when I told the midfield there was no pressure on then got a woefully underwhelming response especially by Iain Howard, who is not the shiniest performer at the moment.
View attachment 430458

As the game started I was hoping for a swift out the blocks early goal which has been the hall mark of our recent games and this game didn't let me down. Unfortunately it was Vauxhall Motors who struck with the early goal at a windswept and rainy Rivacre Park.

A corner from the right drifted in right into the heart of the six yard box was inexplicably headed toward goal by Charnock. It would have been a decent finish at the other end. I not sure Charnock should be heading it toward goal but there you go. Can't do anything about it now.

I wanted a response from the players and whilst I contemplated what to tweak the boys exploded. The equaliser was a mere five minutes away. However in those five minutes, if it was a boxing match the referee would have stopped it. We pulled Vauxhall Motors to pieces and Vauxhall had virtual fell apart as a cohesive unit. We forced a rapid series of corners which were all delivered superbly by Howard and on the third time of asking Jevons was unmarked to volley home from about seven yards dead centre. A perfect response.

Four minutes later we were ahead. Bobby Lofthouse put a powerful run together and ghosted past a defender and surged into the box before squaring to Dennis who slotted home past the keeper from about sixteen yards. A tremendous turnaround and in such a short space of time.

However it kept on coming. Their full back cleared up the field straight to Fagbola whose simple header was picked up by Verma and after a quick exchange of passes with Hand it was played up to Howard who headed down to Dennis in an identical position to his first goal to again fire home. The outing was looking better.

The half wore on and Vauxhall did produce two further decent chances both from set pieces and both cleared off the line. That's clearly something which will need to be addressed in training.

It was 3-1 at the half and when I got the players in at half time I told them was pleased with the performance. Everyone except the goal scorers reacted well so I spoke to Jevons and Dennis individually telling them I was delighted and this got the good response I was looking for.
View attachment 430464

I didn't make any adjustments to the way we were playing and sent the guys back out into the rain.

The second half for us became an exercise in preserving the players' fitness and as the game moved on I began replacing the players who were tiring. Vauxhall Motors never really looked like coming back into the game and in fact we could have had a fourth but for a good stop by their keeper.

The second half was unspectacular; the kind of half you can have when you?re three one up and we picked up no injuries and more importantly the three points.
View attachment 430469View attachment 430467

I told the men that I was I was pleased with the result and performance and that generally got a good response.
View attachment 430471

The league table looks pretty good at this still very early juncture. Hednesford play tomorrow so as a result we hold a six point lead at the top.
View attachment 430472

In short: most happy.

Next up is Stalybridge Celtic in the league and an FA Cup tie. In the back of my mind I'm thinking of a few peripheral players getting a bit of action in the cup but that's a long way off.

A few points of business

So a few little pieces of administration to take care of.

First up Jordan Felgate managed to blag himself a UEFA B License course courtesy of the club. If it was up to me I wouldn't have forked out the money on him as I was planning on replacing him. As it stands he is still looking likely to be replaced but now I?ll have a look at his attributes when the course is done.
View attachment 430456

I noticed that the board were allowing me a head of youth development. I filtered out the candidates and was left with a four way dilemma.

As it happens my first two choices didn't want anything to do with the Club so a slight refinement of the filters and ended up with Ian Thomas-Moore. There was another candidate but I can't remember who he was and Ian was the way ahead. Especially as he's a former Stockport player and the most expensive signing in the Clubs history.
View attachment 430455View attachment 430454View attachment 430453View attachment 430452

I like the continuity feel to Thomas-Moore's appointment so I am very happy with him coming on board. His contract will run to the end of the year and in that time I will obviously assess where he is at and decide on going forward.

Stalybridge Celtic 2-2 Stockport County (Skrill North)

Another day another game. This would now be the second of three games away from home on the bounce.
View attachment 429542View attachment 429541

There were no changes in team selection with Craney and Mokes both still out injured, Verma and Lofthouse continued to deputise for them. I made one change to the bench, electing to give the embittered Jones a seat in place of Windsor.
View attachment 429540

Formations remained at 4-4-2 as again as previously stated I prefer teams to move around us not the other way around. Stalybridge deployed in a 4-4-1-1 presumably to drop a man into the hole and cause our defence some problems.
View attachment 429544

Before the game I told the players that I wanted them to pick up where they left off last time. Not a fantastic response so I fell back to the tried and tested I have faith speech. The men took to the field in a decent state.
View attachment 429543

We were starting on the front foot. The passing was looking a little slicker and we fashioned a wonderful chance after about five minutes. Numerous incisive passes pulled Stalybridge left and right before Dennis fired wide.
We still have that urge for early goals in our games and this game the opening goal came in the eleventh minute, which has been positively late on considering all the early strikes.

Unfortunately the goal came for Stalybridge. A corner from the right was intercepted just outside the six yard box by Lofthouse. He began to move the ball out the box and simply left it behind. Smith latched on to it and lashed it home unopposed. Strangely the performance indicator didn't give any error for the goal to Lofthouse.
I was looking for, again, a supercharged response. Again it came. The passing was slicker and simply better and Stalybridge were stretched in every direction.

We were awarded a free kick about twenty five yards out. Jevons stood over it and with the balls positioning and the players positioning I was expecting a shot to the far post. Instead Jevons went near post and thumped it. It was fortunate that the net was so sturdy otherwise Jevons may well be facing a manslaughter charge. It was a screamer. Watching the replay the ball was already in the goal before the keeper even moved at it.

Another perfect response. We threatened at this stage to sweep Stalybridge away. Gradually though as the half wore on chances, for both sides, evaporated.

At the break I told the players that they can still win and threw a few I have faiths in as well. Jevons was told that I was delighted with. And I was.
View attachment 429548

I elected to also partially unshackle the full backs by changing their status to automatic; leaving it to them to decide when then will push forward.

The second got sluggishly underway. The chances, for us anyway, dried up and what few efforts on goal were coming from Stalybridge.

We got to the hour mark and a moment of pure inspiration from Gosling who picked the ball up thirty yards out and drove past an ineffective challenge from O?Halloran cut inside Charnock and finished superbly at the near post.

We were staring down the barrel of the first defeat of the season. As the time began to move away from us orders and substitutions were issued to move us thought he gears.

Fifteen minutes after Gosling's goal we had made absolutely no head way into Stalybridge when all of a sudden we just exploded. We pressed and pushed and shoved relentlessly against Stalybridge and they began to creak. The longer time went on the louder they creaked. We went into injury time and I had regrets that if only we clicked into gear ten minutes earlier they we probably would have got something out the game.

At the death Howard gave the ball to Jevons midway into the Stalybridge half and ran on. Jevons slipped a fantastic straight ball which Howard ran onto and finished well at the near post. Stalybridge franticly complained it was offside and the replay showed quite conclusively that it wasn?t.

The streak goes on.

I told the men that they were unlucky today and I felt that was a fair assessment. Stalybridge put a very good rear guard action in the last period.

A concern for me is that despite the fact we have the best defence in the division the ratings of certain players are low. It?s frustrating that they are getting such low marks. They are doing a solid and unspectacular jobs but it's what I asked for. Jacobs though is sometimes gets pulled out of position and sometimes doesn't make the challenge but he is part of the best defence in the division.

The league table is still pleasent reading.
View attachment 429549

Next up is another away day this time to AFC Fylde in the FA Cup. I am contemplating giving some peripherals a chance and take the likes of Jacobs out of the firing line for a little while.

AFC Fylde 2-2 Stockport County (FA Cup with Budweiser 2nd Qualifying Round)

It's a little change of pace to get a run out in the FA Cup. Fylde are a division lower than us so I expect to get a result here.
View attachment 429524View attachment 429523

In terms of selection I opted to play the now fit Adriano Moke back in his position on the right of midfield. The impressive Lofthouse dropped to the bench and Bateman misses out. Turner retains his seat on the bench and I elected to not play Craney as he is in full training but his fitness levels have not returned yet.
View attachment 429525

Boring bit. 4-4-2. Teams move around us etc.
View attachment 429526

Fylde went 4-5-1 which would be a different system to face. I noticed that Fylde had picked up James Ogoo. In a previous FM incarnation I created a lower league database and was at Darlington in the Northern League Division One and signed him from Stockport Sports fresh from their triumph at Wembley in the FA Vase. He was a superb signing and if he is anything like he was in FM13 then they have one real decent player for the lower leagues.
View attachment 429522

Any takers on an early goal?

It was nice to see a different set of billboards for a change.

As it happens there was no early goal Fylde dominated the first ten minutes and after that we got a hold of the ball and began to exert some control. We created three passable chances and should really have been two up at least.

So it was a cliche that Fylde took the lead. A free kick foolishly given away by Fagbola about twenty five yards out. From my angle the wall didn?t look like it was too far across and Sunderland thumped it straight and true and straight in to the gap and in.

I was quite comfortable with the fact they had scored because I felt we could get a goal at some point. I knew there would be at least one more goal in this game and I was not very happy that it was Fylde that got it. Another free kick this time lumped into the six yard box and Hughes rose between two of our players and nodded home.

This would now really be a test to get back. I was furious. Actual real life palpable furious. At half time I had a walk away to get a bit of air and all I could think of was Graham Taylors's immortal half time team talk for Aston Villa against Crewe after coming into the break two do.

Taylor walks into the dressing room and says "You got us into this mess, you get us ******* out!" and subsequently walks out. Well said sir.

I issued eight new and change of orders which basically equated to go all out for it.
View attachment 429528

The players got the angry show me something else and believe me if there were an option to grab Jacobs by his face and ram it through the wall I would have took that.
View attachment 429527

Disappointingly for the first fifteen minutes of the second half there was no attacking intent. In fact Fylde were looking likely to get the next goal should there be one.

Dead on the hour and Howard played in Jevons on the edge of the area and his first touch gave himself the space and his second fired it home and we were back in the game. I had just issued a substitution order to replace Jevons with Turner. I quickly cancelled that.

Just like that we were active and alive and up for it and the attacking play began. We unleashed everything we had. Overload instruction and wingers pushed up as axillary strikers.

We battered then. Our goal changed the dynamics of the game and it was our attack against their defence.
Upon the eightieth minute they got a spell of possession and I felt that the game maybe had gone. I was frustrated because we battered them in the second half.

With the last minute looming Turner did some good work down the right and put a deep cross in which Lofthouse got a looping header on target. I was initially disappointed by it but the keeper pushed away as opposed to catching and Moke arrived at the back post to tap home.

Seat of the pants stuff.

The streak goes on.

Both full backs were poor and received a private chat which they both had the audacity to blame it on the midfield. Both were poor and will not be selected for the replay. O'Halloran out of principal and Jacobs because his average rating is so poor. Maybe this rest will give him some thinking time.

I had a choice to make for the team talk. Praise them are criticize. I went for the latter. I wasn't pleased that we had to come back from two down. The players didn't like it. So be it.

Post-game Turner was vocal in the criticizing of my postgame talk. He is already treading the line already.
We now face a replay on Tuesday which means Saturday?s games preparation will have to be adjusted.

We drew Histon in the 3rd qualifying round should we get there.

Stockport County 2-3 AFC Fylde (FA Cup with Budweiser 2nd Qualifying Round Replay)

After the euphoria of a last minute equaliser against Fylde we are handed a second chance to go through. We get an opportunity to start from scratch and not have to chase and with our bigger and ultimately more professional squad and home advantage we were looking to kick on and get this job done and make arrangements for Histon in the 3rd qualifying round.

There were a few changes made from the game on Saturday. Jamie Hand was suspended due to his booking and will miss out and will be replaced by Moses. Moses incidentally is a player I like and in an ideal scenario would like to give him a contract. He is currently on a non-contract deal at the moment.

Both full backs were dropped for this game. O'Halloran because he was very poor in the previous game and I genuinely annoyed by the performance. Jacobs was dropped because he was terrible in the first game and has been rating wise very poor. I personally feel he is better than his rating suggests. How can we have the best defence in the division but have three defensive players rated poor in ratings? Either way he has been doing the job on the most part that I've asked him to do.

Fagbola moved from the centre of the defence to the right back slot in place of Jacobs. Duxbury takes O'Hallorans place on the left. Tunnicliffe takes Fagbolas centre back slot.

I went as per usual 4-4-2. I wanted a solid performance and with Fylde likely to go 4-5-1 again it would give my wingers space to operate in and that was something I was keen to exploit.

I got amongst the players and told them that if they play their game then they will win. I went with the tried and tested I have faith to all the departments. Most of the players reacted very well.

The game began with us on the front foot. I would've expected it anyway. We kept the ball well and began to probe meaningfully at regular intervals.

After ten minutes or so Verma had a rasping shot from the edge of the area parried away by their keeper and Moke returned the ball in the form of a deep cross to the back post. Jevons, who had drifted from his marker, rose unchallenged to head the ball back across the goal and in. A fantastic start and the lead.

The next ten minutes was an exercise in stretching the opposition in every way. They couldn?t get the ball out of their half and if they managed to hack it away it was returned very quickly. This was a lot more like the Stockport County I've gotten used to.

After twenty seven minutes, they had been pulled, pushed and prodded relentlessly and with the rain falling it was having an effect on their players. They were slowing and tiring very quickly. A probe from Howard on the left saw the ball make its way to Jevons who had the composure to stand still with the ball and pick out the arriving Verma on the edge of the area and steer it home past the keeper.

2-0 coasting and clear. Tiring opposition. Players playing well. Everything going for us. This was now a foregone conclusion surely.

After thirty six minutes Fylde launched their first attack down the right. McCarthy dribbled down the wing and was not taken care of by Duxbury. A cross was pinged back but was pretty aimless but still found Sunderland at the edge of the area. He still had two of my defenders in the way but took to paces into the area and smashed home a bullet of an effort. They were back in it. Sunderland scored the hammer of a free kick in the first game so it wasn't a shock to see that strike come in.

The half wore one and I began to shape my half time team talk mentally and was reward for my foresight by a kick in the knackers.

Duxbury failed to police his winger up properly who had time to pick out Barnes at the far post who simply guided it past Ormson. A two nil lead evaporated just last that.

At the break I told the players that if we got the next goal it would do for us and the reaction was positive. The defensive unit received an additional I have faith just to keep their morale up.

The team talk had a wondrous effect as Fylde came out teeth bared and aiming for our throats. A succession of chances came and went as my defensive unit looked to try and allow Fylde a goal.

Three soft free kicks in a row saw Fylde nibble their way downfield like an American football team and after Charnock had another free kick given against him Fylde hammered the free kick in from about thirty yards out and it was like a thunderbolt and it crashed against the bar unfortunately straight to McCarthy who tapped it past the prone Ormson.

Somehow we had contrived to blow a two goal lead at home against lower league opposition whose fitness was rapidly dwindling.

I'd like to say we took the fight to them but alas we took the slightly more cowardly approach of non-committal attack where no one took the initiative and get some rounds down range. Fylde in fact looked more dangerous for the remainder of the half until the last ten minutes where I had committed to plan attack. All dice were thrown in all options pushed up and we managed to create two decent chances in the dying element of the game but unfortunately it was not to be and we crashed out of the cup.

I was very disappointed. No I was livid and the players were told that that was not good enough. They had the good grace to at least use that criticism as a motivational tool except Jevons but he was probably the stand out player so he could maybe feel a little aggrieved.

The next game takes us back to the league against Worcester City. We did have all week to prepare but this replay curtailed that so we will pick ourselves up and we will go again.

New Contract for Moke

Adriano Moke's contract reached its three month expiry point so I decided to offer him an extension to the end of the season.

The negotiations were tough since I have absolutely no budget to play with so I tried to barter him down from his initial start point.

In the end I managed to get him to his original wages but upped his appearance bonus. Thinking I done well not raising the wage bill I was shocked to discover that the wage bill had in fact gone up. I can only assume the elevated appearance bonus is taken into account.

The combined with a U21 game to trial a player could see the end of one maybe two or even three player's time at Stockport County. This is something I will deal with after the next fixture, which is against Worcester City. I have nine days to get in and make some decisions.
