Been playing as England and I'm in October 2016 right now! It's been a wild ride and dramatic things seem to happen at the right times - almost as if it would really happen in reality! Check it out:
England have had some cruel disappoints - continuing their torrid history. In the 2010 World Cup, they lost to hated rivals Argentina in the Quarter Finals. In a ridiculously close game, Argies squeaked to a 1-0 win and went onto win the World Cup that year - beating Spain 2-0 in the Final. England had walked through the group stages, destroying people by scoring tonnes of goals and conceding hardly any. Another disappointment for England.
Then in the 2012 European Championships came the closest of all England defeats! A legendary England side lost a heartbreaking Final to Italy after dominating the whole competition. They'd trashed teams in the group stage, then came through a classic duel with Spain in the Quarter Finals to win 1-0, then won a penalty shootout against Holland. Just as everyone thought the demons had finally been exercised they were beaten by Italy in the final!
England did, however, win the Confederations Cup in 2013, beating Brazil in the Final! John Terry resigned from the captaincy after the success. They had another classic showdown with Italy, beating them 2-1 in the Semi-Final to extract an amount of revenge for the previous year.
Next up was World Cup 2014. England again cruised through the tournament's group stages, wining all their games in convincing fashion (scored 18, only conceded 1). They overcame Holland 6-2 in the Second Round (the team they'd beaten two years ago in the Euro Championships semi-final). Then, in the Quarter Final they came up against old enemies Italy (the team who'd broken their hearts two years before in the Euros)! Again Italy got the better of England, besting them 5-4 in an all time classic! In the fallout from all the drama, Steven Gerrard resigned as England captain.
England entered the European Championships in 2016 with a strong young team and their eyes on the prize - led by lion-hearted captain Jordan Spence, the young Man Utd centre back, who is dubbed as the new John Terry. However, England ended up having one of their worst major tournaments for quite a few years. England got off to a disastrous start drawing 2-2 with Romania in the group stage. Next came a drubbing at the hands of arch nemisis Germany 4-2. England were pretty much written off for the tourament by this point. They had to beat a tough Czech Republic side (which they did 5-0) and rely on Germany beating Romania (which they did). England then met Spain in the Quarter Finals - another team they have bad blood with, as England had eliminated a favoured Spain side at the same stage four years earlier. This time, Spain bested England 1-0 and the Lions were sent crashing out of the tourament. Fans back home were obviously hugely disappointed as the side was expected to each at least the Semi-Finals by the FA. After the match, a crushed Steven Gerrard announced his retirement from interntional football. The interview is regarded as one of the most tear-jerking moments in what is now dubbed by the media as The Curse of England Football.
After the Euros, England continued their fall from grace and the rankings reflected that. For 2 and a half years, England had held the No. 1 position in the entire world. But from June 2015, England began a descent in status and in October 2016, they lie in 9th place. With a great new crop of super talented youngsters, though, many predict England's ressurrection is forecoming!
Some Interesting Player Stories
Michael Owen retired in 2013 from Fulham (they brought him in after his deal at Man Utd expired) and walked straight into the manager's job at Stoke. He's now manager of Sunderland.
David Beckham fell away into obscurity (in Football Manger terms) after retiring from the England national team.
Steven Gerrard retired from international football after the 2016 European Championships. He ended his career with 143 caps and 66 goals! 2016 was aslo the year he finally won the Premier League title with Liverpool, fulfilling his boyhood dream and ended his career on a high!
Alex Ferguson retired at the end of the 2012 season, the year Man City won their first Premier League title! It wouldn't be until 2015 that Man Utd would reclaim the Premier League - with Roberto Mancini as manager!
Arsene Wenger retired from football at the end of the 2015 season a day after winning the FA Cup with Arsenal for the last time. Hristo Stoichkov was brought in as the new manager.
Carlo Ancelotti is still manager of Chelsea, having led them to four Premier League titles!
Ryan Giggs has been on an interesting journey. He retired from football after the 2010/11 season with Man Utd. Ferguson was still manager at Utd then, and they knew Giggs needed more pedigree before gettin the Man Utd manager's job. So he went to Portsmouth to be their Youth Coach. After a year in that job, he was promoted to the full Portsmouth managers job in 2012 and has been their ever since - despite being relegated in 2012 (he'd only been in the job one month), then regaining promotion back to the Prem in 2013/14 and then being relegated again a year later!
Some More On Teams
Meanwhile, in Liverpool - Rafa Benitez lasted until 2014 after 10 years with the team! On the other hand, Tom Hicks left as chairman in 2013, which I find quite funny! They haven't had much luck with silverware - runners up in the FA Cup in 2010 is the most they've done. EDIT: They just won the 2015/16 Premier League title!
Due to this being FM2010, Man City start the game with Mark Hughes as manager. He's still manager and is responsible for one of the most sucessful runs in club history. They won the Premier League title in 2012, but were runners up in 2010-11 and 2015. They also won the FA Cup in 2013-14 and the League Cup in 2011-12 and 2015. Tevez has been their big star for many years, but they've had a lot of major players passing through their doors.
Stoke City have been on a wild ride. After winning the FA Cup in 2012 they then had mad periods with Tony Adams and then Michael Owen as manager! They now have Roy Hodgeson as manager who took them to the League Cup final in his first year in charge!
Around Europe
The European Champions League has been dominated by Real Madrid, who have built a real legendary dynasty winning the last four cups - 2012-15. Before that, Inter beat Real in the final in 2010 and then Juventus bested Inter in 2011. Nowadays, Real look untouchable in the Champions League and have barely lost in years!
Real have built up a legendary team built around Ronaldo and Kaka (who have pretty much shared around the World Player of the Year Award). Real brought in Cesc Fabregas at the start of the 2014/15 season - a move that no one expected! They had to pay Arsenal £59 million for the priviledge! He'd won World Player of the Year in 2012.
Lionel Messi's still with Barcelona and he's pretty much sworn allegiance to Barca for the rest of his career. He won World Player of the Year in 2011 and 2013.
--------------------
There's so much more and the game is ongoing, but this is just what I've typed up so far. It's fun playing as England and then tracking back through the seasons and seeing what's happened and what everyone's done!
If you have any questions about what particular teams or players are doing or have done, I'd be happy to have a look for you and report here!
Cheers!
