MAWER NAMED NEW OLDHAM MANAGER

After weeks of speculation Oldham Athletic announced their new manager today, a relative newcomer, Alex Mawer. Mawer, a lifelong Oldham fan, has no experience as a football league manager but spent 2 years with FC United overseeing two promotions in his time there. He said, ' it was an opportunity I couldn’t resist, obviously I hope that it wont be a too big a step up coming from non-league, but I can assure the fans that i have the clubs best interests at heart when I start to sign players and bring in my own backroom staff. Mawer takes over from previous manager Dave Penney who didn’t enjoy a good time at the club with the fans calling for his head after just 2 months in the job, various protests and online 'facebook' groups were made to try and get him sacked. Mawer went on further to comment on the previous manager ' I know Dave didn’t have a great time at the club but he is still a good manager, it just shows that not every job is easy but I will reiterate that i will do my very best for the club.' Whether Mawer will be able to bring success to the former premier-league club will be found out in the next few months. In other news rumours are circulating that Doncaster are interested in signing Chris Taylor, and are lining up a £1.2 million bid for the player, we will bring you more news of this in the next few days.

OLDHAM 0 - 0 STOCKPORT (R/L 0-0)
Man of the match: Jim Goodwin
(6791)

Oldham were kicking themselves after a goal-less draw with local rivals Stockport County. Missed chances for both teams left the fans slightly dis hearted as they left Boundary Park neither happy nor sad. Chris Dagnall missed a brilliant opportunity to make it 1-0 to the Latics just 2 minutes into the game, when he fired over the bar from 10 yards out. Ex Oldham defender Adam Griffin failed to hit the back of the net with a free kick from the edge of the box which fired of Darryl Flahavan's crossbar leaving the keeper stranded in no-mans land. Major summer signing Marlon Harewood also failed to make an impact on the game and this showed when he was substituted with 30 minutes to go. Alex Mawer seemed happy to get the first game of the season out of the way, he said ' The first game of the season is always the worst, you don't know what the other team will be like because you have no strong evidence to go off when picking a side to combat their threat. Both teams matched each other today and that showed in the result, any of the teams could of took the game with the amount of chances created.' Mawer then continued to say, 'On wards and Up wards from now we've got Morecambe in the week, which is a chance to test out a different strategy, and then a tough trip to Leyton Orient next Saturday' Latics have sold their allocation for the away trip to Morecambe so fans are advised that there are no tickets and you can't 'pay on the day' as you will be refused at the turnstile, Latics fans are also reminded that entering the home stand will result in being ejected from the stadium.

MORECAMBE 2 - 2 OLDHAM (5-4 PENS)
Man of the match : Deane Smalley
(2295)

Oldham manager was disappointed with his sides performance as they were unable to put the game to bed in 120 minutes, Mawer was even more annoyed at the fact that his side were knocked out of the cup by League 2 side Morecambe. Oldham were favorites going into the game but Morecambe took a surprise lead in the game through Paul Mullin, the ex Accrington man, putting the north-eastern side a goal up in the 21st minute, and it stayed like this until half time. It was after the half when the Latics really started to make an impact on the game, star striker Marlon Harewood putting the blues back on terms after 69 minutes. Oldham wasted many chances mainly through Harewood and Taylor, this left Oldham kicking themselves again when Michael Twiss put the home side back in front. The lead didn't last long though, when Chris Dagnall equalised for Oldham in added time, the Latics must of thought a win was on the cards, how wrong could they be? Extra time brought no drama, both sides playing out for penalties with many players suffering with cramp in the later stages, penalties were looming when Oldham were given a free kick on the edge of the area. Leon Britton stepped up to take the kick, the Morecambe fans behind the goal given him abuse and trying to put him off, and their efforts were paid off when he fired the kick over the stand and into the car park, Latics manager Alex Mawer looked fuming with Briton after missing a golden opportunity. The final whistle went and it was the ending no-body wanted, penalties. The first 2 kicks for both teams were converted, then up stepped Chris Taylor, he put the ball on the spot, walked back and then took his run up, only to scuff the ball after all his efforts, the ball not even going anywhere past the 6 yard box never mind the net. Morecambe went on to score all of their spot kicks and left Oldham out in the cold and out of the cup.

LEYTON ORIENT 1 - 2 OLDHAM (R/L 1-2)
Man of the match : Marlon Harewood
(5761)

Oldham fans were singing their hearts out at Brisbane Road when Marlon Harewood scored the winner in the 76th minute against Geraint William's side. Oldham, playing in their away strip of navy and tangerine started off the brighter of the two sides, producing many chances in the first 30 minutes even going a goal ahead through Harewood who got his first and second goals of the season in this game. It was a brilliant lay off from midfielder Danny Whitaker that lead to the goal, a wonder strike from 25 yards out, the ball kept rising and rising until the last second when it dropped nicely right in the top of the net, keeper Glenn Morris was shocked to see it fly right past him. Orient were back on terms ten minutes after the Athletic, a tap in after a good cross from Charlie Daniels, Darryl Flahavan came out to get the ball but was beaten to it by the orient striker who tucked it home with no problem. The first half finished 1-1 with Athletic being the dominant team. Into the second half and Paul Benson made his first appearance of the season coming of the bench to replace Pawel Abbott in the attack. This tactical substitution paid off mid-way through the half when Benson played a great ball into the box for Marlon Harewood to get his head to it and restore Oldham's one goal advantage, the Oldham fans were ecstatic and were chanting Alex Mawer's name as the league cup defeat in the week was definitely put behind them. Oldham manager Alex Mawer had this to say, 'We were absolutely outstanding today, Marlon chipped in with two great goals and now we've been lifted up to 5th in the table which is a great position to be in, if we are in the play-off laces coming towards the end of the season, i for one will be a happy man.'

MILLWALL 1 - 2 OLDHAM (R/L 2-1)
Man of the match : Chris Taylor
(14065)

The New Den played host to a brilliant game between Millwall and Oldham, and to add to the experience all fans were let in for cut prices in an initiative to get younger fans to the club, manager Kenny Jackett said 'the bumper crowd should have inspired the players to a win, but i dont know what went wrong, to be fair to Oldham they were they better team overall and deserved the win'. Oldham were ahead in the game after 17 minutes through an individual effort from man of the match Chris Taylor. Taylor was later stretchered off with a bad injury in the second half. Oldham were 2 up after 41 minutes, Darren Ward bringing striker Pawel Abbott down in the box, this resulted in the referee having no choice in pointing to the penalty spot. Who else but Marlon Harewood popped up to the take the penalty and cool as you like he slotted it home sending the keeper the wrong way. Oldham went in at half time with a two goal advantage but i dont know what manager Alex Mawer said to them because within 10 minutes Millwall had a goal back through Steve Morrison, who's shot luckily deflected past keeper Darryl Flahavan, who could do nothing to stop it going in. Oldham held out for the win and manager Alex Mawer had nothing but praise and concern for star player Chris Taylor who was taken off after 70 minutes. Mawer said "I hope that Chris' injury isn't bad and we will have him back as soon as possible, he is a vital player if we are going to be pushing for the automatic promotion places.' Oldham have now moved up to 4th in the table and are 2 points off the top spot, the fans chants of 'we are top of the league' maybe a little premature.

OLDHAM 0 - 1 SWINDON (R/L 2-2)
Man of the match : Dean Furman
(9094)

Oldham fans left Boundary Park disappointed after the Latics lost one-nil to a Swindon side manged by tactical mastermind Danny Wilson, many Oldham fans believe that Wilson should have been made Oldham manager a few season back but the club opted for Ronnie Moore, who was one of the most unpopular managers in the clubs history. Oldham never got into the game, creating few chances and being dominated by the robins. Athletic's best chance fell to Dean Furman when the ball dropped to him on the edge of the box after a corner he failed to capitalize as he fired the ball wide of the up-right. Swindon put Oldham to the sword at the end of the first half in time added on, when a corner was sent in to the back post where Scott Cuthbert was given a free header by the Oldham defence, there was no sign of who was marking him. The game need this way as the second half was mainly a midfield Battle with neither keeper seeing much of the ball. Alex Mawer gave us an interview after the game where he said, 'My players weren't up for it at all today, we didn't create many chances and as the old saying goes, if you dont put the ball in the back of the net 90% of the time you end up going on to lose the game.' Oldham fan reacted badly to this interview claiming the Oldham boss sounded to much like Dave Penney, telling the fans about not putting the ball in the net. On a lighter note, Midfielder Chris Taylor will be back in action in 3 weeks time after only mildly damaging his hamstring in the victory at Millwall.

Brentford 3 - 2 Oldham (R/L 1-1)
Man of the match: Marlon Harewood
(6763)

Titanic is just one way to sum up Oldham's defeat to Brentford at the weekend. Manager Alex Mawer was fuming when Brentfords' 3rd goal hit the back of the net, and he was sent from the touchline at kicking a water bottle in his anger. The game could have been so much better for Oldham if Andy Holdsworth, the Latics right back, had converted a penalty after 26 minutes. The build up to the penalty caused a few tantrums between Holdsworth and Marlon Harewood, who wanted to take the penalty, but Holdsworth claimed it after winning it just a minute earlier. The game got even worse for Oldham just 5 minutes later when Chris Morgan, the ex Sheffield United star, was sent off for a tackle on Brentford last man Carl Cort. The sending off resulted in a Brentford free kick but nothing came of the chance. Oldham started to improve though and on 36 minutes they hit the jackpot, another penalty when Andy Holdsworth was brought down for a second time in the game, this time though it would be Harewood who would step up to the plate, and step up to the plate he did converting the penalty with pin-point precision. The game got even better for the Latics when Harewood fired from outside of the box and the ball took a cheeky deflection off the defenders backside and into the bottom corner of the Brentford goal. The Oldham fans thought they were on the way to another win. It all started going wrong for Oldham just before the break when Carl Cort went on a great individual run from the half way line and Cooley converted past the Oldham keeper. The first half ended 2-1 to Oldham, surely they weren't going to throw it all away. The second half begun as the first ended, with another Brentford Goal, this time through Ryan Dickson, who put away a brilliant header from 12 yards out, two all, surely Brentford couldn't go on to win it, oh wait yes they could. The oldham defense stood still as they watched Toumani Diagouranga fire it past Darryl Flahavan into the top corner of the net, the Latics keeper set on the floor in amazement of how the game had turned out. As the final whistle sounded there were boo's from the Oldham end and chants of 'you dont know what your doing!', and watching that game i can confirm that they didn't Oldham Manager Alex Mawer was unavailable for interview after the game although Martin Gray quickly commented saying, 'I dont blame the fans for booing at the end of the game, we were awful and the players need to recognize that!'

OLDHAM 3 - 1 HARTLEPOOL (R/L 0-3)
Man of the match : Marlon Harewood
(5406)

Another win for manager Alex Mawer as Oldham move up to 7th in the league, just behind Charlton and Brighton. The game was quite entertaining for the low crowd at Boundary Park with Oldham striker Marlon Harewood running the Hartlepool defense ragged, Harewood is proving to be signing of the summer for Oldham as he has bagged 6 goals in league one already this season. It was Harewoods fellow strike partner, Chris Dagnall who put the ball in back of the net after just 15 minutes with a simple tap in after a great move from Dean Furman, the Oldham midfielder currently filling in for Chris Taylor on the right flank. Oldham went into the break with a one goal lead and increased it just after with a brilliant strike from who else, Marlon Harewood, he hit the ball past the keep with a shot that came of the out side of his football and curled into the bottom left of the goal, Magnificent was the world Alex Mawer used to describe it after the game. Jeff Stelling wouldn't have been happy with his sides performance at this point until James Brown got a goal back for Hartlepool after 72 minutes, he went through one on one with the keeper and slotted the ball into the back of the net, only to be booked for 'over-celebrating' when he went over to the Oldham fans with his hand to his ear. Brown was soon silenced when he brought down Oldham player Leon Britton in the box, PENALTY. Britton stepped up to take it and fired it high into the top of the goal, it was now Brittons turn to be booked for over-celebrating, this time for jumping into the crowd of Oldham supporters in the Chadderton Road End. Game over and another 3 points for Oldham who are trying to sneak into the play-off spots, but there is still a long way to go in this season.

BRISTOL ROVERS 2 - 0 OLDHAM
Man of the match : Gary Doherty
(6291)

Oldham were distraught at the Memorial Ground as they were well and truly battered by Rovers. The Pirates were outstanding according to boss Paul Trollope, who was involved in a clash of words with opposition manager Alex Mawer after an alleged handball in the build up to Rovers second goal. Mawer after the game blasted the referee saying ' it was such a clear handball i cant believe he missed it.' Mawer went on a joked saying 'I'm going to give him my glasses next time we have him, might make him see something'. This lead to the FA quickly issuing a statement that they would be reviewing Mawer's comments. Both goals were from corners in this game with defender and club captain Sean Gregan being at fault for both of them, and that is an unusual statement for me to make.

OLDHAM 4 - 1 CARLISLE (R/L 2-0)
Man of the match: Danny Whitaker
(6249)

Oldham have wracked up 13 points so far this season out of a maximum of 24 possible, but this still leaves them in 11th place. But the performance of the side at Boundary Park sure boosted their promotion push as they scored 4 goals against a Carlisle side that contained players such as Graham Kavanagh and Ian Harte. The game got off to a slow start but things soon picked up just before the wnd of the half with a great individual effort from Oldham's Chris Dagnall, the ex Rochdale striker taking it upon himself to run all the way up the pitch and then craftily chip the Carlise keeper from outside of the box. This meant that the Latics took a deserved lead into the half time break. Whatever Mawer said at the interval sure boosted the sides confidence as they went on to score another within ten minutes of the re-start when Danny Whitaker hit a hard, low shot right into the bottom corner of the net, the keeper had no chance. Another goal came quickly after, Marlon Harewood this time heading in at the front post, the Oldham fans were certainly enjoying this sunny day at Boundary Park. Danny Whitaker chipped in with another goal just before the end, this time breaking the offside trap to gently put the ball past the keeper into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal. Carlisle did get a conciliation though with 2 minutes left Richard Offlong rounding off the afternoon with a simple goal, no clean sheet for the Athletic Keeper.

SOUTHEND 4 - 1 OLDHAM (R/L 0-1)
Man of the match: Chris Taylor
(8840)

The Oldham players were distraught at Roots Hall after a crushing defeat to Southend. The afternoon started as it was going to go on when Gary Alexander put Southend ahead after 13 minutes, a great individual strike from just inside the box. The afternoon got seemingly worse just 5 minutes later when ex Norwich defender Gary Doherty tripped Dougie Freedman when he was in on goal, Red Card and Doherty left the field red faced as Oldham manager Alex Mawer wouldn't give him the light of day. This is how the game stayed until the second half when The ex-Oldham midfielder Anthony Grant chipped the keeper from 30 yards out, its a shame he never did that when he was at Athletic. Oldham thought they were going to get back into the game when star player Marlon Harewood slotted the ball in the back of the net from two yards out, Harewoods motto is 'it doesnt matter how they go in, as long as they go in.' This goal living up to that motto. Gary Alexander's afternoon ggot alot better when he scored his second and third of the afternoon in the space of 10 minutes, the veteran striker firing in from outside of the box. Oldham distraught but Southend march on up the league.

OLDHAM 1 - 1 MK DONS (R/L 2-1)
Man of the match: Danny Whitaker
(5923)

Oldham were seemingly happy with their point against the MK Dons, although the Dons are struggling to pick up points at this early stage in the season. Danny Whitaker scored the first goal in the game after just 15 minutes with a great volley from an impossible angle, the ball just fired into the top right hand corner of the net past goalkeeper, Daniel Glass, the 18-year-old youngster not having the best of starts to the game. The game stayed at 1-0 until 60 minutes gone when from nothing Aaron Wilbraham put the ball in the back of the net, the former oldham striker broke away from the defenders when captain Sean Gregan mis-placed a back-pass and played Wilbraham through on goal. Manger Alex Mawer said 'it was a silly pass to take from Sean, and he knows he's done wrong but hey were all human and we all make mistakes.

OLDHAM 3 - 0 YEOVIL (R/L 0-0)
Man of the match: Paul Benson
(5581)

October has started well for Oldham, a 3-0 win over Yeovil starting off the month in style. The home form of Oldham is unquestionable but away form is letting them down. Marlon Harewood easily stood out again in this game with two goals, the first of which coming after 3 minutes, brilliant play by defender Chris Morgan to find Harewood over the Yeovil defense, put him through on goal and as cool as you like he slotted the ball up high in the net and ran over and celebrated with the Oldham fans, that was the players 10th goal of the season, and ninth in the league, although he didn't have to wait long for his 10th. Just 7 minutes later to be exact, some bad defending from Yeovil left him clean through on goal, in the same place as the first goal, and again it was the same result, high into the net and the Yeovil keeper was frustrated with his defense. Half-time looming and a bad tackle on striker Chris Dagnall meant that he limped of the pitch and straight up the Boundary Park tunnel seeking some treatment. This meant that Paul Benson could come on for the seconds that remained in the first half. Benson made his impact in the second half though when he climbed higher than the popular ex-Oldham defender Stefan Stam, to head the ball straight into the middle of the net, god only knows where the keeper was at this point. Manager Alex Mawer said after the game, 'it was a brilliant performance from my lads, a great team effort, all we need to do now is get it right in the away games and we could be looking at a play-off place at the end of the season if we stay consistent'. Oldham are only 2 points away from 6th place even though they sit in 13th place at the present time, this just shows how close this battle is.
