Nacional da Madeira - Portuguese Power

Our first big domestic clash ended in a surprising 3-0 victory over Sporting. I have struggled to beat them since taking over at Nacional, having won only 2 out of 13 meetings prior to this. So to secure a victory with such an emphatic scoreline is a massive step for us (even if it was rather flattering).

We then kicked off our Champions League campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over PSV. This is our first ever win in the group stages and gets us off to a really good start as we look to at least finish Top 3 in our group.

We then picked up a couple of wins in the League, as well as a loss in our League Cup group. I fielded a second string starting XI, but we really should have done better in the game.

We then hosted Italian Giants, Inter Milan, who finished 2nd in Serie A last season. They still have the firepower of Lukaku up front so to secure a clean sheet is a really good achievement for us and a really good point.

A couple of domestic cup competition wins for us, which again featured a mostly reserve/youth side as I rested some of the senior players.

Screenshot 2021-06-28 at 17.39.58.jpg

We then had the long trip to Ukraine, where we once again showed our defensive prowess, and secured another valuable point. We did dominate the game so maybe we should have gone for the win, but I was happy with the result and leaves us well set at the halfway stage.

So we are currently unbeaten and sit 2 points behind Inter Milan. Our next game will be at home to Shaktar and a victory in that game will guarantee us 3rd place and knockout football. However, I think we have a really good chance still of finishing in the Top 2 and progression in the CL, which will bring in some massive revenue for us.

A couple more routine victories in the League followed...

Before we suffered our first defeat of the season in the League, to reigning champions Porto. We were away from home so was always going to be tricky but they made it look very comfortable even with 10 men for the remaining 30 minutes.

Despite losing to Porto we are ahead of them by 2 points. We cannot afford to slip up against the smaller Portuguese sides this season and hopefully we can take that next step and win the title this season.

Nacional are in first place well keep this up dude

We arguably had our best performance of the season against an experienced Shaktar side. We bullied them from the first whistle and they can be very lucky the scoreline was only 2-0, on another day it could have been 4 or 5!

We then had a couple of domestic fixtures as we disappointingly dropped 2 points against Vit. Guimaraes

Screenshot 2021-06-30 at 10.29.45.jpg

We then secured our place in the knockout stages of the CL with a draw against PSV! I knew we only needed a point to secure a Top 2 finish and even though they picked up 2 red cards I decided not to go all out for the win (even though we still had plenty of chances to win the game)

Another 2 points dropped at home in the League as we look to hang on to our top spot.

It was then a showdown with Inter Milan for top seed in our CL group - We came into the game 2 points behind them, so needed a win!

We managed to fight back from going 2 goals down and were actually leading the game 3-2 until an 87th minute equaliser from André Silva. It was an incredible performance against the odds and in usual circumstances this would have been an incredible result, it's just a shame that we really needed the win in this case.

So here is the final group standing, as we managed to go unbeaten in all 6 games.

Screenshot 2021-07-03 at 10.05.34.jpg

So our reward for qualifying for the knockout stages is a tie against Liverpool....

Screenshot 2021-07-03 at 10.18.31.jpg

They are currently leading the Premier League and have a squad brimming with talent.... We will need a miracle!

We then rounded off 2024 in fairly decent fashion, which included a PT Cup 5th Round victory over Porto.

Screenshot 2021-07-03 at 22.21.47.jpg

Although we have lost our top spot to Porto as they look to retain the title. Somehow Sporting have played 5 games less than us so far this season and should they win all those games in hand would actually go top. I still have no idea how that happens considering we are also playing in Europe and all domestic competitions...

Screenshot 2021-07-03 at 12.49.54.jpg

We also failed to progress from our League Cup Group. I do play a completely rotated side for this competition, but is still a bit disappointing to lose out on the chance of winning silverware.

With the transfer window open I do have money to spend and my eye on a couple of players, but unfortunately the asking prices are still too high. Hopefully I can negotiate them down throughout the month.
