Need Help installing the Steam

Hi Guys,
I have just installed the demo strawberry version of the fm 2011 and when I try to install steam from steam.exe it says updating and then it shows me an error saying that "error- to run this, you must first be connected to the internet" even thou i am connected to the internet..
please some1 help me with it :'(
can fm 2011 demo run without using steam?

I have also checked that the firewall is not blocking my prog but it still wont run

it's been doing that to me for the last 24 hours on my mac, but the problem is the internet connection that I am using, won't let me use MSN ever either. it's not your computer, it's the internet. possibly your router settings blocking it or something. sorry not to be able to solve it, but you're not the only person in that particular boat. I'm waiting til lunch time to get the vanilla direct download. Steam is nothing but trouble.
