Need help to a 4-2-3-1 Wide formation!

Introduciton

Hello, I'm currently playing as AGF in the danish 1st Division(Superligaen) and I'm doing alright, but I've had a few lucky victories. Whenever I lose I tend to get smashed (0-3 etc.) I really like playing with a AM, but I haven't had much luck in having both wingers and AM playing above the 7. rating. It's usually very inconsistent performances.

What I'd like to get tips on

Mainly my team instructions as that's what I change up the most. Also perhaps formation wise, I don't know whetever I should put my wingers on Attack or support and in which case I should have my AM at attack or support. My currently best striker is a Targetman so not able to change him as I'm on a very low budget.
Also my individual instructions I'd really like to get some tips on!

What I'd like from my teams
I want to play possession football who's able to create loads of chances, I wan't my strong attacking players to get loads of goals and assists. (heh)

I'm gonna get new and better players. I just want to get the formation done before buying any new players.

1. In my opinion, Targetman is not advisable to use in a possession based style. Try a DLF on atttack duty maybe? ( Other players are encouraged to play long balls to the targetman, so if the targetman is not able to get on the end of these long balls, you are going to struggle with the possession based style.)

2. You have wingers on both wings set to attack. Which makes your attack a bit one dimensioned. If the opposition play tall strong CBs with good heading, you are going to struggle. I would recommend using one inside forward, as this will go well with your TI of 'Work Ball Into Box'. Currently, no one is making regular runs into the box for the targetman to play them through.

3. The AP on support is not a good selection in my opinion. This is because a lot of passes will be played to the targetman who will drop deep due to the support duty. From there the targetman is basically doing the same as the AP would have been doing. (The targetman will need players rushing into the box so can play them through. The AP on support duty will not do that.)

Appreciate your reply! I have felt like the targetman has ruined it a bit. I'm looking to buy an advanced forward. Would you then still recommend AP on attack? And an inside forward?

I think a shadow striker or an AM on attack duty or an AP on attack duty can all work. I wouldn't recommend an inside forward though as no one will be feeding balls through to him and the player will largely be then reduced to taking long shots. (Unless this is what you want.)

If you want to play a crossing game(as your roles suggest)and still want to keep the AM, then I think its better to use a 4-4-1-1 rather than the 4-2-3-1.

You want to play a crossing game right?
So for that you got to have a winger.
If you want both wide players to be wingers, then i dont think an AP on attack is a good choice. If you want only one wide player to be a winger then you can use ab AP and set the other wide player any role that you think works well with your formation. (Maybe you have a good Ramdeuter in your squad?) I wouldnt completely rule out the inside forward but that would mean less crosses. Thats why i suggested you use 4-4-1-1 rather than 4-2-3-1.

Very fluid style mixed with specialist roles, and on top of that the reason you get smashed is lack of defence, you don't have a holding role in mid, sur DLP holds a bit, but him and BWM are easy to bypass, theory of 4231 is that MC holds opposition so you can transform from att to def while it uses FB players to add to width in atack, I would suggest either using IWB to cover for more supportive MC roles like B2B and CMd or using FB A in pairing with Wingers on Support duty, as for forward player DLF S can be made into mobile target man and paired to great extent with AM on attacking duty, vice versa AM support can be made into a pivotal playmakerish role while DLF on attack can be used as focal point of attacks, still you would lack variety in attack, Iwould suggest using IF S on one side and Winger on other....
