I've been a reader of these story threads for a while, but have only just signed up, so figured I should create my own story based on my current game with Newcastle. Due to some incredible luck in signings in my second season, I've decided to start my story with the fight for premiership survival as promotion from the championship is a bit clichéd, unfortunately I got carried away and didn't leave a saved game in the previous season, so the screen shots I have of the previous season are limited.

Season 09/10

Kieran Tomlinson's Newcastle finished as clear winners after attaining 104 points and scoring a total of 90 goals. The fans player of the year was Jonas, scoring 19 goals and having 15 assists in 46 games played. The favoured strike pairing were Andy Carroll who scored 24 in 44 appearances, and Henri Camara who scored 22 in 41 apps.

07.07.2009 Kieran Tomlinson hired as Manager.
25.08.2009 Chairman Mike Ashley leave.
25.08.2009 New Chairman Ross Knowles takes over (Promotion from Within).
05.04.2010 Promoted from Coca-Cola Championship.
10.04.2010 Coca-Cola Championship Champions.

Season Summary.

  • Approximately 4 million was made available to Kieran Tomlinson, following a request for more transfer funds from the new chairman Ross Knowles.
  • Nicky **** agreed to Mutually terminate his contract after being removed as Newcastle captain and not being involved in first team plans. (Wage: £50,000 p/w)

I will be following this. Anything you need help with?

I may need a bit of advice once I've fully updated the thread. I'm just at the end of October in game, so will just be doing write ups of my Transfers and games so far before continuing with the game. May need a bit of advice come January, as I'm planning to try to offload some more deadwood that I couldn't shift in the summer and will need pointers on where to strengthen.

Pre-Season: (Assistant Manager)

1 - 1 FC Bayern - Lovenkrands
1 - 1 Tottenham - Shola Ameobi
0 - 2 Arsenal
0 - 1 Everton
1 - 3 Man City - Neil Mellor
2 - 1 Rangers - Fabio Zamblera, Shola Ameobi
1 - 1 Juventus - Jelle Van Damme
1 - 2 Sevilla - Xisco
1 - 1 Inter - Ryan Donaldson
2 - 1 AC Milan - Steven Taylor, Vagner Love
0 - 1 Celtic

Kieran Tomlinson has told the Newcastle board that they can expect a Mid-Table Finish.
As a Result the transfer budget has been set to 23.5m and a wage budget of 850k per week.

Transfers:
View attachment 25065

Nicolas Burdisso: Central defender of the same quality as Colloccini, he had rejected contract extensions from Inter over wage disputes. We were able to sign him at the end of his contract, offering him wages of £36,000 per week on a 2 year deal.

Cristian Ansaldi: It took a fair amount to get Porto to part with this lad, he was signed to strengthen the right back area of my squad where my previous best player was Lauren. He's a really diverse player and at 24 he's got plenty of years left in him, and he's being paid a paltry £22,500 per week which more than makes up for his pricetag.

Guillermo Ochoa: Following a few failed attempts to get Given to return to Newcastle, I went for this lad, he is an amazing keeper, and at 25 for a keeper he has 8 or so years left. I had to throw around a lot of praise for him and his manager before managing to get him for 7.5m. The fans weren't too happy at the pricetag and labelled it as a waste of money, but they are warming to him now. And at £19,750 p/w, I'm paying less than the 30k I was paying Harper.

Vagner Love: An awesome striker, and a hefty 10m price tag to match, he's one of the few that would come to a team not in the champions league, so he was a no-brainer signing. I was able to haggle him down to £30,000 p/w which is less than the likes of Xisco and Alan Smith. My original plan was to play Love as a lone striker and sign Deco from Chelsea (valued at 1.7m) to support this guy as one of 2 AMC's, but Chelsea weren't willing to part with him.

  • The rumoured financial difficulty at the club following this signing led to my players being willing to sign new contracts at a fraction of their old wages. I handed out a lot in signing on fees, but was able to get players like Coloccini down from 78k to 33k and Barton from 75k to 41k. The highest earning player is now Alam Smith at 50k p/w who I will be getting rid of in January.

Out: Jonas Guttierez: When Roma came sniffing, I put a 10m price tag on him. Following his performances in the championship and his unrealistic goal scoring run I wasn't going to let him go easily. I couldn't turn down offers of 9m for him, as he was only rated 3*'s in the Premiership. So I let him go and signed his replacement (below), although he was fans player last season, selling him for that price was surprisingly a really popular choice, I guess he must have played poorly in pre-season.

Angel Di Maria: Signed for 3.5m from Benefica, this guy is slightly better than Jonas for a vastly reduced price. At 22 he has plenty of years left in him, but he may be one of the ones I replace next year, should I get a similar budget to this years. At £40,000 per week I probably could have haggled him down, but it's still better than the 55k I was paying Gutierrez.

Hulk: I literally almost wet myself at the prospect of signing this guy. I had been told about him by a friend and had him on my shortlist indefinitely from day 1. I had made a few cheeky bids in the championship and previously in the window, having bids of 7.5m accepted, but he wanted champions league football. I had written him off, when he handed in a transfer request to Porto, apparently he was dissatisfied with the management and wanted to move on. At 3.9m he was a steal, so I gave him a 2m signing on fee to make sure he chose Newcastle over the other 19 clubs racing for his signature. I'm paying £44,500 for week which is a paltry wage for a player of his stature (less than half what we were paying Michael Owen), so I'll probably have to increase that later on to keep him. Really couldn't believe my luck on this one, had to change my tactics a bit as I already signed Love, so I went for 2 Strikers and then wanted an AMC and DMC.

Out: Scott McDonald: Decent player (3 stars), but nothing on Love and Hulk, he got me a few goals last season and his mark up fell just short of what I paid him. Also freed up 20k per week.

Out: Peter Lovenkrands: Not a good enough player, I let him go on a free to save the 18k per week I was paying him.

Estaban Granero: I had about 7 million to spend on 2 players, less their wages, so I decided to go for loan deals. This guy seemed a bit pricey at 3m upfront, but I was able to get a future fee of 4m, he looked a class player, so I went for it, and I will definitely be signing him permanently as soon as I can afford it. He's a great passer, and creates lots of goals for Hulk and Love.

Andrea Poli: This guy was good in '09 so I decided to bring him in on a loan deal to fill the hole in DMC (I previously wanted Veloso, but he went to Real Madrid in the first season). Poli has a low star rating compared to the rest of my team (1 1/2 stars), but his passing attributes are insane, he creates a lot of great passes for my players to run onto (Fastest team in the premiership). I'm paying this guy £3,000 per week for the duration of the loan, so at a 1m initial fee he seems like a good deal, I can also get him for 6m on a future fee if i am unable to sign Veloso next summer.

Mid-table is a bit optimistic isnt it?

Good luck anyway, I'll follow!

3 - 1 Everton - Steven Taylor, Esteban Granero, Vagner Love
3 - 2 Chelsea - Steven Taylor, Vagner Love (2)

2 - 1 Tottenham - Vagner Love, Esteban Granero
The team fought back from an early Robbie Keane goal, coming out firing on all cylinders after half time, with Love scoring on 46 mins and Granero putting the team infront after 56mins.

2 - 2 Man City Hulk, Esteban Granero
A well fought match, which we deserved to win, Hulk put Newcastle ahead before Poli gave away a penalty which allowed tevez to bring his team back into the running, Poli made up for his mistake by playing a lovely ball through to Granero, leaving him in miles of space which he utilised to the full finishing with a lob of the keeper. Goal of the month in my opinion. Steven Taylor then tripped Tevez in the 5th minute of added time (4mins added :@) gifting him another penalty which he struck in exactly the same place to bring his team back level with the last kick of the game.

October Awards:
Manager of the Month
Player of the Month - Estaban Granero
Young player of the Month - Andrea Poli
Goal of the Month - Vagner Love (vs Chelsea)

Thanks for following guys, I think I should be able to achieve mid-table minimum, depends on how I play the rest of the top teams, personally I want a top 6 finish :D

November

1 - 3 Hull - Estaban Granero
Newcastle were caught napping, as they conceded 3 goals in the first 15 minutes of the game. Steven Taylor gave away a free kick just outside the area in the 3rd minute which was converted by Bullard, and it went downhill from there with a brace from Matt Derbyshire, the first of which looked offside. Newcastle then dominated the game despite poor performances across the field, and were able to get a single consolation goal on 76 minutes. Newcastle manager, Kieran Tomlinson blasted the referee in the post-match press conference for letting the goal stand, a matter which the FA have remained silent on.

1 - 0 Stoke - Vagner Love
Newcastle were tipped to win the game, and tried to dictate play. However it was quite an open game with numerous chances being squandered at both ends. Newcastle's Vagner Love was able to break the deadlock shortly after Stoke had been reduced to 10 men. Hulk was unlucky a few minutes later when his shot bounced off the post.

Injury: Nicholas Burdisso suffered a broken toe during the match, putting him out of action for at least 7 weeks.

2 - 1 Blackburn - Jouko Myllynen, Hulk
Hulk created a goal for Myllynen on 23 minutes, when he broke away with a great run down the wing, before drilling a cross to the far post. Blackburn's Benni McCarthy scored a scorcher on 70 minutes which was ruled out for offside, but 5 minutes later he was able to capitalise on a poor first touch by Newcastle keeper Ochoa. The game was then put out of Blackburn's reach when Myllynen returned the favour to Hulk, blasting a ball from his own penalty area half way into the opposition half, which Hulk was able to run on to and slot home.

Injury: Guillermo Ochoa out for 4 weeks with a twisted ankle
Injury: Andrea Poli suffering from a virus, will miss the next two games

2 - 1 Arsenal - Vagner Love, Jouko Myllynen
Vagner Love kicked off the scoring on 10 minutes with a whopper of a goal, powered 20 yards into the corner of the goal. On 30 minutes, Jouko Myllynen was able to get his head on the end of a floated cross from Di Maria to put Newcastle two goals infront. Arsenal's Merida was able to grab a consolation goal on 77 minutes, but it wasn't enough to stop a dominant Newcastle side taking all 3 points.

Impressive squad, but here is what I would do:

need DM. Look at Gago, Hedwiges Maduro, Jonathan Santana and Toulalan, or Ettienne Capoue.

AM - I suggest vdVaart, Gourcuff, as Deco is a little old....

I'd go for Van Der Vart also he has been very impressive for my West Ham team :)

Thanks for the advice guys, I've been really stuck on the DMC position, have had a look at some of the suggestions and made a few offers. I'm also looking at Miguel Veloso for there.

VdVaart has been listed for a few seasons now at around 9m, but he seems a little old still, Deco was backup for the last season, I'm hoping to get someone a bit more long term. I'm trying to get Granero on another season long loan with future fee, as I couldnt get him to agree terms before. Also looking at Sessegnon and Afellay.
