PARDEW BACKS BOYS TO THRIVE
Toon boss thinks his troops can repeat last season's successes
Alan Pardew believes his Newcastle side can once again finish in the Champions League places while making an impact in this year's competition.
Speaking to the Journal, Pardew said: "Last season we were terrific and the pressure is on to do it again.
"We've added two players with Champions League experience and quality in Douglas and (Loic) Remy. And that gives us belief that we can match last season."
United open their league season against Liverpool on August 16th while their Champions League opponents will be revealed during the Group Stage Draw on the 28th.
NEWCASTLE SQUAD:
GOALKEEPERS
1 Tim Krul - Undisputed number 1
13 Jak Alnwick - Back up keeper. needs to step up after Harper's retirement.
DEFENDERS
2 Fabricio Coloccini - Captain and leader. Will be key again.
3 Davide Santon - First choice left-back. Getting better each season.
6 Yohan Benalouane - Fourth choice centre-back. Will get opportunities mainly in the cups.
12 Mathieu Debuchy - First choice right-back. Great defensively and attacking.
15 Douglas - Will battle Steven Taylor to start alongside Coloccini.
19 James Tavernier - Backup at best. Flexible and can play anywhere at the back.
27 Steven Taylor - Quality last term but will have to fight for his place now.
33 Curtis Good - Back up and available for the reserves.
44 Remie Streete - Loaned to Cardiff.
MIDFIELDERS
4 Yohan Cabaye - Automatic starter. Key to how the team play.
5 Moussa Sissoko - Powerhouse given license to roam in midfield three.
7 Thomas Ince - Pushing to start but needs to add goals and assists to his game.
8 Vurnon Anita - Behind Cabaye, Sissoko and Tiote but more than capable of stepping in.
10 Hatem Ben Arfa - Playmaker in chief. Scored 10 with 13 assists last term.
14 Abdelhakim Omrani - Back up playmaker who will be used in the cups.
18 Jonas Gutierrez - Inconsistant last season and has to fight for his place.
20 Gael Bigirimana - Young backup who will feature in the cups and on the bench.
24 Cheik Tiote - Best defensive midfielder at the club.
29 Haris Vuckic - Started last season well but injury restricted him. Back-up this year.
31 Shane Ferguson - Used mainly as an impact sub either left-back or wing.
39 Mehdi Abeid - Loaned to Rennes
FORWARDS
9 Papiss Demba Cisse - 33 goal hero last season. Thrived in the lone role.
11 Andy Carroll - Mixed season last year and is second fiddle to Cisse.
21 Loic Remy - Quality signing who may be used out wide more often than up top.
22 Anthony Koura - Back up forward who is available for the reserves too.
28 Sammy Ameobi - Impact sub who needs to score more goals
49 Adam Campbell - Loaned to Cardiff.
