A dismal month. We were very close to getting points in the first 3 games, but our poor run of form and lowered morale meant Lewandowski had a ball at the end of the month to extend his lead.

Diouf having a huge dip in form, failing to get into the right positions to score. Our defence didn't fair too well either. A late comeback was on the cards against Gladbach but we conceded with only minutes left on the clock. Took an early lead against Hannover to then concede 3 before Calhanoglu pegged one back but it was too little late. Another early lead through a beautiful run down the wing by Diekmeier against Leverkusen but we were unable to hold them off.

View attachment 360554

Dropped from 4th to 9th and fell 6 points short of Braunschweig. Oh well, these things happen, and it sort of balanced out the great run of form we'd been in. We have a fairly easy run into the final few games of the season though, so hopefully the players would lift.

Nothing too exciting to report, as Mandu passes Diouf on the goalscoring charts.

Although not a great month, we finally won, albeit against cellar-dwellers Hoffenheim and coming back from 2-0 down at half time. Augsburg and Freibeurg were always going to be tough games with the low morale we were carrying, and I'm not too disappointed with the results as the other teams in the top half of the table also struggled. A draw against Frankfurt away from home is a good result considering the circumstances.

View attachment 360549

We drop to 10th but all the top half teams having a stinker month meant the gap between us and Braunschweig in 4th was reduced to 5 points.

Jansen put in a lot of work on the field, both on and off the ball. Although I felt Calhanoglu also played well, he wasn't at his best when we needed him the most against Augsburg and Freiburg. Jansen's really helped us in defence and in attack, having one of the highest tackles per game ratio in the league.

We finish off the campaign on an extremely positive note. Goals galore at the start of the month. I was really pleased with the teams spirit against Mainz who finished the season in 3rd, Diouf broke his goal drought with a brace. Hakan Calhanoglu returned to his best with a brace also, and a goal in the convincing win over Stuttgart. Always nice to end the season with a clean sheet.

HSV receive 29.39M for finishing 7th

What a great season for Mainz and Nurnberg, both qualifying the Champions League. Schalke won the German Cup, which meant I was given the Europa League Third Round Play-Off Qualification place. I wasn't expecting to finish in the top 6, so I'm very pleased with 7th, especially considering we only lost out to Schalke by a difference of 2 goals. We were also equal 3rd highest scoring team in the league, which is promising.

HSV Qualify for the Europa League

Need to fix up the defence for the coming season while maintaining our pressure going forward and we could be looking at Champions League football. Can't complain for a lack of wins, as a lot of the teams above and below us also suffered the same problem. Just goes to show how competitive the Bundesliga is.

View attachment 360543

Hakan's late charge up the assist sheets ends one short of the top. Diouf finishes in 3rd on the goalscorer charts with 17. 12 of those in the 2nd half of the season with us, really hoping to hold onto him. Great defensive stats also for Jonathan Tah, who ends the season as our highest rated defender, and he's only 18!

We've already stated how great Hakan has been throughout the season, but Jonathan Tah at the age of 18 has come a long way over the course of the season, and really acted as the defensive linch-pin in the 2nd half of the season, with Djourou losing form. He also topped the stats sheet for 'Interceptions' and 'Key Tackles'. Really promising young stars, and I'll definitely be holding onto them.

Benitez takes over at Bayern Munchen

Following the World Cup, there were a lot of changes made to both international and domestic squads. Vicente del Bosque resigned as Spain's manager after a poor performance at Brazil, which meant Guardiola left Munich to take over the vacancy. The Bavarian's brought in his Spanish compatriot, Rafael Benitez.

View attachment 360529

A few contracts came to an end, and our cover 'keeper from last season retired. I originally brought Stephen Ireland in on a loan as cover, but terminated when we got the youngster from Inter, Marco Benassi for the season.
View attachment 360528

Tom Ince:
Was available for free, and didn't ask for huge wages. We didn't have any natural Left Winger's in the squad with Ola John's loan running out, and I wanted to bring in someone permanent. Tom already has a lot of quality, having played in England, and I'm expecting big things from him, having already done really well in his first few games.

View attachment 360527

Giuseppe Bellusci: Also available on a free. Although Arsenal accepted a 1M bid for Djourou, we didn't see eye to eye on his contract, with Djourou wanting too much. Bellusci seemed like the perfect fit. Still quite young and has his best years ahead of him. Also has a lot of experience in the Serie A, which is where you want to pick your CB's up from.

Other transfers were made for cover. Propper looks to be a promising attacking mid, and Coates is a good experienced cover option for CB. Very strong and well built. Torosidis was brought in as an experienced right back on the cheap, to give some depth as we will be playing in Europe this season.

There were no major sales, with a big bid coming from Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen for the services of Tolgay Arslan, however I was not willing to part with my most promising CM for only 10-12.5M despite having a lot of disputes with him in regards to contracts and disciplinary fines.

Braunschweig Capitulation

View attachment 360520
Scrapping up BVB

Two of our better performances. The Braunschweig game was a great way to start off the league campaign, with Ince and Bellusci having great Bundesliga debuts. Went down to 10 men early and had to deal with quite a lot of pressure in the midfield for a while before Reus was also sent off, and Dortmund conceded their first goal (the only goal they've conceded in the first 4 league games). Although both teams had 2 goals called back for offside, we had 10 shots on target to Dortmund's measly 2, and hit the woodwork 3 times! A good result nevertheless.

Bundesliga Table after 4 weeks.

View attachment 360519

Nurnberg proved themselves to be a formidable team last season, and Augsburg also did well to compete with the top half, so it's no surprise they've both had strong starts to the season. Dortmund have been missing Lewandowski in front of goal, and Rafa Benitez has also dropped 3 points as Bayern manager. We're the highest scoring team in the league at the moment and only Dortmund have conceded fewer goals. A great defensive record considering we lost Jonathan Tah to injury, although he will be back after the international break.

View attachment 360518

No surprises as we dominate all of the charts. Calhanoglu has really turned into something else this season, Diouf is relishing his role as a DLF and feeding the attack well, Zoua has been impressive and is really enjoying his football on the right wing and Tom Ince has featured in 3 Team of the Week's.

Europa League

View attachment 360514

We should qualify comfortable from this group. We have two real minnows in Turkish side Bursaspor (who I know from first hand experience hate playing against the pressing sides) and Ukrainian surprise package Karpaty. The only real competition should come from Tottenham, who are the reigning Europa League champions. That being said, I won't be underestimating any of my opposition.

They have both been so important this month it's hard to split the two. Overall, Ince was more consistent, but Calhanoglu was more dominant in the games where he performed, and he was the difference against Dortmund. So I've given both of them the Player of the Month. Both of them showing so much promise.

The winning run continues. We drew Bayern Munich in the German Cup, and I figured I would make the league and continental competitions my main focus for the season, playing our second string against a Munich side who weren't holding anything back. Hannover and Cottbus both gave us late frights, with Cottbus scoring two in injury time and almost getting an equaliser. Hopefully the boys don't get too complacent over the course of the season.

View attachment 360401

5 points clear at the top, but Munich do have a game in hand, so we'll just say we're 3 points up. Very promising start to the season, a lot better than 12 months ago when we were struggling for consistency. If we can keep a few more clean sheets we should guarantee a top 3 finish, maybe even challenge Bayern Munich, although that would be a miracle in the long run, as we simply don't have the squad depth to cover for injuries.

View attachment 360400

Mame Diouf gets on the score sheet a few times to make his way up into the top goalscorers list, relieving some pressure from Calhanoglu, who has been excellent from set pieces. Bellusci has already made an impact at the Imtech Arena, being involved in a lot of challenges and really boosting the defensive workrate.

View attachment 360374

Carried our great form into October. Got a solid win against Bursaspor in the Europa League, and dominated Leverkusen. We were unlucky not to win by a bigger margin but we got the 3 points and that's what matters at the end of the day. Wolfsburg brought our winning streak to an end, so my record against them stands at 2 losses and a draw, but they were always going to be difficult with the home ground advantage. Davy Propper nets his first goal in an important draw at the Imtech Arena vs Tottenham, who recovered well from their shock loss to Bursaspor in the first round of group games. Hakan and Diouf finish the month as they started it, bagging the goals against Frankfurt. Again we failed to keep as many clean sheets as we would have liked.

View attachment 360371

Bayern dropping points again, as we stay atop the Bundesliga table. We're slowly pulling away from the top-half teams, with 10 points separating us from 5th. Nurnberg also keeping their stellar start to the season going, with 2 games in hand and the potential to get within 4 points of the top.

View attachment 360370

Tom Ince was out through injury, but no matter, as Hakan Calhanoglu puts in an extra workload, as do Diouf and Maximilian Beister. Hakan quite involved in all aspects of the game, as shown by his heavy influence in the charts.

So proud of his accomplishments throughout October. His early goal against Leverkusen got us the 3 points, and he saved us from being totally embarrassed against Wolfsburg, keeping us in the fight until a few goals at the end made sure we returned to Hamburg empty handed. Beister also set up a few wonderful goals and showed just how great he can be. Only got a chance in the side because Ince was out through injury, and made sure we didn't miss the English winger at all.

View attachment 359985

Our 2nd string team lost to Tottenham in the Europa League. With Bayern being the first game in December, i wanted to focus on the league in November to capitalise on their early slip up in the league to try to pull away. Hakan Calhanoglu played an important role in us winning all of our league games for the month. The 2nd string also got a great result against Karpaty, which means we have a huge goal difference on Bursaspor who we play last and have a 3 point lead over in the group. Qualification is all but guaranteed at this stage unless we lose big.

View attachment 359984

Rafa Benitez is still trying to work out his Bayern Munich team as they suffer from inconsistency. They dispatched of Cottbus 8-0 but also had a draw in November so we moved 7 points clear at the top. I'm hoping for a draw at the Allianz to start off December to keep our 7 point lead over them heading into the break. Although I don't expect us to win the league, the longer we stay ahead, the better our chances of pulling off the greatest upset in Bundesliga history.

View attachment 359983

Tom Ince returned from injury and had a slow return to the first team. Hakan Calhanoglu scored in all league games, amassing 4 goals from 3 starts and a goal off the bench against Nurnberg, levelling with Lewandowski for the Golden Boot.

We follow up the win against Bayern with a draw against Bursaspor to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Europa League. A solid win against Mainz and we hang on against Augsburg after a horror tackle from Diouf sees him sent off early on.

I wonder if we'll go far enough, and how Bayern will fair in the competition.

Player of the Month

Our season so far reminds me a lot of Liverpool this year. We've only kept 5 clean sheets in our 17 league games, but because of this bloke we've always managed to outscore our opponents, so it's no surprise that Hakan Calhanoglu is again the Player of the Month.

Transfer Window Preparation

View attachment 359885

Milan Badelj's contract was expiring at the end of the season, and he was refusing a contract extension earlier but I managed to secure his services until 2019, although I only pushed the contract through so I can sell him instead of giving him away for free. He gets a 19k/wk bonus.

View attachment 359883

The board asked me if I wanted to reconsider our expectations for the season but I decided not to change them. I don't want us to flop in the 2nd half and have my job security come under questioning, and I also don't need the added transfer budget, as I'm not really looking to bring anyone in during the winter.

Some solid performances in the friendlies, a lot of rotation, with everyone staying fresh and raring to go for the 2nd half of the season. And didn't they prove that they meant business. A huge win against Gladbach, and an even better win at the Signal Iduna Park, arguably one of the toughest away fixtures in Europe. Dortmund had only conceded 9 goals in the league coming into the game, 2 of those in our previous encounter (so 7 in their other 17 fixtures). Really pleased with the win and knew it was going to be tight. It seemed like there was going to be a huge anti-climax when Hertha Berlin went up by 2 goals early on, but a change in tactics and personnel in the 2nd half saw us come back to clinch a last minute equaliser.

View attachment 359803

Bayern Munich failed to win against Schalke on the last day of the month, and so we moved a point further ahead, extending our lead to 14 points, as Wolfsburg find a good run of form and Stuttgart fall off the pace. What a miracle it will be if we can hold on. There aren't often fairy tales in football but this could be one of them.

View attachment 359802

Hakan Calhanoglu moves to the top of the Golden Boot race, and is not too far off Muller for assists either, climbing up to 8. Diouf returns from suspension in February so he should start scoring a few as well. Huntelaar has been in exceptional form this season when he hasn't been injured, and is banging them in at a rate of a 55 minutes per goal.
Youth Facilities
View attachment 359801

The upgrades to the youth facility finished in October last year, and with our finances looking good I decided to ask the board for another improvement. It took a little persuading, but the construction is scheduled to begin at the start of next season. Our U19's have won every game since the recent improvements, so I can't wait to see what happens when we get these improvements next season.

View attachment 359797

Beister wins the Player of the Month. Calhanoglu put in a few really good performances as well, but I just felt Beister deserved it after saving face in front of our fans at the Imtech Arena against the capital club in that last fixture of the month.

Transfer Window

View attachment 359796

West Bromwich listed him with his contract running out. Our scouts rate him higher than Coates, so I offered a direct exchange of Coates for Dawson. The Hawthorns rejected the proposal and accepted a few bids from other clubs around the 600-700k mark. So I thought I'd just offer him a pre-contract as he said in the media joining a club of HSV's stature would be a dream come true. He rejected the contract offers from others and will be joining up with us at the start of next season.

February Outlook

View attachment 359795

The fixture remains a little congested at the start of the month, which will test our players' fitness, but we are lucky not to be facing any major teams who have depth to threaten us. Won't be taking anything for granted despite our previous results against Braunschweig and Hannover. We also return to Europe to face Shakhtar Donetsk.

View attachment 359390

We started off the month with convincing victories over the minnows in the league. Shakhtar proved too difficult to break down with the 2nd string team, however we held on to a goalless draw. The team were fatigued against Stuttgart, with a lot of players not playing at their best. We took the lead twice, but failed to hold off Michael Laudrup's team who have improved significantly under his tenure. Shakhtar have a very good record at home in continental competition and we couldn't do much to change that. I really would have liked to have made the quarter or semi finals to at least get some more european experience for our youngsters. We have a very strong team (highest strength attribute rating in the Bundesliga) and our attacking style should suit the UCL more next season. It was a good experience nevertheless.

View attachment 359388

Our unbeaten run in the league continues, as we move 15 points clear of Bayern, although they do have a game in hand and an easy run coming up in March, whereas we have a a lot of mid-table teams to contest. We have however all but guaranteed a spot in the UCL next season even if everything does go south from here until the end of the season.
View attachment 359385

Hakan Calhanoglu. What a year he is having. Mame Diouf's hat-trick saw him climb back to 3rd in the golden boot running as Huntelaar has had a slight dip in form, failing to score in his last couple of starts.

Player of the Month

View attachment 359386

We ended the month on a sour note, but Hakan was influential once again in our league performances. He's picked up 10 man of the match awards this season now, double the amount of the next highest. He's being played as an Advanced Playmaker in the no.10 role, yet he's outscored everyone else in the competition and is 1 assist short of Muller at the top of the assist charts. He has pretty much been the Lionel Messi of the squad. He's value has also doubled since the turn of the month, as we celebrated his 21st birthday.

I cannot fathom how Ross Barkley won the European Golden Boy award. Apparently he was the key to England's WC win. So annoying that Hakan has shown more promise this season than any other player in the world. If he keeps this up, he'll be one of the front runners for the award next season, and might even challenge Messi for the Ballon d'Or.

March Outlook

View attachment 359384

The players can now focus solely on securing the league campaign. We only need a further 16 points from our remaining 10 games to clinch the title, and we have a decent run to the end. View attachment 359368

I was hoping for a win against Leverkusen but knew it was always going to be a difficult match-up away from our home support. Our bogey team Wolfsburg were dominated but looked set to beat us again until a Hakan Calhanoglu equaliser late on in the game.

We struggled at the start of the next two games, but I changed my instructions to exploit the flanks rather than the middle of the park, and emphasises a focus on playing wider. Took the opposition by surprise, and netted a few important goals, and more importantly wins, including a big one over 4th place Freiburg.

View attachment 359361

Bayern were relentless throughout March and look like they want to make the most of every opportunity they get to pull points back on us. We still have a 14 point lead at the top but they have the game in hand. The win against Frankfurt meant we secured qualification for the Champions League. We now need another 11 points from the remaining 6 games to secure the title.

View attachment 359358

Lewandowski in great form, taking the lead for the golden boot, although Calhanoglu has had to share his goals with Diouf. Calhanoglu does lead the assist charts now, with Ince tied for 2nd with Muller and Draxler. Jonathan Tah was in good form throughout the month and makes an appearance in the defensive stat charts.

Player of the Month

View attachment 359357

Jonathan Tah hasn't made too many big appearances this season, as we've been more conservative at the back rather than having the players push-up, but he ensure we kept a couple of clean sheets, an important one against Leverkusen at the start of the month being one of them.

April in Review - Lead Up to the Title Decider

View attachment 359344

We knew Schalke would be a hard game, and we got the early but failed to hang on, conceding late into the game. A scrappy win against Union Berlin, with Tolgay Arslan being red carded for the 2nd time this season, in only the 5th minute. We conceded early in the 2nd half but a great corner from Calhanoglu to Tah at the near post ensured we took the 3 points.

Bayern Munich dropped points against Dortmund and Cottbus, and we headed into the Nurnberg fixture needing a win to secure the title. We had a lot of the advantage but were struggling to find an equaliser until Tah popped up again. We were unable to find the net again, which meant the title would have to wait for another day.

Bayern Munich - Playing for the Title

I felt confident we would get a win against Mainz or Augsburg in May and clench the title, and with Munich heading into the game coming off 2 draws in their last 4 games, I felt we could even win it at home if we could take points off them.

View attachment 359342

We absolutely dominated the game, and had a lot of chances in the first half. Bayern were just on the backfoot, and we played with a lot more confidence. We played like champions out there in front of the home crowd.

View attachment 359341

A well deserved victory. We got two up through our main men, Diouf and Calhanoglu before Ribery got one back for the visitors but it was too little too late as we held the Beasts of Bavaria off to clench the title.

View attachment 359340

You may have seen that I've been playing with a 'tiki taka' tactic. It's not the same style as Barcelona in real life, as I play deep in defence and look to break on the counter. So it's somewhat parking the bus with slow build-up play, a fusion of Chelsea and Liverpool from last season. That's why we don't concede a lot of goals but are still susceptible in defence. It helps that we have the strongest team (average strength rating) in the Bundesliga. Badelj (Xadelj) is always racking up high figures.

Champions!

View attachment 359336

Hopefully we can add some depth next season and challenge for the title again, and make an impression in Europe. How much I focus on the German Cup remains to be seen.

View attachment 359334

The top 2 teams have cemented their positions on the table but there is still a huge fight going on for the remaining Champions League qualification spots.

View attachment 359332

Calhanoglu in prime position to take both the Golden Boot and the Assist King title. Great to see he isn't the only HSV representative, with Diouf and Ince providing the goals and assists respectively.

No matter how good or bad the rest of the men on the pitch play, Jansen is always consistent, and it was his consistency which helped us to the title, so he gets a special mention for always being there when needed and being a threat on the left flank, causing headaches for all opposition, big or small.

Quality mate. Didn't expect to to overtake Bayern & win the league in only your 2nd season.

I honestly can't believe it myself. The key was Hakan Calhanoglu. He didn't get injured once, appearing in all 34 games, and only once off the bench. Diouf and Ince played a huge role, as did Diekmeier and Jansen. I'm going to bring in a few players and offload others. Strong interest for Tah by Barcelona, I'm hoping he'll understand why I want to hold on to him (unless they pay the 60m I want for him). Hakan's value has also shot up to almost 19m, from 6m at the start of the season. I really want to hang onto my core players. I'm going to provide the end of season update next. I really can't be bothered posting it because it's going to be a big one. Haha, stay tuned.

EDIT: Calhanoglu valued at 22m.
