Parker 'named England captain'

And since when does a strip of fabric make you a better or worse leader, or mark you out as a designated one? Gerrard and Rooney and Parker will all still lead by example, strip of fabric or not. They'll get the best out of others, strip of fabric or not.

The captain's role is treated by -literally- every other country in the world as ceremonial. We still have some archaic view about it being important, much like we cling on to our outdated love of a rigid 4-4-2. We need to modernise, and we can begin by not caring about the captaincy as much as we do now.

Just give the armband away to someone who has no quality at leadership and when the chips are down the other team mates tend to look at that player for inspiration and leadership. You can have alot of team mates with a good influence but you still need one out there who can stand above the others. It is still important to any team to have a captain that leads. As I said it is the same with all team sports and that certain player is often named as captain.

1. Abbr. Capt. One who commands, leads, or guides others, especially:a. The officer in command of a ship, an aircraft, or a spacecraft.
b. A precinct commander in a police or fire department, usually ranking above a lieutenant and below a chief.
c. The designated leader of a team or crew in sports.

Dont really care who is captain tbh, but would have liked to see younger member of squad get ago who will actually be playing in future tournaments.

So guys, who's going to start ? My formation would be:
-Hart-
Jones-Smalling-Cahill-Bains
Parker-Carrick
Adam J.-Gerrard- Young
Welbeck

Young and Welbeck would be great counterattacking threat, Johnson is unpredictable, he can cross and cut inside. With Parker's and Carrick's defensive abilities and passing, Gerrard would have free role to express himself. Defense is solid, only Cahill is doubtful. Is Jagielka in the squad ?

Post needs more '80's English football cliches and media buzzwords.

This is my point. ONLY WITH ENGLAND DOES THE ABOVE HAPPEN. If we devalue the captain's armband, perhaps players will start looking towards the actual leaders on the pitch rather than the man who a piece of fabric says is MEANT to be leading them. Every other country doesn't do this. Spain, for example, have Casillas as captain, but invariably look for Carles Puyol to be their inspirational leader. Germany, a young team, have Lahm as their captain, but look for the calming influence of the experienced Bastian Schweinsteiger or Miroslav Klose. Messi is Argentina's captain, but he's not necessarily a brilliant leader. Luckily, the Argentines look to players like Zanetti and Mascherano. Ronaldo is Portugal's captain, but you'd be mad to think he's a good role model. The Portuguese therefore have leaders like Bruno Alves, Pepe and formerly Ricardo Carvalho.

It just isn't important at all. Disregard other team sports; we're not talking about them right now.

Christ this is getting boring.

Someone make a match thread.
