Paying over the odds

Whenever I try to sign a decent player I end up having to pay well over the odds, unless it's some at the end of the career. I recently tried to sign Luis Suarez who was valued at about £4.5m, and another attacking midfielder who was valued around £3m. After putting a number of increasing bids up to around £12m there clubs came back to me asking for £30m for Suarez, and about £23m for the other player. They are both what could be considered good up 'n' coming players who you would expect to pay a bit more for, but £30m for Suarez??? Am I doing something wrong? Or does this happen with certain players? To be honest I have this problem signing a lot of players and have actually got fed up with it so hardly bother trying now. I think I have only signed 2 players in 3 transfer windows.
 
Same for me - Mattia Cassani for 17.5 million. No thanks :O!
 
If you bid say £12 million and they negotiate £30 try meet them somewhere half way, I would say they would probably accept £15m + £7.5m monthly installments over 48 months.
 
I was just wondering if it had something to do with the length left on their contract or something like that. Should I be doing searches for players nearing the end of their contracts, or is just that the team doesn't want to sell and maybe I should look elsewhere.

That will get you bad deals quite often. You should only increase your offers slightly. I have had cases where I offered $10M, they asked for $30M or so and I bought the player for $12-13M. It takes time, but it will get you good deals. Using installments, you will have to work harder to reach an agreement IMO, so keep that in mind.
 
That can help also, as can making friends with the manager, or declaring your interest and unsettling him. I find these rarely work though.

Yes but it saves money in the short-term
 
a lot of people tend to approach the transfer market badly. this is not aimed at the OP personally its just a general obverstaion, but it might helo him out
for example ive seen people buy maicon for 102 million. that makes you a fool frankly. in older FMs you simply would have just got the "not for sale" message, because that is exactly what that figure means, but that was changed people said it it was unrealistic, and every player has their price, which is true by and large.

you cannot simply buy anyone you want, at the price you want. sounds fairly obvious but people dont realise. a player may have a set vale, but current form, current and potential ratings, contracts, club reputation, happiness, club wealth etc all have an impact on the transfer.

OP, for example, to you suarez might be an up and coming youngster, but to ajax hes their star player and indispensable unless the fee is extortionate, ie 30 million. that price is saying" we do not want to sell, but you really want him, we take you for all you worth"

if you want aplayer on the cheap you have to work for it, that means unsettling him, and getting on your side by becoming a favourite of his, and thats takes months. if i want someone in summer. i start working on him by january at the latest. transfers need to be planned if you want value

The contract length is a factor. There isn't much difference between 4 or 5 years left, but when a player is in his last year then you can sign for a ridiculously small sum. I once signed regen similar to Messi for 8M when he had 8 months to go. Maybe I could have got him on a free but I decided to act before the bigger clubs made their move.


And as said when negotiating a deal, up your offer about 10% and try again, if it fails up it another 10%. You should get Suarez for 18M maximum.

And use your scouts, a good scout will tell you quite accurately how much a player will cost.
 
I overspent to get a left-back for Liverpool, I stupidly sold Fabio Aurelio to Real Madrid for £5m thinking I could get a cheap replacement, then I ended up forking out £30m for Fernando Navarro.
 
The most rediculous thing I have ever seen is 152 million for Pato. If they try to make you pay too much, it basically means they don't want to sell unless they get a massive offer.

I do that to the computer when there is an inquiry with one of my players, they usually back out... except Man City who inquired about Ashley Cole, I said 40m, next day I get a 40m pound bid for him, didnt accept of course
 
Yes some players have high valuations.. Madsheep has pretty much explain why..
