Player fitness for national teams

Does anyone know why player fitness for national teams is so poor?

I often have games Sat-Wed-Sat-Wed at club level and for the most of them, the players are able to recover and play many consecutive games before perhaps needing to rest for one game. However when managing a national team, I often have to rotate the whole team when I have qualification games on a Wed and Sat because the players are knackered. It is the same when in Euro or World Cup tournaments as well.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
