Player not signing new contract! Please help

Alex Smithies only has 1 year left on his contract, and refuses to enter negotiations over a new contract! What can I do to get him to sign, because I don't want him to leave on a free at end of season?

Only thing that comes to mind is to praise his good performances up for a while, get him in your good books and then retry at a later date. Nothing you can do at this time really.

Get him to play well and tell him he is doing a good job every month or so, only thing i can think of anyways
