I am talking about the little green/orange/red discs that appear next to he players role/duty to indicate how comfortable they are in that role.

I guess my question is how much notice do other managers take of them?

Currently in a save with Morecambe, I have Reece Deakin on the left wing, played outstanding as my AML all season in the VNL and we are looking bang on to get promoted, so, after a season of playing a control or attacking formation (4-1-2-3 / 4-2-4) with wingers, I am preparing for a harder season and need a solid defensive/counter tactic for League 2.

Deakin gets a full green disc as AML on Winger/Support, and almost full green on Winger/Attack so I am confident in playing him as AML/S or AML/A, but put him in a 4-1-4-1 as Left Midfield, and he is less than half a red disc when given the same role/duty. I am not confident with what I am asking if he has such a poor indicator for that position.

His attributes are the same for both, and I basically want him to do the same as he has all season just a bit deeper. Have played a couple of game s in VNL against bottom teams and one in the FA Trophy semi using this tactic and he has played OK, but should I persevere with training and tactic familiarity or find another solution?

Thanks in advance

I think the red disks can be indicative of problems that person might have in a position yeah, I tend to watch the games on extended and see how they play.

For example, holding midfielders can have red disks for CB or WB and perform perfectly well in those positons. And because I like to build patiently from the back ,having red disk holding midfielders in defence can be beneficial. I won a game with Gagliardini, Valero, and Brozovic at the back recently at Inter, for a laugh. I think it's not unreasonable to say, that in a possession based side, having international quality holding midfield players at CB, could be an advantage against weaker teams.

Not sure about wingers never really looked. But AML's can often struggle at WB, and get easily beaten and lead to clear cut chance creation. However, Perisic who has a red disk for RWB can function over there, Chiesa is ok over there, but Rafinha gets skinned too easily. I guess it's a case of trying them out first in the games. Figure out, what positive and negative things players in that role do, then evaluate your red disk players. So for a wing back, do they get forward ? Put crosses in, play sensible passes, assume decent defensive positions, and not get skinned too easily. The issue of getting skinned might not be so problematic for an LM because you have the LB as a next line of defence.

So I think in a counter system, an AML ahould be able to perform in a ML position adequately. And if his other attributes match the system that you play, and he is well integrated in the team, shouldn't be an issue surely ?

shouldn't be an issue surely ?
\Probably not, but it's the 'confidence' I have that is the issue. Going forward he's fine, he's quick, can cross (inhuman number of assists) can beat his man. I just dont understand the difference between a full green disc, and a sliver of red for, essentially, a very similar role.

When we have the ball I don;t have an issue, when we don;t have the ball he's not the best tackler, but he should just be an extra body in that area, getting in the way and helping his FB out against what will be much stronger opposition wide players.

Will stick at it with him and see if hi ML disc changes colour as he becomes more familiar with it.

I know I need a new AMR / MR but was hoping to keep Deakin there to help with the balance. Otherwise I may have to look at a new tactic to park the bus - 4-1-4-1 has always been my go to bus.

I don't pay a great deal of attention to the discs as a general rule

The only attribute affected, to my knowledge, by playing a player out of position is "Decisions". If he has the attributes to play Winger effectively at AML, then he should have them for ML. Worth getting him to work on that position in training though to improve his familiarity and the disc will become greener.

I'm not saying to completely ignore the discs.... but I pretty much ignore them.

Part of it is positional familiarity. So someone who isn't a natural at a given position is going to be mostly red, no matter what role is selected. As @PatrickLFC says, playing someone out of position really only affects decision making. And if they have the skills to play there, they will perform. Retraining to become more familiar doesn't take that long (depends on some factors). In my current save, I was using 3 forwards who aren't rated as ML/MR in those positions and it worked out very well. Because they had the key attributes I wanted.

The second aspect is the game interpreting how they will do at a given role. Just because the game says they won't do well at a given role doesn't make it so. If they have the skills and it fits the tactic, they will do fine. There are a few specialist roles that have CA minimums - Complete Forward and Complete Wingback come to mind. So lower level players who are below that minimum CA will always show it as their worst, even if they actually are suited to it based on their attribute distribution. Despite that, I've had a forward break the league goal record for a single season in a fairly strong league playing as a Complete Forward when they weren't "suited to it", according to the suitability indicator. They had they skills I wanted and the CF role fit the tactic, so it still worked just fine.

It only affects the player's DECESIONS, so the less familiar the player is with his position the more his decesion attribute is affected.
