Player's Ability/Potential over Statistics

I am currently playing as Bishop's Stortford in the BSS and have an Assistant Manager with JPA 13 and JPP 13 and a Scout with JPA 15 JPP 15. They are always telling me that Player X would be a quality signing and is a lot better than Player Y even though Player Y's stats are much better! (One example of this is with a DR with takling of 11, Marking of 8 who was currently in my squad who [so i'm told] is worse than a guy with tackling of 2(!!) and marking of 4!) Now, if it was up to me (which it is as long as i keep everyone happy and play well) i'd obviously pick the guy with the better stats, but i'm not too sure if thats what to do as i know the game works with each players Ability and Potential. I'd like some advice, if you guys could be so kind. Thanks in advance.

Do oyu have screenies of the two? Maybe ones more well rounded or has more potential
