Did you ever play your tactic without a single man with playmaker role? I mean no deep-lying, in the middle or even as a striker or on side positions. Or, is it even possible? :)
 
it's possible, just means you won't have as many defence splitting plays, although, thouse players who's first role are a playmaker of some kind still tend to act a play maker at times whilst filling out their specified role.
 
A simple direct 4-4-2 can be set up to have no playmaker. Set up like this:
GK

FB(Au)-CD(D)-CD(D)-FB(Au)

W/WM(A)-CM(D)-CM(S)-W/WM(A)

TM(S)-P(A)

No one in that formation really fills the role of playmaker since you are just looking to play it forward to your target man to distribute that ball, which makes him the closes thing to a playmaker.
