Belarussian Cup Final: BATE Borisov vs Shakhter Soligorsk
Context: I could add a lot of context, but long story short, I've been managing in Belarus for 12 years, first with Volna Pinsk and then with Shakhter Soligorsk, aiming to win a trophy, and thus far, failing to do so due to some bad luck in cup ties and BATE's utter domination of the domestic league (Last season I finished 2nd to them with 83 points from 33 games).
Going into the game, Shakhter have had a slow start to the league campaign, while BATE, typically, have won every game, despite appointing a new manager pre-season to replace their previous one, who retired. Injuries have plagued my Shakhter side in the run up to the game, and 3 of my 4 first choice defenders are missing, with my top goalscorer just returning from injury to make the bench. My centre back pairing for the game have never played together. BATE are comfortable favourites.
The match is underway, I sit back and just hope we keep the score down. BATE break through our surprisingly resilient makeshift defence 2 or 3 times in the first half but ultimately squander their chances. Half time: 0-0.
Second half, fingers still crossed, a similar story, except this time BATE have a succession of chances from corners. In the second half alone, they hit the bar 3 times and have two efforts cleared off the line. Unbelievable last ditch defending but my players are tiring. Just about though, we make it to the end of 90 minutes. 0-0.
Extra time, and just two minutes in, another BATE corner sees us concede a penalty. The break through at last for BATE, surely? Nope, my keeper's having none of it, great save. Half time in extra time: 0-0.
110 minutes: BATE finally find the break through as their centre forward storms away from my exhausted centre halves and beats the keeper one on one...
116 minutes: Equaliser! My star striker scrambles home a corner after coming off the bench on his return from injury. One of our first chances all game!
119 minutes: BATE are all over us again, the whole team is exhausted, but suddenly we can break.. Minasyan, the winger who conceded the earlier penalty and is leaving for Deportivo in 6 weeks time romps forward to the byline, pulls it back, and its turned in, Shakhter Soligorsk lead with just 90 seconds to go.
121 minutes: Last ditch attack for BATE, terrible backpass by my left back.. their strikers gone down.. surely a dive? No? Another penalty for BATE! And this time, the taker makes no mistake. 2-2: Penalty shootout.
BATE's man up first - hits the post! Get in!
Grigaitis steps up for us - blazed over! Whyyyyyy!?
Next up for BATE, Savitskiy, who scored their equaliser - Saved! Yes!
1-0 to Shakhter! Skinderis scores!
Tango steps up, BATE's star player.... wide!
Burton..... 2-0 Shakhter!
BATE finally convert a penalty at the 4th attempt...
But Algrabli scores the winning penalty and I finally grab some silverware in Belarus!
One of those moments that keeps you playing, for sure!
