I am playing as Gefle in the swedish league and I just bought a striker with three preferred moves.

1. Rarely runs with ball.
2. Gets into opposition area.
3. Plays with back to goal.

He is a targetplayer with great jumping reach (20), good heading (15), good mental stats and good flair/technique. He is rather slow but thats what u kinda have to expect with targetplayers at this level.

What I was thinking is doesnt "Gets into opposition area" and "Plays with back to goal" kinda work against each other? Should I unlearn "Plays with back to goal"? Or is it good to have since hes got good flair, technique and passing?

I play 4-4-2 with him as target man on support next to an advanced forward.

i think if you play him target man "plays with back to goal" is good, "gets into opp area" i'm not sure but maybe you can't unlearn it, if you use him with attack duty with these moves is better, also the wide target man role should suit. however yes they're not the best combination :) he is a regen?

I want him to get into the area cause I play with two speedy wingers and offensive wing backs. I bought him to be the target of the crosses, my advanced forward is also very good in the air and tall/strong/pacy. My goal is to have two beastly targets to cross at. I cant play him out wide cause he is to slow, I want him in the box always, but my concern is that I might need a link between attack and midfield and he might be able to do that job good aswell since he is good with his feet and great passing/vision etc.

My inner midfield is one advanced playmaker on attack duty and one achor man.

And no he is not a regen.

Maybe he'll play with his back to the goal when the team have possession, especially centrally, so he can receive the ball, hold it up and then pass it when support arrives. He'll then get into the box when the ball goes wide to the wingers.

Thats exactly what I want him to do, and I guess my question is does a player with those preferred moves do that or do the moves just cancel eachother out and make him useless? I am new to this game so at first sight I was very delighted finding a player like that very cheap but then I started thinking.. :P

The only real way to know is to play him. Whilst someone else may have tried someone with those preferred moves, they won't have tried someone with the exact same stats. For example, the high flair may mean that whilst those moves don't usually work, he makes them work well? Just a guess, but I imagine it's unlikely that someone has tried that combination, and if they have it still might not mean you'll get the same results.

Also, I would imagine if two preferred moves cancelled the other one out (so to speak) then it would be a case of in any given attack movement, he'll use a different one as he sees fit. So for one attack he might hold up play with his back to goal whereas with another he might not make himself available and instead run towards the box. In a sense making him a bit unpredictable during the game, which is good and bad.

I've not messed with preferred moves much so I might be completely wrong and in that case hopefully some ancient fm-baser who played CM and has amassed a library on the subject will come along and help.

I've played five games with him now using my 4-4-2 and him as a target man on support. Hes done very well scoring five in five games with an average rating of 8.00. Hes got one hattrick aswell where he nodded in two corners and a free kick. Guess that doesnt show much of how he is doing in open play but when he gets like 7+ rating even when he doesnt score it tells me that hes doing great. The five games he played was four wins and one loss.

I am very happy with him so far. His name is Andreas Albers and he played for a danish second division team. Picked him up in the summer transfer window (swedish league starts in march) for 35k...bargain it seems.
