Looking forward to getting a shot, read a lot of good reviews. Can't be worse than last years

The fact that the demo has no commentary instantly makes it better than 2010. :)

------------------

The demo consists of 10 minute matches against the CPU or a human opponent. The demo will enable fans to play against the computer or offline multi-player matches with a choice of four clubs: either FC Barcelona and FC Bayern Munich or Copa Libertadores pair Chivas Guadalajara and Internacional (or Spain & Japan in the Winning Eleven Demo).

On the PS3 version after each game you have to sit through an un-skipable 6 minute trailer (the one they showed at Gamescom). I've heard you can disable it on the PC version but not sure about the XBox. Anyway, on the PS3 you're best just quitting the game and starting it up again which takes less than a minute.

If it's not dramatically improved from last years effort, this will be the last time I but PES :(

Fifa demo is amazing now once you get the hang of it, That 6 min trailer thing is shameful, Hoped PES be good this year for when I get bored of Fifa after a few months I could try and different football game but looks like it is Fifa 11 for the whole year

Pathetic, didn't they do this last year? unskipable video's?

how is the gameplay, movement and passing Lee? better than last year?

Not happy about only being able to play Bayern vrs Barca when last year you could mix and match. I suppose it's only a demo.

to be fair to both fifa and pes, my view on these game is basically

Fifa- not difficult AT ALL, ive played on top levels with every fifa and the difficulty is still weak, and its a fun game, nothing much challenging. No matter how they tweak the game engine, that bit of unrealistic control is there, i can use the top players in the game to run rings around defense.

PES- difficulty settings are much much well planned, top player is indeed a challenge, thats what gives this game a good challenging aura around it. It has more realistic features, sometimes the difficulty takes over and the fun comes out. but i love playing become a legend, much better concept than be a pro in fifa (where in pes your player stats grow, you change clubs, win awards and etc)

Sooooo. fifa is basically something i play to just waste time. i play pes to get a challenge :)

Its probably trhe game i most want to do well, because I know FIFA is going to maintain its brilliance, so PES need to pull out all the stops. Downloading the demo now, hoping its worthwhile, or I won't be buying it.

Yup they had the unskipable video last year as well. Thankfully the demo was so bad I only sat through it once.

Yeah it's a shame you can't play Barca vs Chivas etc. Would be interesting to see what the balance is like.

PES 2011 Demo

Passing 10/10: The passing is fantastic, the semi-manual passing is impressive and can really allow you to dictate the tempo and play the games how you want. The normal through balls seem a bit erratic though and seem to have a mind of their own at times, the lofted through balls are very impressive and aren't as lofted as previous games. Anyway forget this whole semi-manual passing, the real gem comes with the entirely manual passing. Hold down L2 and you take complete control with no assistance from the AI. While manual passing has been present in PES for a few years now the control scheme has always made it difficult to execute effectively but now all we have to do is hold L2 and you can start playing some killer balls.

Dribbling 7/10: Dribbling feels good with a lot more freedom, actually feels like 360 control. Players such as Messi & Ribery really show off how good the dribbling is, incredible close control and quick direction changes. But best of all, they aren't unbeatable and it's possible to get the ball off them with a well timed tackle. I haven't had much chance to play around with the new tricks as that's not a part of the game that's ever interested me, but from what I tried it seemed over the top and far to easy.

Shooting 8/10: On the whole shots seem a bit floaty compared to the previous iterations. But on the whole it's still pretty impressive (Although I preferred last years), scored some fantastic goals already. The placed shots have been improved from last year as well, they're a bit too accurate in the hands of good players though.

Defending 7/10: There's a new defending system for this year which makes pressuring the opposition more strategic instead of simply running at them and mashing the pressure button in the hope of winning the ball back. The system works pretty well, takes a bit of getting used to and even after about 30 matches I'm still falling into old tackling habits. A huge plus though is that the sliding tackles actually seem pretty darn useful for the first time in years thanks to the new animations. Only major problem is the amount of soft fouls that are given, this is probably more to do with teething problems with the new animations and collision detection rather than the tackles themselves.

Conclusion:
While it all sounds rather impressive if you base it on the four criteria above it doesn't give you the whole picture. The game certainly has a lot of small negatives which can sour the experience. Goalkeepers are still a big problem (Why as nobody perfected them yet?), they can make some incredible saves but too often they fumble soft shots right into the paths of oncoming attackers. Goalkeeper distribution (including goal kicks) hasn't changed from 2010 either and really slows down the game.

Throw-ins may of added the power bar but even that makes barely any difference, they're still slow and laboured and require a lengthy animation for any throw-ins that you want to go more than 5 yards. As well as the throw-ins and goal-kicks, the penalty system and free kicks haven't changed much either and still feel awkward and wasteful.

I mentioned earlier about the number of free-kicks but that isn't my main problem with the referees. They still struggle with the advantage rule, while I have seen advantage given a few times it still appears as if wild tackles on players who have just passed the ball go unpunished.

There are also a few positives, the game looks great with the new animations to go with the graphics they updated last year, the new broadcast camera angle gives the game a new dynamic look, and then there's the impressive tactical system with the addition of the automatic criteria based tactical changes it really allows you to set your team up to play exactly how you want.

So would I recommend it to PES Fans? Yes. Is it good enough to take people away from FIFA? Probably not.

Demo Rating: 7.5/10

Just played a match on the demo, was awful. Tackles when I clearly got the ball were given as a foul, shooting was impossible and keepers couldn't catch anything.

Had to try the demo as I do each year. It's clearly a step forward for PES and much better than last years game. I really want to enjoy but I'm really bad at it, it's frustrating but that's not down to the game, rather my own ability. I'll give it a few more go's in between the FIFA 11 demo but being a Fan of 10 and what they've built on, it's not enough to win me over this year. Just as Lee said.

If you're a fan of PES, I can't see why you wouldn't see this game as an improvement.

Downloading now, and Lee did you write that review?

How is the AI?

edit: I really dig it, atmosphere is great, and the passing is wonderful. You actually can aim passes now.

Yup, my review from a few days ago.

Not noticed any major problems with the AI, it all seems pretty solid. Although I've noticed that if I get a corner in the dying minutes of the game my goalkeeper is sent forward, even when I'm ahead by 2 or 3 goals.

Played it earlier and was impressed with all aspects to be honest, an improvement from 2010 for sure. My only qualm is the change in camera angle, I'd rather just have the standard one used in the previous game.

Looks promising, but im not sure if it will convince me enough to purchase over FIFA. May end up getting both if I have the moneyz.

I am loving it so far, such a vast improvement on last years game.

Passing is difficult but I am drawn to how good it is, I can pass to anyone anywhere given that I master the power bar. 360 movement has improved (still not as good as fifa) and you can actually turn players again woo. The pace of the game seems to have slowed from the classic pes and some through balls from Xavi just seem to easy and perfect.

The menu etc will take some getting used to and I don’t like the whole game plan carry on, I think it just exploits flaws?

Overall though I am impressed, even if I do suck at it now

smoke patch is brilliant. fifa has been better with licensing, butpes gameplay is way better. and what I've read about 11, it's getting even better...

There's an option to change the game speed as well Kris, pause it during the game and you can take it to -2 or +2. I prefer it slow-ish so I have it on -1 as it gives you a bit more time to think.

Really loving Iniesta on this game, everything that goes through him just oozes class. Player individuality is awesome as usual. If only PES had some catchy gimmick like Personality+ maybe everyone would *********e over it as well.

i'm really liking this demo, passing just looks so good. and when you score it feels so much more satisfying then on fifa.
