are we sure we can believe it its from goal.com afterall

Hmm, always better to wait for more reliable confirmation but if this is true, what a way to go out. A Spain legend.

I haven't heard it on SSN yet.

Wouldn't surprise me if it was true though... he's just won the World Cup, and won the Euro Cup in 2008, as well as the Champion's League in 2009 for his club. Maybe he wants to concentrate on winning some more domestic titles.

Not sure if this is true. If it is then it is a shame as he's a top defender. I guess he has achieved everything he can at that level now though.

If this is true, it is very surprising to me. I think he could have gone on to Euro 2012 at the least, as Spain's best defender. Besides Pique, he has no threat to his first team place. This means that, he could still go out on a high after, for example, Euro 2012, bnecause he would still have that first team spot beacuse he is such a good player. I'll be really surprised if this is true.

But what if they do what Italy did this year? Fail miserably.

Think it's good to go when your at the top. Legend of a player.

True, that could happen. But I cannot see Spain A) Growing really old and B) Getting complacent. This is what Italy did. Spain have proved they can cope with the pressure of being favourites (or confidence, as some might put it) by coming from Euro 2008 and winning the World Cup last weekend, with a two year gap - more than enough time to get complacent.

True, but I think at times some of the top strikers at the WC showed how little pace Puyol has left, look at Robben in the final, didn't find it that hard to get past him with his pace.

If he wants to have a long club career, he needs to play less games, so he can still keep the remaining pace he has left, instead of knackering himself playing internationals, and after winning the WC and European CC, there isn't much left to achieve in international football at his age.

Fair play to him, the guys won everything there is to win in the game so why not focus on prolonging his club career, he'd be 36 (I think thats right) by the next world cup so chances are he wouldnt make it anyway. Albiol to replace him?

quit whilst you are ahead.... there are only a small handful of players who have achieved the same things Puyol has experienced.... it is all most likely down here from here on out... so if he quits now he will be regarded as a legend and not something negative if spain fail in euro 2012

So two great players have retired from international football today. Sorry, there was only one, my mistake. Legend Carlos Puyol has retired, and so has legendary Emil Heskey. (Legendary for his misses)

NB: Legendary for his misses, not missus...

Seems like the best possible time to retire, won pretty much everything at International level and he looked short for pace in the World Cup so he'll be woefully exposed if he does play in the next Euro's.

another great of the game retired today! Henry and Puyol...
Over-shaddowed Emile's big day!!

Carles Puyol-my favorite central defender... A true legend!!!

Good, no more goals to knock germany out of the world cup :D

Good player though.

The best defense of the world, has been split up at international level. Hope it will take more time to split with Pique at club level...
