As promised, here is the season summary for FC Bleid:
We started pre-season in style, continuing the great form into the first few months of the season. I was always confident that we would avoid relegation with the players that I had managed to sign, but to finish September in 2nd place was a phenominal feat. We were knocked out on penalties in the 2nd round of the Belgian Cup, but then went on an 8 game unbeaten streak that ended emphatically against league leaders Bocholt in the final game of September.
The next 2 months continued in similar fashion, with just 2 away defeats. We maintained our unbeaten home record and finished November as the top scorers in the division. Olympic Charleroi claimed the first promotion playoff spot after 10 games.
Again unbeaten in December and January, we continued our promotion charge, despite losing captain and star player, Francisco Diaz on a free transfer. The final victory over Diegem in January saw us qualify for the playoffs as top of the leagues 2nd phase.
Then came the slump in form that I was fearing, and our title challenge began to falter. We were struggling for goals, and conceding far too many for us to fulfill our ambitions of top spot. Vise claimed a playoff spot.
The season came to an end, and FC Bleid finished in a respectable 4th position, with a playoff quarter final beckoning. I was delighted considering we were expected to be relegated in last place. On the back of a streak of 9 games without a win, we unexpectedly beat Charleroi in the quarter's, but suffered an agonising defeat in the semi's at the hands of Vise. Guzman missed a 92nd minute penalty to equalise in the 2nd leg, and we were doomed to continue in the 3rd division next season.
It was a fantastic achievement to finish 4th:
The end of season slump cost us the title:
Lamonaca was the standout performer. He, Omekanda and Rosario would be leaving the club at the end of this season:
