The bitter off-field feud that has accompanied the Champions League semi-final between Barcelona and Real Madrid turned into a racism storm when José Mourinho's assistant coach, Aitor Karanka, hit out at Uefa for overlooking the abuse allegedly directed at the Real Madrid full-back Marcelo by Sergio Busquets. Karanka claimed that tomorrow's semi-final second leg was of only "secondary importance" in the face of Uefa's failure to act to defend fair play and the abandonment of ethics in the sport.

"There will be a player on the pitch who racially abused another player," the Madrid assistant coach said, "while others who have done nothing wrong won't be there."

Karanka's comments come in the light of a video released by Real Madrid on Monday that they claim shows Busquets calling the Madrid full-back Marcelo a "monkey". They also came hours after Uefa announced that it had rejected the complaint made by Real Madrid against eight Barcelona players for "persistent and premeditated unsporting behaviour". Uefa likewise resolved not to act on the complaints made by Barcelona against Mourinho, saying that European football's governing body would be the "sole judge".

The Barcelona coach, Pep Guardiola, insisted Busquets had merely made a "mistake" and that it would be up to Uefa to decide if he should be punished. "I know these players. They are an example of professionalism," said the Barcelona coach. "They love this sport. Some of them, during the game, can make a mistake but as players they are exemplary both for Spain and for Barcelona." Asked if he would punish Busquets he said: "We are not proud when they make mistakes but I know these players. If we do something wrong, then Uefa have to decide. It won't happen again."

Uefa's statement made no specific mention of the alleged racist abuse but Madrid's assistant coach brought the issue to the fore after Real's release of the footage. In a piece about tomorrow's referee, Frank de Bleeckere, on Madrid's website and the Spanish version of their TV channel, the voiceover expressed a desire that the official would not fall into Barcelona's trap and that there would be no "disrespect" from the players. The comment came over a shot of Busquets cupping his hand to hide his words and saying something to Marcelo. Real's subtitles showed "mono, mono" – "monkey, monkey".

Uefa did not respond to calls tonight but Karanka made his views clear in the pre-match press conference. "After today's resolution the game itself drops to a secondary issue," he said. "[Uefa is] an organisation which talks about principles like respect and fair play and yet nothing has happened.

"We have seen the images which have been round the world, including a player making racist insults and covering his mouth to try to make it so that you can't see it. But he will be on the pitch, along with others. Other players who have done nothing wrong won't be. That is the most important thing today. The football is not."

Karanka also defended Mourinho's outburst following the first leg, in which he accused Uefa of favouring Barcelona and a series of referees of giving them beneficial decisions. Karanka added that he did not understand why no action was taken against Barcelona players for something that does appear in the rules when there were fines handed out to Real Madrid players for deliberately seeking out cards against Ajax earlier in the competition – which does not appear in the rules.

"A few months ago we were sanctioned for something that is not in the Uefa rule book. Now they are not sanctioning things that are in the rule book," Karanka said. "It's not a case of feeling unprotected but once again there seems to be different measures [for different teams]. Our position is the one that we made clear in our complaint to Uefa. What Mourinho said [after the first leg] was what anyone who had been in the stadium or watching the game on television would have said. This isn't an accusation against Uefa. I'm saying what's in the regulations and what isn't. These are provable and objective things."

The Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernández had earlier rejected suggestions that Uefa should act against them, describing the complaints as "pathetic and lamentable". He added: "Barcelona have always respected opponents and shown exemplary behaviour. It is logical that Uefa should turn down the complaints. I think it's lamentable and pathetic, everything that is going on – all the complaints and denouncements. It is sad. I would rather just talk about the football."

Real Madrid accuse Uefa of ignoring Barcelona 'racism' | Football | The Guardian

Madrid have filed a petition against him as well, for racism.

If Proven,
Hope the racist is banned for few games and a heavy fine. When all the players are fighting against Racism, here comes the idiot with Racist remarks against Marcelo.

How can he talk to/share dressing room with Abidal, Alves after making these remarks.. Good that many Barca fans wants some action to be taken against Biscuits by Club too so that Barca's image is not tarnished..

P.S: This thread is not for who dived, who hounded ref. This is for what action should be taken against players making racist remarks..

If this is true then Busquets has reached a new level of C*ntness.

I hope to god there is a great game of football today, if not, I wish there is huge fight with players being sent off from both sides.

Just when I thought Busquets couldn't go down in my estimations.

As said in the OP, it wouldn't be as ridiculous if his team didn't have Abidal and Dani Alves -_-

Interesting how it's come from Madrid, and nobody else in the Media has picked up on it. (I'm not saying whether it's true or not, because I don't know).
If so, Busquets should be ashamed of himself, especially when his team has the likes of Adriano, Keita, Alves and so on.

Though, I'm suprised that nobody has commented on the Madrid fans, who made monkey noises everytime Alves touched the ball after that incident...

Many picked up on it. Not sure about Media but in many forums it was discussed.

And regarding Madrid fans, haven't read. If true they should be banned from stadiums. And also players acting like mugs is different from the crowd with mass mentality. I'm not defending them, like i said, if true they should be banned from entering stadiums..

Meh, would love to see him calling 'monkey' to someone like the Toures, Vieira or Drogba. Before footballers, they are men, and Marcelo is hardly a big one. Didier would eat him [Busquets] raw on the field. Before all the bans, Biscuits should earn a good old beating... in Africa. And an ****-rape performed by a real Chimp.

Pot calling the kettle black (pardon the pun) tbh. Most Spanish clubs have elements of racism, Madrid can't cry about this when their fans regularly abuse black opposition players.

The Sunilvk7 one-man Barcelona hate crusade continues.

don't think I'm going to bother about the 2nd leg tbh. It's just going to boil over, be full of fights and be a non-footballing event. Will wait for the Man Utd v Barcelona final

Big difference between the 'fans' doing it and the multi-millionaires running around the pitch.

I've deleted my old post after reading this again.

I've thought thoroughly now, and I believe that after these many many many years of football being against racism, fighting against racism, for a schmuck like Busquets (known well for his Oscar winning awards for diving) to insult a player like that, in the field during a match is just pityful and shameful. I said in my earlier (deleted) post that I believe he should be banned.

I now say that he NEEDS to be banned. If UEFA don't react to this, they will be taking a very large step back in the fight against racism, in the fight for keeping racism OUT of football. UEFA make the right choice, don't screw up again.

I think the reason this is highlighted (sp) more than the fans is because

1. It's a player and he is meant to be helping stop racism, not joining in.

2. Madrid hate Barcelona so much, they do anything to get them in trouble.

He's definitely not calling him pretty, and I don't condone racism in any way, but this is already becoming embarrassing for Madrid. They don't know what else to do...

The beautiful game, and 2 teams who play it wonderfully. Ruining it and making a fool of themselves being racist, fighting, it's a war at the moment. If it was two English teams, our punishment would be massive, no doubt about it.

I don't think he's a racist, regardless of whether he actually said it. He probably said it to wind him up.

Busquets is being charged apparently:

Uefa has launched a disciplinary case against Barcelona's Sergio Busquets over alleged racism in the Champions League semi-final with Real Madrid.
Real posted a video on their website before the second leg showing Busquets allegedly calling full-back Marcelo "mono" (monkey) in the first leg.
The case will be heard on Sunday with a decision due the next day.
The incident was one of several in a heated tie between the Spanish rivals, that Barca won 3-1 on aggregate.
Both clubs lodged complaints to European football's governing body after an ill-tempered first leg at the Bernabeu, which was won 2-0 by Barcelona.

Madrid were unhappy with the behaviour of the opposing players and the red card shown to midfielder Pepe (one of three dismissals during the game, along with Barca reserve goalkeeper Jose Pinto and Real coach Jose Mourinho).
Barca protested over Mourinho's post-match comments alluding to favours from Uefa in big Champions League games and questioning the Catalan club's relationship with the European governing body.
The complaints were dismissed by Uefa, with Mourinho later handed a five-game European ban for his outbursts.
Mourinho chose not to speak to the media ahead of the second leg of the semi-final at the Nou Camp, which finished 1-1, thus booking Barca's place in the Champions League final at Wembley, where they will play Manchester United.
Instead, it was left to Karanka to bemoan Uefa's decision not to act on Real's claims of gamesmanship by Barcelona's players.
He said: "The match has been overshadowed by Uefa's resolution - it's on another plane now.
"We have been punished [with the suspensions for Pepe, Sergio Ramos and Mourinho], but there are [Barcelona] players who didn't respect the principles of fair play or who made racist insults, covering their mouths, who will be on the pitch.
"We say over and over there are double standards."
However, Barca coach Pep Guardiola countered by defending his players.
"My players are an example of professionalism and honesty," he said.
"Real might think we are unsporting but I think exactly the opposite," he said. "Fourteen of 20 players in the squad have grown up in this house and they all respect the values of the house.
"Mourinho was at Barcelona for five years and he knows our values: to win, fight and earn respect by respecting your rival."
