RED STAR - LIVING A DREAM

1st chapter - a beggining of a new era

I signed a contract with my favorite club on June 30th 2009.As always,I had a plan for 2-3 seasons ahead.
I wanted to make Red Star a main force in Serbia,and try make a respectable team for Europe.When I got apployed,our club was about 2 500 000 euros in balance,and tranfer budget was around million.Not very much,especially
because the squad was very young,with 10-15 new players,and the best player on loan (Castillo at Wolverhampton).
The best player in that moment was our captain Nikola Lazetic,but he was 31-years old,which is not so young for a winger.
My plan was to try some new tactics,so I decided to use a whole new formation,4-2-3-1,with two strong and technicly good
defensive midfielders and one complete forward.Also,my plan was to attack from the wings,so they were my main force,but
I also wanted to be strong from second plan,so I put my right full back with attacking mentality,and my left back with more
defensive assignments.

I could put Lazetic and Blazic on wings,but I thought it would be better to give a try with much younger options,Lazovic and
Sreckovic(both around 20 in that moment).My DM were Bogdanovic with good passing and technique and strong,tall African
Mhlongo,who joined us on loan.My first option in attack was Jevtic,and Perovic was second.Soon I realised I was wrong,because
Jevtic was better on the left wing,and Perovic alone up front.Two strong centre backs were Vilotic and Savic.Ninkov was attacking
full back,and Andjelkovic the defensive one.Goalkeeper was Stamenkovic,probably the best keeper I've ever had.The most important
player in this team was AMC,so I put Cadu in that position,because I needed some kind of Brazilian player there.

My sense for tactics gave the first important result in Europa League qualifications.We knocked down Juvenes Dogana easily with 6:1
aggregate win.Perovic scored three times,and Cadu twice.Sreckovic also made himself a scorer.Than,on my enormous surprise,we
got Serbian team in the next qual.round!It was Sevojno,lower division team which knocked out Red Star from Serbian Cup in 2008/2009 season.
Soon we've got our revenge.We beat them 3:0 at home and 3:2 away.Another easy win,but the bad news came after the match.We got Spanish
side Athletic Bilbao in final round!Hard opponent,with only four official games behind us.

That match was one of those you couldn't lost,even if you were 10 times weaker team.We were two goals ahead only 7 minutes behind us,but
Bilbao soon made themselves up,so it was 2:2 on half-time.On 65th minute,I decided to put all up front,because I saw our opponents are not
so strong I thought.They couldn't attack properly,so we took the game in our control.After some good attacks,Cadu scored 11 minutes until the end
and we won 3:2! Second leg was only formality.I knew we couldn't lost in that moment,especially in front of the best fans on the world.We won 2:1
and got ourselves in group B with Ajax,Aston Villa and Toulouse FC!!!

Anyway,between two Bilbao matches,we played a derby against Partizan at home.We were far better,but they scored on 91st minute and got themselves
a priceless 1:0 win.That was a moment in which I wanted to quit,but I believed in better days...

And they've comed!Soon we tied up 11 league games without lost,and also made quarterfinals of Domestic Cup!Unfortunately,seemed we weren't
ready yet for Europe.We drew with Ajax and Villa,and lost four games.But,we could be proud!

Without European competitions,we could just focus on domestic league.We kept winning and also waiting for a chance to rematch Partizan.When we've
got a chance,we took her with both hands.A 2:1 win was the best way to win a championship.Perovic and Cadu had scored a goal each,and our fans were going home happy.

Soon we won the league,but we lost in Cup final against Partizan.They were far better and won 1:3.Poor end of solid season...

2nd chapter - time for a success

After solid 1st season,our expectations were far bigger,as we wanted to retain our Superleague title and enter the Group Stage of Champions League.In order to do that,my plan was to upgrade squad on the next level,so we could knock out some of the strong teams we could get in qualifications.Soon,some players left us,but the basic of the team was still there with strong contracts(Perovic,Cadu,Lazovic,Sreckovic,Vilotic).I sold some low quality players like Lekic,Blazic,Ignjatijevic,and bought very talented and young players,Vitas and Zlatkovic.You can see that right here...



On the very beggining,we knocked out Racing FC and Helsinki JK from ECCQ,and we got ourselves Czech side Sparta Prague in the final round.Solid opponent and a good chance for us to reach Group Stage.First game in Prague was quite shocking!We left with 10 men only 17 minutes from the start,but still we made it 1:0 with a great goal by Perovic.It was a quiet game,but in the period from 57th to 62nd minute they scored twice,and we were a goal down,1:2!But,Perovic wouldn't be the him if he didn't make it 2:2.He scored a screamer from about 34m to make it draw.Our best player gave as a crucial goal in this qualifications.
But,second leg wasn't so easy as we thought it'll be.We were overloaded by our opponents,but only seconds before half time,Vilotic headed the ball behind Sparta's keeper after a good corner kick by Lazovic to bring us a 3:2 aggregate lead,and later,the win.

This time,we were quite lucky on the draw,as we got Inter,Zenit and PSV.Hard opponents,but it was possible to reach at least 3rd place,especially against PSV,team which had poor defence.But,it seemed PSV was the toughest opponent,as we lost 1:2 at home and 0:1 at Holland,while Zenit was the weakest link in our group.We crushed them 3:0 at Belgrade,while in St.Petersburg was 1:1.Crucial games were against Inter,probably the best European team in that moment.In front of our fans,we made the biggest victory in our nearest history,as we won 2:1 after 0:1 down at 52nd minute.We had a lot of luck,as we scored both time from the spot,but we deserved it.



Few days later,we lost in Milano 0:3,but we made it 3rd on the group's table at the end.Now we were supposed to wait for a good opponent in Europa League 1st knockout round.We got Norwegian side Rosenborg,a very good opponent.

I can't tell very much about domestic competitions,because we were a main force in Serbia.We had 11 victories and 6 draws at the end of first half.Also,we destroyed Partizan 4:0 at home!!!It could be bigger win,but this was a demonstration of strenght.Somewhere in April,we won at their stadium 2:0,and we were 13 points ahead in that moment.We won Superleague easily,but we were knocked out of Cup on penalties from Hajduk Kula.Bad luck...

In February,we played our matches against Rosenborg.Two easy wins,1:0 and 5:1,were great introduction to Last 16 and match against Everton.First match in Liverpool was tough,as they were a goal ahead on half-time.We equalized on 54th minute,as Bogdanovic scored from free kick.They were a goal front again when Anichebe scored his second,but deep into stoppage time Perovic scored his 15th goal of the season to make it 2:2 and a dramatic rematch in Belgrade.Unfortunately,it wasn't so dramatic,as Vaughan scored on 13th second,so we were down-hearted.In second half Anichebe scored again for his team,so it was all over.Our second lost at home this season in all competitions.Bad luck again,but it was our reality,as Everton was far much better team.

Anyway,I was delighted with this season.We made it last 16 in Europe,we won against teams like Inter and Zenit,and retained a Superleague title.Our players were at high prices,so I was very very proud.

I decided to skip my story about past seasons,so I'll update some results from this season:

JELEN SUPERLIGA SRBIJE
Red Star - Partizan 3:1(1:1) (Ignjovski 26',Nikolic 61',Mrkela 81' - Christopher 7')

Early goal by Christopher didn't abused us,as we equalized with a great goal by Aleksandar Ignjovski.We totally dominated the second half,when Nikolic gave us a deserved lead on 61st minute.Our great play and brave access to the game had been rewarded,as Mrkela scored nine minutes to the end.More than deserved victory for 5 points lead at the top on the table.

EUROPA LEAGUE LAST 32​

Red Star - PSV 2:1(1:1) (Perovic 14'71' - Wuytens 26')

After gaining a 2:2 draw in Holland,we were a close favorites in second match in Belgrade.As I really
don't know how to play bunker,I've decided to attack from the first minute.Brave access was rewarded
at 14th minute with the penalty,that Perovic turned into a leading goal.Soon,they picked themselves up,with a scruby goal by Wuytens.They dominated the second half,with two woodworks.We were lucky,and they were totally down,so we've closed the game in 71st minute.Perovic was a hero again,as
he was so many times.

EUROPA LEAGUE LAST 16​

Red Star - CSKA Moscow 5:3(4:1) (Perovic 3',pen 24',Djuricic 16',49',D'Angelo 45+3' - Langa pen 14',pen 78',Pereira 75')

One of the weirdest matches I've ever played on FM.CSKA is a team you shouldn't underestimate,especially because of their attacking mentality.Same tactics like against PSV,our plan was to attack from the first minute.We needed only about 140 seconds to score,and,of course,the scorer was our captain and best player Slavko Perovic.The referee gave them an absolute laughter penalty,which Langa easily transformed into an equalizer.We picked ourselves up very fast,as Djuricic
scored from free kick.And then,we made our mini-show.First Perovic blasted a header after mastermind action through the left line,and then D'Angelo made one of the goals you couldn't have seen for some time!In a Leo Messi style.(P.S.After that match,Villareal offer me a 6M bid for him,but I rejected the offer as quite offensive.I know I could sold him for 20M in some years to come).When Djuricic scored again at the beginning of the second half,I thought it was all over,We head a four goal lead,49 minutes from the clock.Then again a stupid decision from the referee!Another penalty,even more suspicious than the first one.Few minutes before that,Pereira scored a goal they really deserved,but it was 5:3 on the end.Delighted to get this victory,but devastated with those idiotic referees...

Very interesting story. Not a big follower of Serbian football, but I certainly prefer Red Star, seeing as they're the people's team. It'd of been great for you to win 9IAR but 8's stil pretty awesome.
