I can't win a game because there is a 85+ min goal every f***king game! There is no way to defend against it!

I pull 5 men back, slowest tempo, timewasting, and narrow width.

Tell them to keep ball and play safe but theres a late equaliser every single time!

What can i do if there is no possible way to defend against it?

Do you use subs?? Making substitutions in 2nd half can make a big difference.

Substitute your tiring players during the 65th and 75th minute to battle fatigue. Focus on taking off the tiring central midfielders and fullbacks first before wingers, attacking midfielders and strikers. They are priority.

Then swap your tactics around to base it around possession, time waste a little and put a deep defensive line. Also change your set pieces to to have almost, if not, everyone back. Makes it extremely difficult for the opposition to then score and have a change of scoring.

Lastly, try motivating your substitutes with team talks in 'You have faith' or 'No pressure!' so they can relax and play they're own game. Having pressure on their shoulders will make it difficult to concentrate and end up with poor ratings by full-time. And even if they do, be lenient and just go with the overall team talk or just don't say anything to them.

EDIT-

For your match preparation, you could work on defending set-pieces, so that you're team is more aware of conceding late goals from corners coming towards the end of the game.

I do make subs, but possibly not the correct ones and maybe a little early. I'll take this on board and try it out. Thanks :)

What type of goals do you concede? I found that the opposition took advantage of tired full backs and scored a lot of crosses late on. Try setting your full backs to defend at the end of games?

Usually crosses or corners now that i think about it.

My FB's are at defend anyway.

post some screenshots of matches where u've lost the late goals haha

Are you secretly Alan Pardew?

Well I am managing Newcastle..........and that's all I'm saying for now *shifty eyes*

Ah...off topic-I've got Man United next....any advice? (Not in relation to late goals, just in general)

Do the usual. Play deep, slow tempo and time waste. Make sure you have at least one or two of their main attacking threats marked and nullified because they can run riot.

Depending on if you're at home or not, you can have the tackling on aggressive or default. Allows a much larger advantage in retaining possession for your side and expanding it to the wings, thus, creating chances.

If you're team is aggressive enough, you should look to play aggressively - if not, you're looking at alot of bookings.

Thanks for the info.

Yes I am home, and i think that i should make use of my teams aggression and just hopefully hold out for a draw.

What about formation. Will I play 5 men back or not?

No. Unless you have trained it through pre-season with your squad, it's ill-advised.

I assume you're playing as Newcastle, so play a normal 4-2-3-1, with normal wingers and normal central midfielders.

Now, I am going to go into a little more detail. When you play the 4-2-3-1, make sure that your central midfielders are on Automatic and Defend. They are crucial in retraining possession. The wingers and the attacking midfielder link up with the striker to make the attacking moves work.

If you want you can have one of your fullbacks on Support and the other on Automatic, so he can overlap the winger ahead of him on his flank. Play normal central defenders with no specialised roles and have your instructions on:

  • Normal defensive line (a couple of clicks away from Deep)
  • Narrow width (a couple of click in)
  • Slow tempo (Mid-way through Slow)
  • Time Wasting sometimes (Just in the middle)
Sort out your man-marking and select your biggest threat (i.e. Rooney) and have your best central defender (i.e. Coloccini, Williamson) man-mark him. Or one of your central midfielders so that your defence can mark zonally.

EDIT-

This is just an example.

UPDATE

Newcastle 0-1 Man U

Carrick 90th min

This is happening in both my leagues...beginning to wonder if its a bug?

happening almost every game and there's nothing i can do.

it's happening too much to be a coincedence or bad managing

Well, it's dependant on when you puts your subs on and when you focused match preparation on defending set pieces.

Also down to a lack of luck, which is often the case.

Well on 69th min i replaced Campbell with Spence
And on 73rd i replaced Nolan with Barton.

I feel like i have done nothing wrong.

Were they both below 70% in fitness? Were their ratings below 6.7?

And, like I said, sometimes it's down to your decisions, other times it's down to luck - even more so, both. Takes time too.

Happens to me a lot as well. Buckets full of chances, but if I make only 1 (or none) near the end of the game the opposition will score. Nearly cost me the title against Stoke at home (28 shots vs 3 shots, 1-1) and it did cost me the semi's in the CL. 1-1 was enough for me, Arsenal with 10 man, screamer in the 90th, 2-1 and I was out.

Thing that bothers me the most is that there doesnt seem to be a way to counter it

i never take my defenders off, I find I always concede if I do :\ find it disrupts the defence, but my players don't normally tire so could be because you're making too many changes, tactically as well.

it happens a lot against rivals. man united always score in injury timeagainst my liverpool team. and defenders often get sent off at the death against rivals too. ther day i was 2 up agaist everton, in the last 10 mins the AI injured my rb, and sent off a cb and both my lb's (including a sub) and pulled back to 2-2. its a nightmare

because you are playing with 5 defenders playing deep etc, you are allowing them to attack. if you haven't conceded in the 85 minutes, why change it? i believe attack is the best form of defence :p
