Japanese footballer Naoki Matsuda has died two days after he collapsed on the training pitch with a suspected heart attack.

The 34-year-old, who represented Japan at the 2002 World Cup, was rushed to hospital on Tuesday.
He collapsed during a training session with his club, Matsumoto Yamaga, and never regained consciousness.
Former Japan manager Philippe Troussier paid tribute to the defender, saying he was a key member of the World Cup team.

"It's terrible to see someone die at such a young age," Mr Troussier told Reuters news agency.
"It's a big shock. He was a great guy and I felt a close bond to him. My thoughts go to his family."
Fans, friends and former players had gathered at the hospital in Matsumoto to wish the player well.
Matsuda played 40 times for Japan, and won two J-League titles during 15 years with the Yokohama F-Marinos.
He moved to lower league Matsumoto earlier this year.

Terrible shame, I actually remember the name from 2002. RIP.

Never heard of him, but it's always sad when anyone dies so RIP.

The way Japanese people handle themselves is incredible, their capacity to show dignity in times like this is just amazing.

His mother: "It is consoling to think that he could pass away on turf during soccer what he loved most".

Honda: ''Very sad to hear that Naoki has passed away, he blazed the trail I and others have followed, my condolences go to his family.''

His legacy isn't know to European fan's but I have no doubt his stamp in the Japanese domestic game will be long lasting and one of idol status.

Sayonara Naoki.

Very sad, once again a heart attack takes an athlete.

RIP.

Never heard og him but its always tragic when such a thing happens to an athlete. R.I.P.
Thoughts with his family and friends at this time

What is it with the healthiest sporting athletes succumbing to heart attacks between 18-40? Really is staggering.

Definately remember the name.

RIP
