Saturday 22nd January 2011

The day began normally for all news centres and football clubs in England and Europe. Transfers were being discussed, deals clinched, and cancelled. There was nothing out of the ordinary that day. Well, that is if you discount the fact that Derby County was suddenly in the middle of take over talks without any warning whatsoever to the fans.

But all that changed at around midday. In a diary kept by a manager, this is how it was recorded.

12:10 PM: Fabio Capello resigns from England. Shocking news to me. Looks like Redknapp is favourite to take over.

PRESS CONFERENCE

PressConference.JPG

The Press conference was eagerly anticipated by reporters and fans alike. After Dave Jones' departure to manage Stoke City in the Premier League, Cardiff were forced to choose a new manager and at such a crucial time in their campaign to get back into the Premiership. Currently, after their 3-1 win over Derby County, Cardiff were in fifth place and though they were not favourites for promotion compared to high flying Middlesbrough or Nottingham Forest, the Welsh side could still be counted as one of the contenders in a Championship Promotion race which is one of the widest in years, with Hull City, Burnley, Cardiff, QPR, Doncaster, Portsmouth and Sheffield United all in contention apart from Cardiff, Forest and Boro.

Seven Thirty PM

The press conference is finally underway. Following a brief speech from the chairman, the wait began as the Cardiff bosses ruled out one option after another. Swansea's Brendan Rodgers was ruled out, so was Preston's Darren Ferguson, son of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson. With four options now out of the way (two more were ruled out after Ferguson and Rodgers), the media was out of ideas. It was then that the chairman said "Ladies and gentlemen, please turn to your right and welcome Robbie Savage, the new manager of Cardiff City..."

Seeing the former Welsh defender, who had only recently announced his retirement from Derby County, one question arose in the minds of all present at the press conference.

Can he take them to the Premier League?
