I wouldn't give strikers in a central role the run wide with ball instruction, because they'll be running along the touchline when you want them to be in that central role to score goals. Unless they have good dribbling, it's rare they're going to be able to get from the wide position into a goal scoring one. I'd say the only players you'd give that instruction to are full backs and wingers/inside forwards, with the addition of the cut inside instruction for the latter.

That's exactly my thoughts...Still if the game offer them this option, it because maybe there is a hidden use for it in certain roles or certain situations...I hope someone whould clear it out once and for all...so we can go along without thinking maybe there something there that is not seen fron first glance...

With Football Manager 2014 There is a new role ,Wide Target Man which the instruction run wide with the ball is another alternative to play...I have such a player who can also play as inside forward...But by playing him as the target man I can instruct all team to focus the ball to him...This role ia all about being a strong tall player against a small full back...Examining closely his attributes I have found that his weakest attribute is crossing...So it is all fits...He plays with his left foot on the right wing using his aerial dominance and instead of trying to run at his fullback as a usual winger he can cut inside if he plays as an Inside forward, but if that doesn't work (You can't use both instructions at the same time),there is a another natural role for him to run wide...It can even be more effective if you play with a complete wing back (which is another role for FM 2014) behind him using the individual player instructions "Hold the ball" for the wide target man & Team Instruction "Look for the Ovelap" That way you have more options of attacking...I have just read the report of my next opponent...The thing that caught my eye is they are vulnerable in their left back position...you can read about his role and all new roles in Football Manager 2014 here Football Manager 2014 New Player Roles; Enganche, Shadow Striker, Regista + More! | Passion for Football Manager 2014

Introducing first time in Football Manager 2014 The new striker role FALSE NINE is the first one I have found suitable for a striker to use with the instruction "run wide with the ball" IF the striker has the abilty to dribble and is strong with good balance...This role could be work fine together with An Inside Forward who would take advantage of the disrupted opposition defence due to the movement of the False Nine...Read about the new role it reminds me of johan cruyff that was going down towards the midfield and starting the attacks from coming from behind... http://www.mypassion4footballmanager.com/2013/10/football-manager-2014-tactics-new-player-roles.html
