Sheff utd - We'll try again

Hi guys,

I've been a long time reader of this board but have never posted before never mind attempt a story. However, the first week of the season really got me interested.

So I thought "what was the shock result of the weekend?" ... West Ham beating Arsenal? Swansea getting a rare draw at Stamford Bridge? Even Leicester beating Sunderland 4-2?

But when I looked into the lower leagues there was only going to be one winner, at that was at the Preiestfield Stadium where Gillingham beat promotion favorites Sheffield United 4-0!

Whenever I think of Sheffield United I think of their time in the Premier League under Neil Warnock and I couldn't believe it when I heard this was their 5th season in league 1.

Therefore, my attempt at a story will be trying to turnaround the fortunes of 'The Blades'.

As I mentioned at the start, this is my first story so any feedback or tips would be welcome Oh and I will be using the LFCMarshall update.

Sheff Utd manager Nigel Adkins leaves post after just one game.


An extraordinary scene at Bramall Lane saw the former Scunthorpe and Southampton boss leave his job after just one competitive game in charge.

This one game was the first game of the season to Gillingham where The Blades were thumped 4-0.

The board held crucial talks with Adkins for him to explain the defeat, during this meeting both parties agreed it was best to part company.

Although Adkins 70 days in charge is not the shortest managerial reign ever, it is certainly an embarrassing situation for both parties.

The Blades will have to act quickly as they travel to Colchester on Saturday and will look to have a new man in charge.

Here at the BBC, we've taken a look at the shortest reigns of all time ...


Brian Clough – Leeds United (44 days, 1974)
The most famous, or infamous, of brief stays. Clough hated the Leeds players. The Leeds players hated Clough, who had constantly bad mouthed them while in charge of Derby County. The players got their wish and Old Big Head went on to bigger and better things, taking Nottingham Forest to two European cup victories.

Steve Coppell – Manchester City (33 days, 1996)
Coppell had time to squeeze in a short stay at Maine Road between his first two, and last two spells as Crystal Palace manager. To be fair he didn’t need long. Citing stress as the cause of his change of heart, he left the club after just six games.

Paul Hart – QPR (28 days, 2009/10)
Taking over at Loftus Road after his predecessor, Jim Magilton, had a bust up with a player, Hart too had a falling out with another, Adel Taarabat ,and trigger happy owner Flavio Briatore agreed Hart’s exit by ‘mutual consent’.

Dave Bassett – Crystal Palace (4 days, 1984)
Bassett never actually signed a contract at Selhurst Park but still managed to put in four days work before deciding it wasn’t to his liking and returning to Wimbledon quick smart.

Leroy Rosenior – Torquay (10 minutes, 2007)
The current holder of the record for shortest spell as manger, Rosenior had the misfortune of being appointed Torquay manager as the club were being taken over by a local consortium. Papers signed, they wanted their own man in and Rosenior was gone in 600 seconds.​

The Sheffield United board have promised to make a swift decision on a new manager and look to have a replacement in charge for Saturday's game against Colchester.

The board have gone on record saying "The departure of Nigel has come as a shock to everybody and it isn't the decision we had hoped for. However we have to make the most of this situation and the search for a new manager is well underway.

We won't be making any comment on who is likely to be the new man in charge but our aim is to appoint Nigel's successor in time for the Colchester game on Saturday".

Although the board are unwilling to name names, the bookies currently have Chris Morgan (United's current first team coach) as 5/4 favourite with former Blackpool boss Paul Ince 3/1 and Bradford boss Phil Parkinson 5/2.

However SkyBet have today slashed the price for Sam Allardyce who started the day at 35/1 but can now be taken at just 7/2.​
