You're bypassing that even in an abysmal season for Manchester United as a club, Rooney has scored 17 goals, and got 10 assists in 29 appearances, with the vast majority of that coming as a number 10. While at the time Rooney could have been considered overpriced, over the last 10 years the amount of money that his goals have brought to the club has been astonishing, and he has more than payed that back.
And when you were saying about Neymar, RVP and Messi carrying their nations (before the 'wow') you seemingly 'forgot' Ronaldo, honest mistake? Balon D'or winner, yet has only scored 2 world cup goals. It's not only Rooney mate.
And who exactly were the few English players that shone? The only one that i'd consider to have impressed is Raheem Sterling. Rooney also has way more pressure on him than any other English player, because he knows that if England don't win he'll get blamed. The argument about Ferguson is also invalid in my opinion. Yes, he was an incredible manager and we may never see another manager like him at United, but Rooney's stats don't lie, Rooney has also performed under Moyes, as i have previously stated, in a team that was no where near as special as other teams that he's been in.
If Rooney wasn't special he wouldn't be so highly considered by managers such as Fergie and Mourinho, the latter allegedly wanting to pay £40 million for him at Chelsea.
