Signing players after talks have broken down.

Hello all, Basically I am managing West Ham United on the 1st January 2013 and I want to sign Taye Taiwo on a free transfer at the end of the season to replace Royston Drenthe, however I previously had a chance to sign Taiwo but I was too cheap with an impatient manager and so I was turned down, I am now willing to pay large wages for this player but I am not sure how I can get him to enter talks again because currently the contract page is currently tinted red and unavailable. Please help me ASAP, thanks!

I've tried to do what you said but he just shows no interest in my comments and I fear I will never be able to sign him.

Is there anything else I can do to convince him to enter talks with me again or is it a lost cause?
